Beyond Survival:

Under the repressive authoritarian regime where you need security clearance for all group
events, even a wedding! There was no possibility of “clean” to undertake systematic action for
the developing the level of mental health in Syria, my country. The fist of aspiration (the fire of
ambition) besieges everything and even if I thought of doing work which was not of a political
nature, politics would entangle me in the snares of its corruption and the corruption which stood
in the way of obtaining a license for any non­governmental civic associations.

In this political climate, in 2008 we started a volunteer group with a group of psychologists and
those concerned with mental health. Its activities included weekly meetings to discuss a variety
of topics within the field of psychotherapy, and sometimes a film showing that deals with
psychiatric illnesses and a post­film discussion. Occasionally we would run some training
workshops on a particularly important subject.

Despite insufficient budget, that was never more than $200, we pursue our existing activities on
fundamental principles from essentials of mainstream psychological culture. We base our work
on correcting the misconceptions around psychology, and the necessity of a multidisciplinary
approach to psychiatric cases where psychiatrists, therapists, social workers and the
enlightened religious elders can cooperate in order to help the patient to overcome their crisis
and reach a state of psychological and social well­being. Our aspirations were great and our
goals were long­term and we have continued our work for nearly 3 years since the beginning of
2011, when the Syrian Revolution began.

The Syrian Revolution
­ The outbreak of the Syrian Revolution was an extension of the Arab Spring, which began in the
Arab region. The revolution surprised everyone and no one expected it to take place in a country
controlled by the elite who had no qualms about committing atrocities in order to stay in power.
The revolution took everyone by surprise, even those who took part in it; when we would go out
to demonstrate and cheer for our freedom, we didn’t believe it of ourselves!

What Syrian Bright Future needs:

Despite all our efforts and the outstanding services that we have provided, we need greater
support in terms of quality and quantity, so that our giving can increase and develop. The specific
resources that we require are:

­ Constant and steady financial support for a few years in order to continue carrying out our
projects exceedingly well. By the end of this year, most of our projects will have only been
running for a few months and the organisation needs third parties to support and adopt these
projects for the next few years thereby enabling us to make strategic plans a reality.

­ Steady financial assistance for administrative expenses, so that we are able to tailor salaries
for experts in human resources, media, travel and transportation expenses. Also, to secure a
fixed location in order to continue working without interruption. This would also allow us to
communicate and liaise with international bodies, attend conferences, and promote projects that
yield long­lasting results such as, training and scientific research.

­ We need aid to ensure the quality control of the services we provide, and to develop ways to
assess our performance and improve it.

Ultimately, we started as a small seedling in a jungle of dangers and with a budget not exceeding
$200 and despite all the difficulties we faced, we did not stop. We followed the course and we
re­grouped, not content to remain as victims but we set off to be amongst the survivors. But
survival is not enough to realise our aims and so we worked together with many of our dedicated
patrons so that we may become a successful model for others. We benefit the Syrian refugees
and those who have welcomed us from the Jordanians too and have transformed adversity into
benefit, threats into opportunity, and the dream into reality grows day after day. We have doubled
the budget of our projects to a thousand! Our goals evolved and are now not only restricted to
treating the effects of the humanitarian catastrophe that has befallen the Syrian people, but have
also extended much further. It has become our goal to raise the profile of mental health in our
native society, and in the host community, to the extent that an ambitious man can aspire to.
Who knows, maybe we can contribute to the development of mental health in the world? Only
then can we we feel that our name has become a reality, a bright future.
