A few months ago, I was introduced to a unique
and very intelligent gentleman, Marcus Kahn,
who heads up a company called Modern Spartan
Systems. Along with his business partner, Justin
McConnell, Marcus founded Modern Spartan
Systems in 2013 to revolutionize the way shooters
clean their firearms forever. Sounds like a tall
order, but after testing their products extensively
now, I have to believe they are on to something.
Don’t let the newly formed company date fool
you, between Marcus’s keen business talents and
connections combined with Justin’s extensive
military and firearms background, their shared
passion for firearms kept them driving on
through years of field testing and consulting with
chemical experts to get the right formula to bring
to market prior to 2013.
If you’re like me, you are wondering how these
new products are so different than traditional
cleaners and lubes. My exploration into this
answer began this past October after sitting
down for a one on one meeting with Justin
McConnell in Atlanta, Georgia. Over a course
of two hours, I learned Justin and Marcus had
teamed up with a brilliant engineer / inventor
named Joseph LaStella and a highly decorated
former Air Force captain, named James V. Janes
III, who also happens to be a bit of a wiz when
it comes to the field of experimental chemicals.
Not to give away trade secrets, I can say the
key to their flagship product, Modern Spartan

Systems Accuracy Oil is its thin solution and
ability to seep deep into the pores of the metal
and remain there under extreme cold and heat
to allow a noticeable difference in the action and
performance of your firearm.
Secondly, this oil has the ability to break
a cardinal rule of firearms cleaning, NEVER
put oil down your barrel. With the company’s
Accuracy Oil, they actually recommend using
the oil as a bore treatment! This I had to see
for myself as soon as I could get back home to
Florida. I departed with a few sample bottles of
the Accuracy Oil and a second product Modern
Spartan Systems produces: Carbon Destroyer.
A week later, I was back in my shop working
on a few personal firearms and decided to try
out the new products from Modern Spartan
Systems. I decided to clean my AR-15 barrel and
bolt with the Carbon Destroyer. After soaking the
bolt, I begin what is always an arduous task of
scrapping and scrubbing carbon. To my surprise,
the carbon build up begin to scrub away relatively
fast and easy with just using an old tooth brush.
By the time I was done scrubbing, the bolt looked
better and cleaner than it had in years. After
a few scrubs down the barrel with my cleaning
rod and patch soaked in Carbon Destroyer, I was
pulling clean patches out of the bore in half the
time it would normally take. To be honest, I was
quite impressed already at that point. I went
ahead and then used the Accuracy Oil through

the bore letting it cover all sides before wiping to
back dry and moving on to another rifle.
One of the dirtiest and most fun rifles to shoot
that I own is a Ruger 10/22 take down model.
As with any .22 rifle, the lead and powder build
up is multiple times worse than any centerfire
cartridge and probably gets shot 10 times to
every one of my other firearms. Again, after
minutes of running an old toothbrush through
the action and the bolt, the carbon and gunk
build up that have traditionally been difficult to
scrape and scrub were removed in have the time
with nearly the effort as before. I took the time
to try the Accuracy Oil in the Ruger 10/22 as well,
knowing it would not be long before I knew I
would be shooting it again.
Approximately a week after cleaning my
firearms with Modern Spartan Systems products,
I drove to the range to run a few rifle drills for an
upcoming training article I had been working on
and needed some “action” photos. After running
just over 200 rounds with my AR-15, I switched
to a bit of recreational shooting with the Ruger
10/22. While working the action of both the AR-15
charging handle and the Ruger, I noticed it felt
smoother. I could only loosely describe the action
as now seeming a bit “silky” feeling. Usually as
these two rifles’ round count reaches around 100
or more, the action feels a bit gritty, this was not
the case now.
As I started to check targets, I noticed my
shots with the AR-15 seem to be tighter patterns
on the 75 and 100 yard targets that normal
by approximately ¼ inch and slightly high for
the given dope on the red dot. This is a large
improvement for a constant change. My shots
with the .22 caliber Ruger 10/22 did not reflect
any noticeable change, but as I finished the day
shooting the rifle, I pushed targets out to 100
yards and began to see not only tighter patterns
but less bullet drop over the given distance.
Once my range day was over, I returned home
to my shop and set to the task of again cleaning
both rifles. Surprisingly, clean up using the
Modern Spartan Systems products took less time
than before. The carbon build up seems to be less
than normal and started coming off the bolt with
only a few brush strokes. The action of the Ruger
10/22 simply wiped clean with need of the brush
only in the tighter, hard to reach areas. I was

thrilled with how fast I was done and out of the
shop with clean rifles!
Something I haven’t mentioned yet in this
review is the smell. Normally, cleaning products
are so strong with the harsh smell of chemicals;
it causes me to start to get a headache within
15 to 20 minutes of opening the bottle. This
was not the case with using any of the Modern
Spartan Systems products. The water based
products have a rather pleasant smell actually
and easily wash out of clothing if spilled. Being
so taken by the products success, I contacted
Marcus Kahn personally to discuss my findings.
In typical Marcus fashion, his response was a
hearty laugh and appreciation to hear the good
news. I mentioned to Marcus, I would be teaching
a firearms cleaning class within a couple of weeks
to members of The Well Armed Woman national
shooting organization. My wife, Candace heads
up the North Florida chapter of ladies seeking to
learn firearms safety, expand their shooting skills
and empower other women through the not for
profit organization. Marcus agreed this would
be an excellent chance to obtain opinions from a
wide range of skills levels and different walks of
life for his products. Within a few days, a package
arrived with enough individual 2 ounce bottles of
Accuracy Oil and Carbon Destroyer to supply each
lady in the class with a pair of samples.
After a four hour class of discussing different
types of firearms and their actions, how they

