Sections one: Annotated screenshots/Elaboration

Information: I was personally was confused about the concept of what a pendulum is, how it relates it physics and
how a pendulum operates with Newton’s three laws of motion. I researched different configurations of pendulums
throughout the internet than, I discovered the perfect pendulum which is called the wave pendulum. But thinking
for a substantial amount of time about if it would be easy to create from sketch. I figured out by using my research
skills that it’s no difficult to construct a wave pendulum and I did extensive amount of research about if a wave
pendulum links to the three laws of motion.

Information:
I started investigating and researching in depth about Newton’s laws of motion. I was convinced and inspirited
about how the laws of motion work whilst, using it for a wave pendulum. I was interested in the content that was

provided in wed site which implemented physical side of this law, the foundation of classical mechanics and the
relationships for force. The three laws of motion relate to the physical project which is the wave pendulum.

Information:
Whilst researching a variety of sources relating to what materials to purchase, for a reasonable price and good
quality materials. The web site that I found personally conductive and reliable whilst researching was Bunnings
warehouse which was a highly recommended hardware store from out Austrians. For each material needed in
order to construct the wave pendulum, I inserted for each item, lowest to highest pricing for a brief overview
budget wise. I created a list with prices of each item so, I could purchase the item’s needed.

Section Three: Explanations

Newton’s First Law: Inertia
Newton’s first law explains and identifies the velocity of any 3D objects which, in response to forces
applied. Newton’s first law states if an objects movement is constructed at a definitive speed and
positioned in a straight line, it will initially continue moving at that specific speed and in a straight line,
continuously, unless no other considerate force is acted on the object. Conceptualising a scenario of
throwing a tennis ball at a certain straight position; the tennis ball could travel everywhere and, in any
direction repeatedly if air resistance and gravity (9.8) didn’t act on the object, which is the tennis ball.
Newton’s first law demonstrates that in which, a pendulum movement is side to side and not going in a
vertical position such as, up and down forces is acted on it.

Newton’s Second Law: Force = mass x acceleration

Newton’s second law of motion specifies that whenever a force acts on an object, it will certainly cause
the object to accelerate. Newton’s second law is identified as the larger the mass of the object, the greater
the force will require for it to cause it to accelerate. Newton’s third law could be written in this manner
such as, force = mass x acceleration or generally known as, F = m * a.

Additional method to explain Newton’s second law is to mention it takes higher amount of force for the
movement of a heavy object than it does to move a less dense object. Newton’s second law also explains
deceleration or slowing down. You could also, think of deceleration as acceleration with a negative sign.
For example, the pendulum. The pendulum is moving at the same direction but, the section with more
string and the section with less string requires the same amount of force and acceleration timing.

Newton’s Third Law: Equal & Opposite reaction

Newton’s third law specifies that every single action contains a reaction of equal force. Newton’s third
law is connected and cooperates with the first law of motion displaying that although the mass and
gravity get eliminated from the vertical component of string tension vector, zero cancelations from the
horizontal component. Newton’s third law displays that the forces acting on a pendulum could distinguish
each other. Modern physicists apply Newton’s first and third laws to demonstrate the horizontal string
tension shifts the pendulum without regard to mass or gravity.

Explanation of Pendulum –

A pendulum wave is carefully measured so, each pendulum is on a moving position, so each
pendulum is moved from backward from the first, swings exactly one more time than the pendulum
in front, over a period of 24 seconds. This forms a curve that is determined by an algebraic
equation and when the pendulum is set swinging different patterns begin to emerge, for example,
double helixes, triple helixes and spirals. It’s a visual representation of mathematics interacting
with the real world.

L = length
G = Gravity which, stands for 9.8 metres per seconds square
Π = 3.14
K = K is a variable. We don’t know what k stands for so, in order to solve K, we have to solve for
this number based on the length of the very first pendulum in the series.
N= Stands for the number of the pendulum that were on in the array
T Max = Stand for the amount of time in seconds that we would like the pendulum to take before
we start to see repeating patterns. In my case it’s 24 seconds.

ATL skills comment:

What ATL skills did you use to complete this task?
How can you improve in future?
What were your strengths / weaknesses with regards to the requirements for each of the ATL?
Explain below.

The ATL skills that I conducted throughout completing my assignment was thinking skills, self-management
skills & research skills. I’ve commenced applying these ATL skills because it shows how I could research in
dependably and follow the MYP requirements. The method that I could have conducted to improve myself
whilst researching and completing my assignment is by, organising a brainstorm which, shows the main ideas
and organises my time wisely. My strengths with the ATL skills that I’ve conducted was thinking skills and
research skills is because I thought of different methods of discovering reliable sources. My weakness with
regards to the requirements for each of the ATL skills was my self-management in some sections of my
assignment, which reducted my expectations when completing my assignment.
