Introduction

The purpose of this Method Statement is to define the step by step method to
implement the correct practice for pre-commissioning, commissioning and
testing of the Fire Alarm System Installations in Residential Buildings through the
guidelines contain herein so as to ensure the job execution complies the project
requirement and serves the intended function to satisfactory level. Here method
is only defined for Fire Alarm Installations as required as per contract drawings.

1. Method Statement for Testing & Commissioning of Fire Alarm System
1.1 Objective
The purpose of this procedure is to define the step by step method to implement the correct
practice for pre-commissioning and commissioning of the Fire Alarm System through the
guidelines contain herein so as to ensure the job execution complies the project
requirement and serves the intended function to satisfactory level.

1.2 Tools/Equipment Required


 Insulation Tester
 Continuity Tester
 Step Ladder
 Portable hand tools

1.3 Pre-Commissioning Procedure for Fire Alarm System


Ensure that the Fire Alarm field devices installation is complete and completion is approved.
Ensure a written acceptance test procedure (ATP) for testing fire alarm components and
installation is in accordance with NFPA 72 and specifications approved by Royal Commission
authorities.
Ensure that no damage has occurred between mechanical completions and pre-
commissioning. Repair and replace if any damage.

1.4 Cable Testing


Upon Completion of installation and inspection of cables, they will be tested as follows.
 After completion of cable installation, continuity test will be performed.
 Ensure that the smoke detectors, heat detectors, speakers, bells and horn strobes
are identified location wise and service wise.
 Ensure the wiring termination in fire alarm control panels are complete are and
correct polarity is maintained for all field devices.
 Ensure that the fire alarm cables are pre-tested for continuity before termination.
 Ensure that the earthing of the fire alarm panels is completed.
 Ensure the power supply of fire alarm and voice evacuation panels.
 Check the presence of batteries in all fire alarm panels.
 Check for the presence and proper mounting height of the manual pull stations.
 Check that all field devices are properly supported and secured.
 Check for proper identification of fire alarm cables.

1.5 Commissioning Procedure for Fire Alarm System.


 Ensure that all the pre-commissioning check are properly carried out.
 Switch ON the power supply to fire alarm panel.
 Presence of each device shall be proven by electrical of the devices and its location
shall be checked to correlate with approve design drawing.
 Cause and effect programming shall be under taken in line with the specification
requirements.

 Simulate one of the smoke detector with artificial smoke/magnet and observe the
following.
i. Ringing of bells
ii. Sounding of speakers
iii. Flashing of strobes
iv. Closure of fire dampers and its status indication
v. Indication of fire zone in the panel
vi. Communication of fire status in control room.
vii. Shutdown of AHU’s
viii. Elevators recall signals to existing towers as per cause and effect.
 Reset the fire alarm panel.
 Each indicating device shall be tested in accordance with the manufacturer
recommendations and witnessed to indicate a fire on the control panel.
 Similarly use the manual call point to check the operational features of the system.
 In areas where fire alarms are given sound levels will be verified in accordance with
the required specifications.

1.6 Test for Fireman’s Telephone System


 Turn ON fire alarm and voice evacuation panel.
 Trigger any break glass for fire simulation.
 Check for voice message through speakers insert for fireman’s telephone in any
floor jack and announce a message.
 Checks the recorded messages through the speakers are interrupted and
announcement is heard.

1.7 Final Test & Checkout Plan Check List