work, disassembly / reassembly and proper
cleaning techniques, the ladies of The Well Armed
Woman felt confident in properly caring for their
firearms and were new fans of Modern Spartan
Systems. I asked the ladies as they departed
to email me their comments and opinions on
the products or any noticeable changes to their
firearms during their next range trip. Within the
next three weeks, I began getting emails about
how the slide to their semi auto pistols seemed to
be smoother and easier to cycle when charging
the weapon or locking the slide back by hand.
A couple of emails commented they shot better
groupings with their firearms and felt the actions
ran faster. During the class, several students
commented on how pleasant the smell of the
cleaning agents was and the sentiment continued
to come across in their emails. Overall, the class
and the products were a huge success and has
since then lead to a strong relationship between
the company and the not for profit organization.
Admittedly, in order to honestly give Modern
Spartan Systems products a try, I had to set
aside everything I thought I knew about firearms
cleaning and break from traditional habits. Since
first using their products, I have noticed clean up
time shrank to about 25% of the original time it
would take to clean my firearms normally after
being on the range. I enjoy the fact the cleaning
agents do not leave an oily residue on the firearm
or your hands when finished.

Due to the dry, non-grease feeling of the oil, I
have noticed over the past two months, my every
day carry pistol is cleaner. One of the biggest
issues I have with my concealed carry pistol is, by
carrying it in my pocket, even inside of a holster,
it used to attract a lot of lint inside the action
and barrel. Since treating the small Glock model
42 .380, the action seems smoother and the lint
does not seem to want to stick to the gun.
I have also explored further into the results of
tighter groups with the understanding using the
oil as a treatment and wiping it clear of the barrel
each time allows for the pores of the metal inside
to fill with lube and allow for a purer interface

Triple Aught Design was founded in 1997 by Patrick
Ma. His goal was to inspire people to explore
their world by offering the best performing

Based in the creative Dogpatch area of San
Francisco, TAD offer a great range of gear; most of
us in the UK know them best for their clothing, but

WHAT MAKES TAD STAND OUT?
You really need to look in depth at TAD kit to
answer this question so I’m going to use as
examples a few bits of kit that are in regular use
with the Raider Team. First up is their top of the
line Stealth Hoodie LT.

three-layer softshell constructed from Swiss-made
Schoeller® textiles and treatments that include:

LTH HOODIE LT - THE STEALTH HOODIE LT - RAINY DAYS
TAD have designed the Stealth Hoodie LT to
layer with their excellent Ranger Hoodie LT,
Praetorian or Special Service Sweater with ease,
or wear comfortably as a stand alone piece with
just one of their Traverse 150 Tech Ts underneath.
To achieve the right fit and weather protection,
you can just adjust the dyed-to-match velcro
cuffs, cinch the cord at the hem, unzip the pit
zips or use the easily stowed Aero hood. The
pocket array gives you multiple storage options,
including D-rings in the chest and upper arm
pockets to dummycord your gear, keeping it both
handy and secure.
In its latest incarnation, the Stealth Hoodie LT
uses fully seam taped construction and Italian
made RiRi water resistant zippers chosen for their
durability and ease of use. With a refined, tailored
fit that eliminates excess bulk yet still allows for
easy layering, this jacket is designed to conquer
all. It’s available in ME Green, UE Grey and Black in
two variations, either with or without velcro patch
attachment points on the upper arm pockets.
In use this is a truly outstanding jacket. The
features are generous with two main pockets
on the front, two upper arm pockets, one lower
arm pocket on the left sleeve, and a “poacher”
pocket on the back. Both the front chest and the
upper arm pockets have media/comms ports and
D rings to attach gear. The hood is of a good size,
big enough to get a lightweight helmet under,
with a soft peak.

Performance is utterly staggering in all
conditions! It shrugs off rain and sleet with
consummate ease, and is so breathable that you
hardly know you are wearing an outer layer!
The addition of pit zips for mechanical venting
seems almost superfluous, but going at full tilt
they certainly come in useful for that little extra
ventilation, Although TAD describe this as a
softshell you’d be hard pushed to see where a
hardshell would outperform it in any way at all.
Another firm favourite with us is the Force 10
Cargo Pant. Rugged, breathable and engineered
with ample storage, TADs signature Force 10
Cargo Pant will give performance above and
beyond under strenuous demands. Blending
the durability and tear-resistance of nylon with
the breathability of cotton, the Nylon Cotton
(NYCO) Ripstop fabric strikes the perfect balance
between comfort and durability.
They offer unrestricted movement thanks
to smart design and a gusseted crotch. Triple
needle stitching on the in- and out seam, and
reinforced pockets and seat enhance durability
massively. The trousers have ten pockets
providing ample storage, including two hidden
passport pockets on the inside rear to hold your
personal documents discretely. Internal cargo
pocket dividers allow you to organise crucial gear
for quick access.
The Force 10s are a very versatile design; the
cargo pockets lay flat creating a streamlined
look and incorporate bellowed design allowing
for expanded storage space. TAD also created a
slide-through slot at the top of the pocket to allow
for quick and easy access to linear shaped items
like a long taclight.
Inserts at the knees accommodate Armour Pads
for increased protection and less strain on your
body. These are now available in Battleship Grey
as well as ME Brown and ME Green.
BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER
Now I can tell you’re all thinking “Well it all
sounds good, but it also sounds expensive…” and
you’d be correct in your assumption, although
it’s not as expensive as some competitor product
with a lesser specification! TAD gear is not cheap,
but you really do get what you’re paying for in
terms of design and performance.

should look in more depth at what TAD bring to
the party, and I’m certain that you’ll like what

The first thing you should look at when buying anything is build
quality. Should a jacket not be up to the tasks you plan to lay before
it, you may end up in a frivolous situation. Always make sure the jacket you’re
purchasing is the real deal, and not a cheap imitation.
LOOKS
4 Lets not even try to hide it - whilst we want any item we buy to
perform it’s intended task, we also want it to look good whilst
doing so. Jackets are certainly no stranger to this rule, and often being a
centrepiece, it’s definitely worth looking for a looker.
PRICE
5 Whilst you can’t skimp on the price of a quality jacket, we’re also

The KITANICA MARK IV jacket, also known as the Kitanica jacket
that started a utility clothing revolution has been redesigned
21 years from it’s original inception. The design is higher
functioning, more stylish and even more abuse proof than its
predecessor.

