Topic/Title Difference between Ionic and Covalent Compound

Grade Level 9
Time Allotment 60 minutes
Content Standard
1. how atoms combine with other atoms by transferring or by sharing electrons
2. forces that hold metals together
Performance Standards
Analyze the percentage composition of different brands of two food products and decide on the
products’ appropriate percentage composition
Learning Competency/ Objectives
1. Recognize Ionic and Covalent compound based on their physical properties.
2. Define what is Ionic and Covalent Compound.
ELICIT (5 minutes) ICT
Video Presentation
Compound are made up of two or more elements that is chemically bonded together
The Teacher will give examples of compound (Ionic Bond)
The Teacher will give examples of compound (Covalent Bond)
ENGAGE (5 minutes)
Observe the following glasses with mixture.

Questions:
1. What do you observe? What happened to the solute in Glass A? What happened to the
powdered solute in glass B?
2. Why did the salt dissolve in water?
3. Why did the naphthalene balls did not dissolve in water?
EXPLORE (15 minutes) ESP
Checking of materials to be used in the activity

Laboratory Safety:
 1. An instructor or a guide. This person by virtue of prior experience would know the rights and the
wrongs in a lab and can guide you safely on the use of lab equipment

2. Usually there are approved safety goggles that are worn while working in the lab. These safety
glasses protect anything from entering your eyes

3. Make sure you read the bottle labels carefully and only use what you are supposed to use during
an experiment. You should not try out anything on your own unless you are very sure of what
reagents or chemicals you need to use and their results

4. Do not touch anything that you are not authorized to touch especially if it is a chemical or an acid
that could cause harm to you

 5. Do not eat or drink anything in a laboratory. If you are not careful you could end up in severe
trouble in case you happen to ingest anything that causes you harm

6. Always ensure that you wear proper fitting clothes and nothing that is too loose. You should also
wear your lab coat to avoid spilling anything on your clothes

 7. Wear proper footwear that is closed. Sandals and open toed slippers are a strict no no and should
be avoided

8. One must also know how to use the lab equipments properly and should ask the right way of
usage, in case they do not know

Activity 6: Differences between Ionic and Covalent Compounds

Objectives:
Recognize ionic and covalent compound based on their physical properties.

Materials
improvised electrical conductivity apparatus
alcohol burner
spoon
sugar (sucrose)
paraffin wax (candle wax)
salt (sodium chloride)
vetsin (monosodium glutamate)
vials or very small bottles
dropper

Procedure:
1. Get a pinch of salt, place it in a spoon and heat it with the use of an alcohol burner. Do
the same with vetsin, sugar and grated candle wax. Record what you observe in column
1 of Table 6.
2. Place a pinch of salt, vetsin, sugar and grated candle wax in separate vials. Dip the
electrode of the electrical conductivity apparatus in each vial. Be sure you clean the
electrode before transferring to the next vial. Record your observations in column 2 of
Table6andspecifythattheobservationisfor the solid sample.
3. Add approximately 3 mL of water in each vial. Test the conductivity of the compound
with water. Record your observations in column 2 of Table 6 and specify that the
observation is for the solid sample added with water.

EXPLAIN (15 minutes)

ELABORATE (5 minutes)
Properties of Ionic Compound
1. It is solid at room temperature
2. It dissolves in water
3. It conducts electricity when dissolved in water
Properties of Covalent Compound
1. Low melting point and boiling point
2. Do not conduct electricity
3. Less soluble than ionic compound
4. Not good conductor of heat
EVALUATE (10 minutes) ESP

________1. HCl – Hydrochloric Acid

________2. NaCl – Sodium Chloride
________3. CH3 COOH – Acetic Acid
________4. C6H8O3 – Ascorbic Acid
________5. CH3 COCH3 – Acetone
