To enhance mathematical thinking, understanding and awareness among college students, the
Gujarat Ganit Mandal invites First year & Second year students from all the colleges across Gujarat State
to appear in the Prof. A. R. Rao Mathematics Competition- 2019 (FY/SY) to be held on Sunday 1st
September, 2019 from 12:00 to 3:00 pm.
The aim of the competition is to motivate students for competitive tests like JRF-NET, NBHM, GATE
and participation in MTTS programme.

1. Test duration will be of 3 hours. Question Paper will be in Gujarati and English language.
2. The first, second and the third prizes are of Rs. 600, 500 and 400 respectively.
3. The decision about the prizes will be final and ultimate. All students declared pass in the test will
get a certificate.
4. Rs. 20 is the fees per student for the test. The center can spend at most Rs. 10 per student for local
arrangements and expenses. If the centre does not require any amount or require lesser amount,
whatever is left must be sent to Prof. V. R. Trivedi, A/18, Indraprasth Appartments, Near
Chief Justice Bunglow and Ratnam Towers, Bodakdev, Ahmedabad: 380054.

5. The problems (short or long) for the test will cover topics from higher secondary to early part of
S.Y.B.Sc. and also of common interest and applicable mathematics. Broadly speaking, problems
will cover the topics: Function, Logic, Vector Space and Linear Transformation, Matrices,
Determinant, Permutation and Combination, Principle of Mathematical Induction, Pigeon-hole
Principle, Recurrence relation, GCD & LCM, AM GM and HM and related inequalities, Prime
Numbers and their elementary Properties, Complex Numbers, Elementary Group Theory,
Trigonometry, Calculus, Co-ordinate Geometry of 2 and 3 dimensions, Polynomial equations and
Differential Equations, Elementary Combinatorics, Vector Algebra etc…

6. Coordinators of the respective centers are requested to inform each participant to register
their names ONLINE into a google form for the Prof. A. R. Rao Mathematics Competition-
2019(FY/SY) latest by 16th August, 2019 whose link is given below:

7. Coordinators of the respective centers are requested to kindly send the final list of students
appearing for the test at their center latest by 20th August, 2019.

8. Kindly send the information about the test to as many colleges as possible with the inspired letter
so that maximum students appear for the test at your center.

9. Centre coordinator must make sure that every student writes in his/her answer-sheet Full
Name in CAPITAL letters, Class & Stream, College Name and Contact number.

Prof. A. R. Rao Foundation requests the Principals of colleges and Head of Dept. of Mathematics of
Universities to encourage their students to participate in above competition.
Prof. A. R. Rao Foundation invites college / university students (from any faculty/any stream) of Gujarat
for Prof. A. R. Rao Mathematics Project Competition-2019 on any one of the following topics.

OBJECTIVE: To encourage students to think constructively, explore diligently and express clearly by
working on a project related to mathematics.
ELIGIBILITY: All undergraduate and graduate students studying in Science / Engineering /
Management or any other faculty in Gujarat are eligible to participate in the competition.
REQUIREMENT: A participating student should take up a project on any one of the following topics,
under the guidance of their teacher or independently.

1. The Heart and Hand of Mathematics

2. Creativity through Delight-full Mathematics
3. The First Woman Abel’s prize winner
4. Mathematics in Agriculture, Bio-technology, Environmental Pollution and Mathematics of Diseases
5. What would I do, if I were a Mathematics Teacher? How would I initiate students to Mathematics?
6. How is the proof of a Mathematical Theorem discovered?
7. The great talented Mathematicians who died young
8. Mathematics behind Chandrayaan – II

A student must write about his/her topic of the project in typed form, in Gujarati/English (both hard and
soft copy).
Caution and Suggestion: For the write-up of the Project, the use of internet is very helpful; the
straightaway copy from the internet is highly undesirable. The use of magazines, journals and books in
the library (and elsewhere) and citations there from will be appreciated. The due references must be
given. The write up should reflect the student’s ability to think independently, to organize properly and
to express coherently.
Prizes: Prizes of Rs. 600/-, Rs. 500/- and Rs. 400/- will be given to the first, second and third winner
respectively. There may be some consolation prizes.

The Study Project of the Contestants, in typed form in Gujarati/English with all references along with
Full Name, Full Address, Mobile Number, Email Id, Name of the Class/Faculty, Name of College /
University, Guide Name and Signature of HOD or Principal should be sent to Prof. V. R. Trivedi ,