BUILD QUALITY
There is no doubting that the build quality of the Kitanica
Mark IV is top quality. From the materials made to the design
choices, the Mark IV has been expertly thought out.
Made from a 1000D CORDURA, the Mark IV is certainly
durable. That durability is backed up by a urethane coating
for water resistance, as well as a articulated padding system
to keep you both protected and comfortable.

ADDED FEATURES
The Mark IV has a whole range of added features. It has
probably more pockets than you could shake a stick at, with
various pockets located on the arms, chest and stomach.
It has MOLLE webbing on the forearms should you wish to
attach anything and it has a very unique articulated spine
pad.

LOOKS
We’re not sure on the Mark IV in regards to looks. It’s definitely
interesting, but we’re not sure if that’s a good interesting or a
bad interesting as of yet. The spine pad will likely divide a lot of
opinions as well. We’ll simply say undecided as of now.

PRICE
We need say no more than - “this jacket is expensive”. At 5p short of
£800, the Kitanica Mark IV is by far the most expensive jacket in this
feature. Generally though if you’re thinking about dropping £795.95 on a
jacket though you have a very specific reason behind it, so we really can’t
comment on the price. This is certainly the kind of jacket that is only worth
it for the right person.

FINAL THOUGHTS
There is no doubting that the Kitanica Mark IV is an amazing jacket. It’s
specced up well, it’s durable, and it’s generally just a darned good jacket…
However, is it really something you’re genuinely going to get full use from?
If the answer is yes, you probably know exactly what you’re looking for, if
not, you’re probably best off looking elsewhere.

Like the Ranger Hoodie, we simply don’t have to
worry about the idea of build quality when it comes
to Triple Aught Design products. Time and time again
we’ve been astounded by the sheer excellence of TAD
products, and the Rogue RS is no exemption to that
rule of thumb.
Made from a Nylon Cotton Ripstop material, the
Rogue RS is the right amount of rugged whilst
maintaining it’s lightweight feel, and even comes
complete with a DWR finish.

Being designed to be a lightweight jacket, the Rogue
RS isn’t exactly dripping in added features. It has
two exterior pockets with internal dividers and two

purchase, but of all the items on show within this
article it is probably our favourite. It’s warm, it’s
slightly waterproof and it looks good whilst offering
that protection. What more could you want?
FINAL THOUGHTS
Of all the products on show here, the Ranger Hoodie
is the one we have the most experience with. That
experience has led us to realise the Ranger Hoodie
is a damned good piece of kit and with that comes
a Raider Recommendation! Honestly, the Ranger
Hoodie is awesome, go buy one.

a long time, so take the price as you will.
FINAL THOUGHTS
It’s probably the wrong season for the Rogue RS
at the moment as it’s hardly going to offer much
protections from the cold, but if you need something
to just throw on over the top of a jumper or you’re
planning a trip to nicer climates, the Rogue RS would
definitely be on our list of candidates.

CLAW GEAR CIM JACKET
DESCRIPTION
The ClawGear CIM (Combat Insulation Medium) Jacket has been
specifically designed as a durable outer-shell, ideal for extreme
conditions both wet and cold. It also boasts a reduced infrared signature
(NIR) which means that it is particularly applicable for use by Special
Forces.

BUILD QUALITY
ClawGear have long been on our radar; having originally seeing their
product at the IWA Show nearly 8 years ago. Over that time they have
blossomed into a company who’s products really are second to none.
Designed with Special Forces Operators in mind, the CIM Jacket is
certainly built to the highest standards. Boasting durable nylon woven
fabric with rip stop structure, seal taped seams and a durable water
repellent (DWR) coating, it’s safe to say that you won’t be exposed to the
elements whilst wearing one of these!

ADDED FEATURES
One of the biggest things for us with the CIM Jacket is it’s DWR coating.
DWR being a durable water repellent. Whilst not making this jacket
completely waterproof, it will make it water resistant to a certain level.
On top of that you have the usual range of pockets, pit zippers for active
temperature control and a hood!

LOOKS
ClawGear’s CIM Jacket certainly sticks very close to the idea of function
over form, as opposed to form over function. It is a fairly bland jacket
that has a very military look to it; which comes as no surprise due to it’s
intended audience. It’s essentially a wearable sleeping bag.

PRICE
£240.95 is definitely starting to get to the amount of money people feel
worried about spending, and we definitely understand that. But at the
same time if you need a jacket that is going to fully protect you from the
elements, then you need to spend money. In our opinion £240 is a very
reasonable price for a jacket of this spec.

FINAL THOUGHTS
ClawGear have certainly done it again with their CIM Jacket, but if truth
be told we already knew that. We’ve personally owned a CIM Jacket for
a fairly substantial period of time, and we can wholeheartedly say it’s
an outstanding jacket for extremely cold temperatures. That said, it
is certainly only intended for extreme temperatures, which limits it’s
usability.

UF PRO DELTA ML JACKET
DESCRIPTION
UF Pro’s first Delta ML jacket was designed as a pure mid layer component,
but was immediately used as a super comfortable, “stand alone “winter jacket.
Therefore they based the concept of the UF PRO® Delta ML jacket on the original
mid layer design, but added specifically functional elements that would qualify
it also as an outer layer winter jacket for all outdoor activities in extreme cold
weather conditions.

BUILD QUALITY
UF PRO always deliver in our opinion when it comes to build quality. In the past
we’ve used a range of their products, including some excellent merino wool
base layers, and we’ve always been happy. The Delta ML follows that trend.
Making use of a m2 G-Loft insulation, the Delta ML is more than capable of
keeping you warm in colder climates. It goes one further though, making use of
a 37.5 micro fleece from COCONA, which provides quick drying properties and
good thermal insulation.

