Functions and Constants
Measures of Soybean Yield
Sample Area The size of the sample plot (in inches) used to estimate soybean yield is calculated as:

area = rows * length * width

where rows = number of soybean rows in the sample area
length= length of each row in inches
width = width of each row in inches

Total Seeds The total number of soybean seeds in a sample plot is equal to:
total seeds = pods * seeds
where pods = total number of soybean pods in the sample plot
seeds = average number of seeds per pod
Soybean Weight To calculate the weight of soybeans, use the formula:
weight = total seeds / 3000
where total seeds = total number of soybean seeds in the sample
Bushels To convert the weight of soybean seeds to bushels, use the formula:
bushels = soybean weight / 60

Measures of Soybean Growth

GDD The Growing Degree Day or GDD measures the growth of a crop in response to changing
temperature. GDD is calculated using the formula:

GDD = (Tmin + Tmax) / 2 - Base

where Tmin = minimum daily temperature (°F)
Tmax = maximum daily temperature (°F)
base = baseline temperature (°F) for the crop

Note that Tmin and Tmax cannot be lower or higher than a set value. For soybeans Tmin
cannot be lower than 50 and Tmax cannot be higher than 78.
