Lubricating Clock Movements
When lubricating clock movements, there
are a number of facts, collected in these in-
structions, to keep in mind. Movement
manufacturers lubricate their movements so
that – under normal conditions – they will
not require service for 6 to 7 years.
Oil mixed in with dust
prevents the proper trans-
mission of power.
If a clock is subjected to extreme heat, the
oil can – depending on its quality – evapo-
rate quickly, lose its viscosity or gum up.
This causes friction losses in the bearings
and poor performance of the wheel train,
which eventually will come to a halt. Dust
mixed into the lubricating oil has an ex-
tremely negative effect. A black residue
builds up in the bearings drastically increas-
ing wear. Damaged bearing surfaces and
rough pivots are the inevitable results. A
proper power transfer is no longer guaran-
teed.
Less is more!
While clean and intact bearings can be
lubricated without preparatory work, prob-
lems can arise, e.g., when the oils used are
not compatible. Today, synthetic oils, such
as »Clock 859«, are used rather than con-
ventional clock oils since they are more uni-
versal and resistant to aging.
When re-oiling or lubricating a movement
after cleaning, it is always better to use less
rather than more oil. After taking the move-
ment from its case and removing its dial, lu-
bricate the pivots held in the front and rear
movement plates only.
Lubricate bearings only.
Only lubricate areas where friction occurs,
such as pivot bearings. The oil must be ap-
plied carefully with an oil dipper. Generally,
the bearing holes in movement plates are
countersunk on the outside to hold small
amounts of oil. Too much lubricant causes

more problems than too little. As soon as an
oil drop runs from the bearing, it will draw
more oil with it. An over-oiled bearing thus
can run dry much faster!
If a bearing is left unlubricated, increased
wear will occur – or the movement will not
function at all.