ADDED FEATURES
In terms of added features, the Delta ML comes fully stocked. With two chest
pockets, two side pockets and two inner pockets, the Striker sleeve pocket
configuration, wrist warmers, an adjustable lower hem, and a frost zipper
backed with a wind resistant flap. Essentially you have everything you could
possibly ask for from a mid shell.
One thing it is missing is a hood, but again this comes from the fact it is a mid
shell. With this in mind we do think it’d be perfect as part of a layering system.

LOOKS
Unfortunately the Delta ML is hardly anything to write home about in regards to
how it looks. It’s fairly bland. Asides from that there is very little to say - it’s a
plain coloured mid layer.

PRICE
For £133.95 you’re certainly getting a lot of jacket. Not only is the jacket insanely
warm, it comes with just enough features to warrant a purchase. Honestly, for a mid
shell you’re not going to get a jacket of this quality for much cheaper, and with UF PRO
you know you’re buying from a manufacturer who really know what they’re doing.

FINAL THOUGHTS
For us, we’re still certain this jacket would excel most as part of a layering system for
colder environments. That’s not to say that the Delta ML is not an excellent product
in it’s own right, but we’re just never too keen on having a jacket that doesn’t have a
hood. You just never know when the heavens may open up!

In the original description of the Paleo diet
in the afore mentioned Loren Cordain book,
he advocated eating as much like Palaeolithic
people as possible, meaning your diet should be
broken down as such...
■ 55% of daily calories from seafood & lean meat.
■ 15% of daily calories from fruits, vegetables,
and nuts and seeds.
■ 30% assigned by yourself to one of the various
foods highlighted above.
The diet follows seven fundamental
characteristics that enable optimised health,
minimised risk of chronic disease and most
importantly lose weight.
HIGHER PROTEIN INTAKE
Protein comprises 15 % of the calories in the
average western diet, which is considerably
lower than the value of 55% found in the Paleo
diet. Meat, seafood, and other animal products
represent the staple foods of modern Paleo diets.
LOWER CARBOHYDRATE INTAKE AND
LOWER GLYCEMIC INDEX
Non-starchy fresh fruits and vegetables
represent the main carbohydrate source and
will provide for a base value of 15% of your daily
calories, although many will up this to around
35%. Almost all of these foods have low glycemic
indices that are slowly digested and absorbed,
and won’t spike blood sugar levels.
HIGHER FIBRE INTAKE
Dietary fibre is essential for good health, and
despite what we’re told, whole grains aren’t the
place to find it. Non-starchy vegetables contain
eight times more fibre than whole grains and
31 times more than refined grains. Even fruits
contain twice as much fibre as whole grains and
seven times more than refined grains.
MODERATE TO HIGHER FAT INTAKE
DOMINATED BY MONOUNSATURATED AND
POLYUNSATURATED FATS WITH BALANCED
OMEGA-3 AND OMEGA-6 FATS
It is not the total amount of fat in your diet
that raises your blood cholesterol levels and
increases your risk for heart disease, cancer, and
type 2 diabetes, but rather the type of fat. Cut
the trans fats and the Omega-6 polyunsaturated
fats in your diet and increase the healthful
monounsaturated and Omega-3 fats that were
the mainstays of Stone Age diets. Recent large
population studies known as meta analyses show

effects upon cardiovascular disease risk.
EAT FRESH! HIGHER POTASSIUM AND
LOWER SODIUM INTAKE
Unprocessed, fresh foods naturally contain
5 to 10 times more potassium than sodium,
and Stone Age bodies were adapted to this
ratio. Potassium is necessary for the heart,
kidneys, and other organs to work properly.
Low potassium is associated with high blood
pressure, heart disease, and stroke – the same
problems linked to excessive dietary sodium.
Today, the average American consumes about
twice as much sodium as potassium.
NET DIETARY ALKALINE LOAD THAT
BALANCES DIETARY ACID
After digestion, all foods present either a
net acid or alkaline load to the kidneys. Acid
producers are meats, fish, grains, legumes,
cheese, and salt. Alkaline-yielding foods are
fruits and veggies. A lifetime of excessive
dietary acid may promote bone and muscle
loss, high blood pressure, and increased risk for
kidney stones, and may aggravate asthma and
exercise-induced asthma.
HIGHER INTAKE OF, VITAMINS,
MINERALS, ANTIOXIDANTS, AND PLANT
PHYTOCHEMICALS
Whole grains are not a good substitute for grass
produced or free ranging meats, fruits, and
veggies, as they contain no vitamin C, vitamin A,
or vitamin B12. Many of the minerals and some
of the B vitamins whole grains do contain are not
well absorbed by the body.
✔ THE RISKS?
There are very few risks when it comes to
the Paleo diet. Overall the diet is a very
safe one, with no rapid weight loss or
yo-yo’ing, in fact it’s about one of the most
natural diets available in the public eye.
There have however been claims of
nutritional deficiencies at times though,
with reduced levels of vitamin D and
calcium within individuals following
the diet for a long period of time. These
deficiencies can lead to compromised bone
health, however both problems can be
solved with supplements.
✔ A DAY OF PALEO MEALS
If you’re interested in the Paleo diet,
you’re going to want to get some ideas for
meals. One of the great things about the
Paleo diet is it’s all so easy to prepare and
cook, meaning anyone can follow it.
BREAKFAST
Breakfast is best accomodated for with
a quick an easy omelet. Dice up some
vegetables, throw the eggs in a pan and
if you want a little meat in there, dice up
some turkey or chicken breast too!
LUNCH
Lunch is an easy one with the Paleo diet
and you can save yourself a load of hassle
with a little prep. At the beginning of
the week, make yourself up a salad with
everything you like. Store the salad in a
sealable container and then serve it with
some form of meat or fish, a pit of olive oil
and some lemon juice.
DINNER
Dinner is the hardest one to prepare as
many people are used to a huge amount
of carbohydrated with their dinners -
something the Paleo diet doesn’t allow.
One idea is to replace pasta for spaghetti
squah. This way you can serve up a ton of
various pasta dishes whilst still sticking to
the diet guidelines.

