Surveying Instruments used:
• Theodolite • Tripod Stand • Compass
• Measuring Tape • Levelling Staf

Building used in
observation:
One of the four obelisks
located at the site of
Mosque at NEDUET is
selected to be measured in
this practical, also
known/stated as Minaret
in this report.
Procedure:
On the levelled road beside the Mosque, two stations were chosen in a
straight line to the Minaret, and the distance between the two stations
was measured at approximately 36 feet.

The bearings of the stations were determined using a compass, and

measured to be approximately N60°W.

The theodolite was then mounted on a tripod stand and fixed, and its
height from the datum surface (Height of Instrument) was measured
using the levelling staf. The heights at both stations were made to be
same i.e. 5 feet 2 inches.

Finally, the angles of elevation were measured using the theodolite, at

both stations.
Angle at 1st Station: 23 ° 51 ‘ 30 “
Angle at 2nd Station: 31 ° 10 ‘ 50 “

Solution:
From the measurements collected from the experiment, two equations
can be constructed;

1. Tan( 23°51’30” ) = Height of Minaret – Height of Instrument

Distance b/w 1st Station and Minaret

2. Tan( 31°10’50” ) = Height of Minaret – Height of Instrument

Distance b/w 2nd Station and Minaret

Distance b/w 2nd Station and the Minaret was not measured due to obstructions in the path.
Known values:
Height of Instrument = 5.166667 f
Distance b/w two stations = 36 f
Distance b/w Minaret and 1st Station = (Distance b/w
Minaret and 2nd Station) + (Distance b/w two Stations)
Conversions:
Tan( 23°51’30’’ ) = Tan( 23.8583 ) = 0.442269
Tan( 31°10’50’’ ) = Tan( 31.1806 ) = 0.605158
Denoted values:
Let (Height of Minaret – Height of Instrument) be
denoted by X
Let (Distance b/w Minaret and 2nd Station) be denoted by
Y

Then, Distance b/w Minaret and 1st Station = Y + 36

The equations can be rewritten as

1. 0.442269 = X
36 + Y
2. 0.605158 = X
Y
Now, we solve for X and Y

Rearranging equation 2 gives:

X = 0.605158Y
Substituting this into equation 1 gives:
0.442269 = 0.605158Y
36 + Y

36 + Y = 0.605158Y
0.442269

36 + Y = 1.368302Y
36 = 0.368302Y
Y = 97.7459 f
Substituting Y into the rearranged equation 2 gives:

X = (0.605158)(97.7459)
X = 59.151722 f

X = Height of Minaret – Height of Instrument

Height of Minaret = X + Height of Instrument
Height of Minaret = 59.151722 + 5.166667
Height of Minaret = 64.318588 f
Height of Minaret = 64 f 3.22in

Conclusion
The Height of Minaret is calculated to be approximately
64 ft 3.22 inches
