Problem Sheet (Stress Transformation)

1. At a point in a structural member subjected to plane stress there are normal


and shearing stresses on horizontal and vertical planes through the point, as
shown in figure. Use the stress transformation equations to determine:
a) The normal and shearing stresses on plane AB.
b) The normal and shearing stress on plane CD, which is perpendicular to
plane AB.

(Ans: -60.3 MPa, -95.8 MPa, 40.3 MPa, 95.8 MPa)

2. Use the stress transformation equations for plane stress to solve for the normal and shear stresses on
an inclined plane AB shown in the following figures:

3. The stresses shown in figure act at a point in a structural member. Determine the normal stresses and
shear stress at the point.

shown in figure (a) & (b).
i) Determine the principal stresses and the maximum shearing stress at
the point.
ii) Locate the planes on which these stresses act and show the stresses on a
complete sketch.

Assignment-I (Problem Based Learning)
1. The wood beam is subjected to a load of 12 kN. If a grain of wood in the beam at point A makes an
angle of 25° with the horizontal as shown, determine the normal and shear stress that act
perpendicular and parallel to the grain due to the loading.

2. The box beam is subjected to the 26 kN force that is applied at the center of its own width, 75 mm
from each side. Determine the principal stresses at point A & B and show the results on an element
located at these points.

3. Determine the maximum in-plane shear stress developed at point A on the cross section of the arm at
section a–a. Specify the orientation of this state of stress and indicate the results on an element at the
point.

4. The nose wheel of the plane is subjected to a design load of 12 kN.


Determine the principal stresses acting on the aluminum wheel
support at point A.

5. The pedal crank for a bicycle has the cross section shown. If it
is fixed to the gear at B and does not rotate while subjected to a
force of 75 lb, determine the principal stress in the material on
the cross section at point C using Mohr’s circle.
6. The point on the surface of the cylindrical pressure vessel in Fig. is subjected to the state of plane
stress. Determine the absolute maximum shear stress at this point.

7. The 50 mm diameter drive shaft AB on the helicopter is subjected to an axial tension of 50 kN and a
torque of 450 N.m. Determine the principal stresses and the maximum in-plane shear stress that act at
a point on the surface of the shaft.

8. The bolt is fixed to its support at C. If a force of 100 N is applied to the wrench to tighten it, determine
the principal stresses developed in the bolts shank at point A & B. Represent the results on an element
located at these points. The shank has a diameter of 6 mm.