We’ve always had good experiences with
Warrior kit and it has never let us down.
Perhaps the only criticism we can make of
previous products is that they were a little
on the heavyweight side. Some buyers prefer
something that is both utterly tough and totally
robust but in the modern day and age, a lot of
buyers are thinking light and fast. WAS have
responded by changing the primary material
used in a to of their kit to 500d Cordura
along with many of their tactical industry
contemporaries.
For the last 6 or so years, I’ve been using
an old Warrior Crusader pack, a product long
since discontinued. It’d been through hell and
back and has been MASSIVELY abused through
overloading and generally lashing stuff on
where stuff shouldn’t be. I broke an interior
zipper by overfilling a pouch and I ripped a
compression strap off the side by hanging too
much weight off of it but other than that it held
up pretty well. Unfortunately it met it’s maker
after being left in the back of a friends van that
basically caught fire. The van didn’t survive and
neither did the pack… No amount of Cordura
can be expected to withstand that!
Based on my overall positive experience, I
went straight to the UK Tactical website to see
what packs were now available from WAS. On
sale at the time, the X300 pack jumped out
immediately. At around 55ltrs in capacity the
X300 is designed as a long range patrol pack
but it gives you just about enough capacity
to pack in everything you need for if you are
prepared to strap things like sleeping bags to
the outside or generally travel a little lighter. I’m
fine without the creature comforts of a big camp
bed and generally make do with a lightweight
self-inflating roll mat so I’m happy there.
The main compartment of the X300 is
accessible in two ways. Firstly via the top
opening that zips open like a flip top. Secondly

back gives a feeling of comfort but also retains
a high degree of airflow.

SPECIAL FORCES SPECIFICATION

The X300 was designed with input from SF units with
a requirement for a strong yet light weight versatile
pack which allowed for compartmentalised storage
with top and middle opening and comfort.
The requirement was for features such as
removable padded belt system, variable height
harness adjustment, 5 external storage pouches
with large main compartment. The narrow design
allows for efficient movement in a wide variety of
environments (excellent in urban environments,
narrow streets, doorways, houses etc).
The X300 has 3 x “Man Down” handles ( 1 x Top
Center 1 x left side, 1 x right side ) which allows for
2 man rapid extraction of casualty.
Access is via a helmet friendly top-opening lid
with claymore-style heavy-duty zipped pouch on
top side and also features a map style pocket
on the inside. Additional access is via the
large reinforced centre pocket; this features
a heavy duty size 10 sealed seam zip which
opens into a medium sized quick access
pocket, (the flap opens top to bottom) this
main external pocket is lined with a heavy duty
air mesh fabric which has a similar zip which
opens (bottom to top) allowing convenient
access to the middle and bottom of the pack.
The pack is covered in 1 Inch MOLLE
Webbing allowING the attachment of various
pouches to increase carrying capacity.

WHERE DID IT COME FROM? WHERE
DID IT GO? THESE ARE QUESTIONS
AS MEMBERS OF THE GHCA OR THE
ASA WE DON’T HAVE TO ASK. WHY?
BECAUSE THIS IS OUR FIGHTING
HERITAGE.
The earliest printed record we have
of Gutter Fighting is an instructor’s
curriculum outline authored by William
E. Fairbairn (trainer for the Shanghai
Municipal Police) for the Office of
Strategic Services (OSS). This curriculum
was printed in early 1942. The beauty of
this document is the SIMPLICITY of the
curriculum. It is our belief that Fairbairn
wrote this curriculum after receiving
reports from the Special Operations
Executive (SOE) and commandos as to
what worked and what did not work
behind enemy lines during England’s first
two years of the war.

The term Gutter Fighting was brought to the
commando training center by blue collar workers
from Glasgow, Scotland who volunteered
for the commandos. These were rough and
tumble street fighters who had no problem
with stomping, biting and stabbing someone
to get the upper edge. These street warriors
called “gutter rats” had nothing but disdain
for Queensbury rules. The name comes from
their battlefield (gutter) and their type of dirty
fighting (rats). This information was passed on to
us directly by Col. Rex Applegate, USA who was
assigned to William E. Fairbairn for an extended
period of time at the commando training center.
The reason gutter fighting went away was
three fold. 1. War leaves a bad taste in the
mouths of everyone. The populace was up to
their eyeballs in violence and wanted it to go
away. CQC being on the bottom of the food
chain is always the first to suffer. 2. As time
progressed so did technical warfare. The need
for personal combat did not seem as necessary
as before. 3. The influence of traditional martial
arts has literally inundated our military and
law enforcement ranks. This is evident in all the
modern CQC manuals from the early 70’s up to

today. They look more like something you’d find
in a black belt magazine ad than in a military
library. And today we are in the middle of the
ground fighting explosion (that most fights
wind up on the ground). Back in the 30’s the
techniques being taught were directly taken
from judo and ju-jitsu. Both arts are very much
ground oriented. We have to ask ourselves if
ground fighting was so important why wasn’t
it included in the OSS curriculum. If someone
takes you to the ground - bite his juggler, gouge
his eye or thrust your knife into him. We are
talking about CQC not sport, in other words,
gutter fight whenever, forever.
To answer the question – where is it now? We
have to first look at the original gutter fighting
curriculum. Then we have to ask ourselves – who
is doing it? The 1942 gutter fighting curriculum
consisted of the use of armed techniques,
knife, smachet and the cosh. Unarmed had
seven techniques: 4 hand strikes (edge-hand,
face smash, cupped-hand and chin jab): 1 kick
(stomp); an arm jerk and 1 controlling technique
(thumb lock come-a-long). The come-a-long
technique was taught only after the prisoner/
enemy was under complete control. That was it!!
4 hand strikes, 1 kick and an arm jerk to bring
him down for a foot stomp finish.
The knife section was simply a left and right
parry which is the same as our forehand and
backhand slashes and a straight thrust as our
# 1. The smachet curriculum was done by the
numbers, believe it or not; number 1 is identical
to our #1 slash, number 2 was an abdominal
thrust as our #6, number 3 was a saber cut
identical to our #2 slash, number 4 was a cutlass
cut which is identical to out #3 slash, number
5 was a pommel strike used like a chin jab and
number 6 was a pommel strike like a vertical
hammer fist. The cosh was the father of the
expandable baton. The techniques were very
similar to our stick curriculum, they all target
the head. Fairbairn’s stick drill from “Get Tough”
was also part of the OSS curriculum.
So where is GUTTER FIGHTING today? It’s in
our training program. It is being practiced and
taught by small pockets of gutter fighters spread
across the U.S. The purpose of the GHCA is
keeping this fighting tradition alive and well. So
when someone ask you what is it you do, say this

