Grade 6

I. Objectives
 Identify the different classes of vertebrates.
 Classify animals according to its classes of vertebrates.
 Appreciate the importance of knowing the different classes of
vertebrates in class activity.

Review:
What was our lesson yesterday?
Motivation:
The teacher will show a picture of a zoo.
Question: What are the animals that you’ve seen in the picture? What would be
their common traits that we can see to them?
Lesson Proper
Presentation:
The teacher will show a video clip about the topic.
Activity 1: LIST ME!

The student will be grouped into three. While watching the video, the
teacher will let the students identify those different classes of vertebrates.
They are going to list down all the different classes of vertebrates on the
paper provided for them. The teacher will let them post their answer on the
board.
Activity 2: CLASSIFY ME!

In the same group, the animals that they’ve listed base to the video
must be classified accordingly based to their classes of vertebrates.
Analysis

 What is vertebrates?
 What are the different groups of vertebrates?
 How do we classify vertebrates?

Abstraction
Vertebrates

- Are animals that have a spinal colomn and a skeleton formed from bones.
The skeleton holds up and protect the body.
Vertebrates classified into five group;

Mammals - are warm-blooded animals that nurse their young with milk and have fur
or hair. Some example of mammals includes dolphins, giraffes and horses.

Reptiles - are cold-blooded animals which lay eggs. Their skin is covered with hard
and dry scale. Reptile species include alligator, crocodiles, snake, lizard, and
tortoise.

Amphibians - are cold-blooded animals they start out their lives living in the water
with gills just like fish. Later they develop lungs and can move to dry land.
Amphibians include frogs, toads, nest and salamanders.

Birds- are animals that have feathers, wings, and lay eggs. Many, but not all, birds
can fly. Birds include the bald eagle, the cardinal, the flamingo, ostriches and the
red-tailed hawk.
Fish - are animals that live in the water. They have grills that allow them to breathe
under water. Different species of fish may live in fresh water or salt water. Fish
includes the brook trout, the great white shark, lionfish and the swordfish.

Application

The student will form a circle. The teacher will spin the bottle, if who would be
the student that pointed by the bottle, he/she will be going to answer.
Question:
 As a student, how will you take good care of your backbone? And why
should you take good care of it?

IV. Evaluation
Directions: Identify the following animals whether it is a reptile, bird, fish,
mammal and amphibians.

1. Dolphin
2. Eagle
3. Tortoise
4. Bear
5. frog
Agreement

Find a picture of any invertebrate animals from newspaper or internet and write
its characteristics and paste it on your notebook.
