An Interview with Bambang Setiadi

Our Interviewees, Mr. Bambang Setiadi at this time work on Chevron Indonesia. Mr. Bambang
have many work experiences from 1987 till now. Mr. Bambang is geologist who graduated from
Trisakti University.

Geologist Role
In the beginning, geophysics use seismic method in subsurface and the result from geophysics
seismic analytic interpreted by geologist and geologist mapping subsurface. From mapping
subsurface result, the geologist determines drilling location, usually in highest altitude from the
formation or anticline. Geologist determine depth and location from formation rock where the oil
trapped on drilling recommendation. After that geologist help drilling engineer to determine
techniques for drilling use Horizontal, vertical, or directional drilling. Geologist make drilling
program too, not only mapping but geologist determine what log needed and EOR method.
Geologist analyze core from subsurface to find characteristic of rock. Geologist always standby
on production well to analyze if have some accident likes blow out and gas pocket.

Petroleum System
Source Rock, Cap Rock, Reservoir, Migration, and trap is the requirements for the formation of
petroleum system. Data petroleum system obtained from geophysics seismic interpretation.
Know characteristic from petroleum system on well is really important, because we need to
know the best treatments to our well site. Source rock is containing organic matter, product from
source rock is hydrocarbon matter. Migration is process of organic matter transport to Reservoir.
Reservoir is place oil and gas gathering on subsurface, reservoir rock has good porosity and
permeability. Cap rock has function to hold organic matter leave the reservoir.

Challenges for Engineers

in this time is difficult to find oil conventionally, hard to find oil in anticline structure and
stratigraphic trap. In the future the engineers from oil industry will use non-conventional likes
shale oil, tide reservoir or find oil on deep water. Low oil price impact to oil industry to reduce
exploration activity. For next generation of engineers need specific specialty likes petrophysics,
stratigraphic, and many more. The structure of non-conventional oil is more complex than
conventional, so need more skill to develop the field. At this time, reserve oil in Indonesia is go
down, hard to find new explorational well site.