Protecting your senses should be of optimal importance for everyone, and
of all of them your sense of hearing is most certainly worth protecting. Otto
Engineerings’ new NoizeBarrier certainly offers some top quality protection.
OTTO’s NoizeBarrier consists of in ear plugs and a case which doubles duty
as a charger. The plugs offer increased situational awareness by digitally
lowering ambient noise up to 15 dB in high noise environments, with up to
40 dB protection from high impulse noise. Additionally, in enhanced hearing
mode, they amplify low noise up to 5 x.
The NoizeBarrierTM earplugs are an essential component for military
and law enforcement professionals in the war against hearing loss and
for preserving situational awareness during missions. OTTO’s dual-mode
electronic earplugs offer active hearing protection as well as a hearing
enhancement mode that provides extreme sound localization and detection.
The noise-isolating ear tips combined with proprietary sound processing
electronics enables the NoizeBarrier earplugs to respond to the user’s
unique sound environment. The earplugs provide excellent situational
awareness when sound levels are safe, up to 15 dB of protection when there
is sustained loud noise, and up to 40 dB of protection from loud impulse
noises such as blasts and gunfire.
While it may take 12 hours to charge the waterproof case from shore
power, it offers 15-30 recharges of the ear pieces. Each of those charges will
last up to 16 hours.

adaptive sport to help wounded warriors
on their journey to recovery. Established
by Prince Harry, the inaugural Invictus
Games took place in London, England,
in September 2014; the second, and
equally successful, Games took place
in Orlando, Florida, in May 2016. The
Invictus Games Toronto 2017 Organizing
Committee was tasked with planning and
executing a Games that featured more
than 550 competitors from 17 nations
participating in 12 adaptive sports. The
Invictus Games Toronto 2017 were funded
by the Government of Canada, Province
of Ontario, City of Toronto as well as

two forward and two rear facing microphones
provides front and back audio detection,
enhancing user awareness and closing the
gaps left by existing systems. 3D spatial
communication enables users to hear radio
communications in a three- dimensional listening
environment, further decreasing the cognitive
burden caused by monitoring multiple nets.
The ComCentr2 System includes the Human
Interface Device (HID), an intuitive, hand held
control unit designed to fit comfortably in
the user’s hand. Buttons on the device enable
radio transmission, volume adjustment and
switching between radios. Unlike systems
containing a fixed number of ports, the HID
includes a lower section outfitted with a custom
dongle. Supporting a wide variety of system
configurations and communication devices,

32-year-old Jamie Falvey from Farnsfield in
Nottinghamshire served in the Commandos
from 2010 to 2016, to the rank of Lance
Corporal. He served at Faslane naval base
in Scotland, in Afghanistan and was a cold
weather warfare specialist for exercises in
Norway.
In 2016 he was medically discharged after
sustaining permanent hearing damage and
tinnitus as a result of his time serving on
operations.
He now runs a personal training business

motorsport, having competed in national
and international karting events since 2006,
and is testing for the Caterham Roadsport
Championship for 2018.
The team is currently competing in the
Fun Cup championship – the first stage of
its motorsport journey towards Le Mans and
recently completed ‘the Longest Race in the
World’ at Circuit de Spa Francorchamps – a 25
hour endurance race.
Initially, the team was open to military
veterans only but has recently opened its doors
to civilian disabled drivers in an effort to widen
opportunities for disabled people to access
competitive motorsport.
Jamie took part in a rookie day with the team
at Brands Hatch on Wednesday 4th October and
was assessed for his driving skills and ability.
Having passed the assessment, he will now join
the team at their last two races of the season
later this month.
The team has developed the world’s most
advanced hand control technology to allow
its drivers to compete on equal terms with
able-bodied competitors. These controls will
be specially adapted for each driver, allowing
drivers with varying disabilities, such as Olivia

Jackson who has one arm, and double-leg
amputee Andy Searle, to race as part of the
same team.
The team is not a charity, but a competitive
racing team like any other, with each driver
being taught the business of motorsport.
Powerful partnerships are set up with

engage with personal sponsors to progress
his driving career.

competitive nature and absolutely love racing

TAKE ON CHALLENGING EXERCISE
ARMY RESERVISTS FROM 3RD BATTALION THE ROYAL WELSH, THE ONLY RESERVE INFANTRY BATTALION
IN WALES, RECENTLY SPENT TWO WEEKS IN GERMANY ON THEIR INFANTRY FIELD FIRING CAMP.
Exercise Dragons Talon was designed to
give the Battalion the chance to develop and
enhance their soldiering skills in the challenging
environment of the vast Sennelager training
area. And it was also an opportunity to learn
new skills as both The Queens Royal Hussars and
the 1st Battalion The Princess of Wales’s Royal
Regiment provided familiarisation training on the
Panther and Warrior armoured infantry vehicle
respectively.
For the reservists, who come from a broad
spectrum of backgrounds, the exercise began
with low level infantry skills in a controlled
environment before they embarked on a number
of close quarter marksmanship, grenade and fire
and manoeuvre ranges. From this they rapidly
progressed to being tested on section defence,
fire-team and platoon attacks through the woods
and heathlands of the training area.
The exercise culminated with the Battalion
completing a Company attack that saw them
conduct a minefield breach, assault specific
objectives, neutralise an armoured threat before
they seizing a bridge and clearing the remaining
enemy positions.
“Exercise Dragons Talon has been hugely
successful with the level of commitment shown
by all outstanding throughout. Not many of
the reservists, certainly at Fusilier level, will

have done an exercise like this before, it has been

a steep learning curve but they have more than
matched what has been asked of them.” remarked
Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Nigel
Crewe-Read adding: “the progression made since the
beginning of the exercise to the position where we
are conducting something as complicated as a live
firing company attack is a credit to how quickly they
have developed.
Working with the platoon of soldiers from 1st
Battalion of Grenadier Guards, who have been
attached to us, has been invaluable in terms of advice
and help they have offered and their professional
conduct - it is very encouraging seeing the reserves
working closely with them and aspiring to reach the
same standards.”
For Lance Corporal Pete Toulmin the chance to get
out on the ranges had been incredibly beneficial:
“It’s a great opportunity for us to carry out training
on this scale as it is not something we often get the
chance to do. Here we have gone from improving
our own individual skills and drills to working all the
way up to Company level attacks, it is challenging
but it develops confidence and demonstrates our
competency as a Battalion.
The younger guys have adjusted well to working in
this environment, they are enthusiastic, integrating
really well with the Regulars and while it’s hard work
it’s realistic and they are enjoying it.
Being a Reservist offers so many opportunities to
learn so many new skills, it’s a great life experience
and you can get to travel to different parts of the
world both on exercises, like this, or on adventurous
training packages.”
18 year-old student Fusilier Samuel Berry, who is
on a gap-year said of the exercise: “It has been a
brilliant introduction to the Battalion as I only passed
out of training 6 weeks ago! I am hoping to join the
regulars after completing my military history studies
so this training exercise is a great insight. I am keen
to learn as much as I can and I am looking forward
to deploying next year to Canada as part of that
development.”

HMS Ocean is the Royal Navy’s Landing Platform
Helicopter (LPH) and Fleet Flagship. A helicopter
carrier and amphibious assault ship, Ocean is
designed to deliver troops to the centre of the
action by helicopter or by landing craft. Aviation
capabilities include six helicopter operating
spots on her flight deck with space in the hangar
to hold, transport and maintain many more
aircraft. Ocean’s complement Ship’s Company
of 400 personnel includes 9 Assault Squadron
Royal Marines (9 ASRM), who operate the four
Mk5 Landing Craft Vehicle and Personnel (LCVP),
providing the projection of fighting capability
ashore for HMS OCEAN. The 21,500 tonne
amphibious assault ship was launched in 1995,
has a top speed of 16 knots and a range in excess
8,000 miles on a single tank of fuel.
HMS Ocean is the Royal Navy’s largest
operational ship, is currently the Fleet Flagship
and the R2 Landing Platform Helicopter (LPH) for
the UK and NATO. She is trained and prepared
to take on any tasking required of her and is at 5
days’ notice to sail to anywhere in the world that
she may be needed. HMS Ocean provides the UK
Government’s most flexible and agile platform and
is able to embark up to 1100 personnel and act as
a Command platform. Prior to Christmas she was
part of the Joint Expeditionary Force (Maritime) 16
deployment which included amphibious exercises
such as ALBANIAN LION and OMANI COUGAR.
HMS Ocean then provided the Command
platform for the principal maritime warfighting
command in the Gulf, Commander Task Force
50. Commodore Andrew Burns OBE Royal Navy
(Commander Amphibious Task Group) was the first
UK commander to assume the role. During this
historic deployment, HMS OCEAN steamed 23,000
miles and visited 11 countries including high
profile port calls to Egypt and Lebanon.
The Royal Marines had been based in the British
Virgin Islands ever since flying there directly from
the UK on 13 September just prior to hurricane
Irma had made land fall on the Islands. The
embarkation of over 100 skilled amphibious troops
will prove a force multiplier for HMS Ocean as she
makes her way to the Turks and Caicos Islands
to render Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster

the British Overseas Territories of the British
Virgin Islands and Anguilla and most recently, the
independent republic of Dominica.
Ocean’s contribution to the overall Department
for International Development led UK relief
operation has been significant; as an amphibious
platform she is ideally suited to working in littoral
waters to deliver stores, personnel and equipment
deep in land over any terrain by both air and
surface manoeuvre. Ocean’s significant airlift
capacity has proved particularly invaluable in a
region where roads and bridges have often been
destroyed; with Merlin and Wildcat helicopters
from 845, and 847 Naval Air Squadrons alongside
Chinooks from 18 Squadron RAF embarked. Over
the past seven days Ocean has flown 110 aviation
sorties that have between them delivered over 270
tonnes of much needed water, food, equipment
and other aid supplies from the Ship alone; this
figure doesn’t include aid stores already ashore
but subsequently moved by Ocean aviation to
those in need. In terms of technical support to the
affected areas of the region, Ocean has delivered
over 627 man-days of engineering and logistical
support enabling activity such as restoration of
electrical supplies, repairs to water treatment
systems and the recovery of other critical national
infrastructure alongside a clean up operation to
clear roads and drainage systems. Ocean also
evacuated 39 vulnerable British nationals from
Dominica, one of whom was very seriously ill and
received life saving treatment onboard.

inhabitants alongside other countries who have
requested and been granted UK assistance.
At present there are over 2000 UK military
personnel deployed to Op RUMAN including RFA
Mounts Bay, which was pre-positioned to the
region in preparation for the Hurricane season.

The Red Arrows’ distinctive Hawk aircraft arrived
at the team’s base of RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire,
earlier today (Saturday).
Eleven countries were visited in five weeks,
with the world-renowned display team helping to
showcase UK excellence in engineering, innovation,
creativity and education to millions of people.
The landing at RAF Scampton also marked a close
to the Red Arrows’ 2017 campaign – its 53rd season
– during which 70 displays were flown at home and
overseas.
Wing Commander Andrew Keith, Officer
Commanding, Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team,
said: “The tour was a great demonstration of
a key role of the Red Arrows – that of national
ambassadors, powerfully supporting and
promoting UK interests.
“We were privileged to fly to a range of countries
across Europe and the Middle East with hundreds
of thousands of people either seeing these
performances live or learning more about the team
and the UK through the resulting media coverage.
“Everywhere the team flew we were very
well-received and the tour highlighted the strong,

The deployment began just a few days after the
Red Arrows’ last UK airshow of the summer season
and began with a flypast over the Cannes Yachting
Festival – supporting British industry exhibiting at
the event.
After France, Athens Flying Week was the
destination with the Red Arrows performing
displays on back-to-back days. Moving to Jordan,
the Squadron was honoured to complete a flypast
over eight national landmarks, including Petra.
The first display in Saudi Arabia by the Red
Arrows in a decade was then staged in Jeddah, to
help mark the Kingdom’s National Day, before a
move to Kuwait – only the third time the team has
performed there.
Doha’s skyscraper-lined Corniche provided the
next venue for a display and also a special mixed
formation flypast with a Qatar Airways Airbus

Members of 335 Medical Evacuation Regiment
(335 Med Evac Regt) conduct training in
Sennelager Germany to test and update their
skills as well as training with 1 Armoured
Medical Regiment (1AMR). 335 Regiment is
unusual in that they are formally paired with
all three Armoured Medical Regiments. The
training took place over a two week period and
included;

■ Clinical training. The Regiment ran a ITC

First Course in Medical First Aid and Casualty
Evacuation for members of 335 Med Evac Regt
and 1 AMR.

■ Patient Care Pathway Demonstration whilst

in the field.

■ Military skills. Soldiers and Officers from 335

undertook a wide range of military skills inc;
CBRN, fieldcraft, tactics, patrolling etc.

1 Armoured Medical Regiment was formed on 1

April 2014 as a result of the Army 2020 changes,
by the re-designation and re-organisation of its
immediate predecessor, 1 Medical Regiment.
The Regiment now has an establishment of 306
Regular personnel, wearing seven different
cap badges, and is equipped with a mixture of
armoured ambulances – Bulldog, Mastiff and
CVRT – together with some soft-skinned Land
Rover Battlefield Ambulances.
1 Medical Regiment had only existed for six
years, having been formed on 1 April 2008 when
1 Close Support Medical Regiment disbanded to
form 1 and 2 Medical Regiments.
1 Close Support Medical Regiment had been
formed in Germany on 1 April 2000 by the
amalgamation of 1, 2 and 3 Armoured Field
Ambulances (themselves formed from the six
field ambulances of the British Army of the
Rhine, see detail below). 1 Armoured Medical
Regiment maintains links through its squadrons
to five of these original six field ambulances.
The years 2014 – 2015 were a period of major
change for the new unit, as it was reformed and
transitioned from its original role of providing
close medical support to 20th Armoured
Brigade, which was based in Sennelager,
northern Germany, under command of the 1st
(United Kingdom) Division. The Regiment came
under the operational command of the 3rd
(United Kingdom) Division on 6 January 2015,
and now forms part of the Army’s Reaction
Force, attached to 101st Logistic Brigade.
One of the squadrons (30 Squadron) from the
newly named 1 Armoured Medical Regiment
provided the nucleus of the last Close Support
Medical Regiment in Afghanistan on Op HERRICK
20 in 2014.
The Regiment moved in September 2015
from Bergen-Hohne to Dempsey Barracks,
Sennelager. This move marked the end of 70
years’ association of British military medical
units with Hohne, dating back to the liberation
of Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp on 17
April 1945.
From the end of June 2015, following the
departure of the previously co-located 2
Medical Regiment to North Luffenham, Rutland,
1 Armoured Medical Regiment earned the
distinction of becoming the last British military
medical unit remaining in Germany. As part of
the overall withdrawal of British troops, the
Regiment is scheduled to move from Sennelager
to Bhurtpore Barracks, Tidworth in 2019, thus
starting another chapter in the eventful and
distinguished history of the medical regiments
of the British Army.

Soldiers from the 1st Battalion The Princess of
Wales's Royal Regiment (1 PWRR), conduct house
clearance and contact drills within the Urban
Defence Training Area (UDTA) of Sennelager
Training Centre.
The 1st Battalion The Princess of Wales's Royal
Regiment (1 PWRR) is the very high readiness
Armoured Infantry Battalion, as part of 20
Armoured Infantry Brigade. Known in the larger
Army as a Reaction Force, 1 PWRR will provide a
force that will undertake short notice contingency
tasks and provide the Army’s conventional
deterrence for Defence.
1 PWRR is trained and equipped to undertake the
full spectrum of intervention tasks and provide
the initial basis for any future lengthy operation.
In essence, 1 PWRR will be the tip of the spear.
It is an armoured infantry battalion, known
as the Armoured Tigers and is made up of three
Warrior companies, a Fire Support Company and
Headquarters Company.
As armoured infantry, the majority of our
soldiers are mounted in Warrior Infantry Fighting
Vehicles. This heavy, metal beast is powered by a
17-litre engine and packs a fearsome punch with
its 30mm Rarden cannon and 7.62mm chain gun.
In the back of each Warrior, a section of seven
highly-trained infantry soldiers sit ready to carry
out their mission, be it taking enemy positions,
distributing aid or bringing peace to a troubled
and war torn land.
As armoured specialists, we are trained to
maintain and service the tracked vehicles that
carry us into battle. You will find us doing
this wherever we are, whether during recent
operational tours of Iraq and Afghanistan or whilst
training in Germany, Canada or Eastern.
