LESSON 2

Lesson Plan 2 Dividing Fractions and Dividing Mixed Numbers

Performance Objective 2a: When given 5 fractions students will be able to

write the reciprocal of the fraction correctly 4 out of 5 times.

Performance Objective 2b: When given 5 division problems, students will

be able to divide the fraction correctly 4 out of 5 times.

Performance Objective 2c: When given 5 division problems students will

be able to divide fractions by whole numbers 4 out of 5 times.

Performance Objective 2d: When given 5 problems students will be able

to divide mixed numbers by converting mixed numbers into improper

fractions and dividing correctly 4 out of 5 times.

Materials/Resources: Student iPads with Pencil Installed. whiteboards,

Answer Garden on iPads, Projector.

Time: 1 Hour

Pre-Instructional Activities:

• Warm-Up:

o Cumulative Practice: Dividing Whole Numbers

• 876/63

• 365/73

o Vocabulary Practice: reciprocal

• Exploration 1 (Students will use iPads and the program answer

garden to share their model with the class. Have students take a

picture of model or draw the model in answer garden. Students

will look over each other’s models and then discuss what

students notice and wonder about the models.)

o Students will use strips of paper to model division by

fractions.

▪ How many two-thirds are in four?

Content Presentation:

• Example 1: Demonstrate finding the reciprocal of 3/5, 9/5, and

2.

• Example 2: Demonstrate dividing a fraction by a fraction.

3 5 1 2
o A. 4 ÷ 12 B. 6 ÷ 3

• Example 3: Demonstrate dividing a fraction by a whole number.

• Example 4: Demonstrate 15 ÷ 3 3.

Learner Participation: (Each Try-It corresponds with the matching

example.) Try-Its will be done on Pencil App to show student work.)

• Try-It 1: Write the reciprocal.

o a) 5

2
o b) 3
o c) 5/6

• Try-It 2: Divide. Write answer in simplest form

o c) 2𝟑 ÷ 𝟕 𝟑

Follow Through Activities: Mini Assessment (See Appendix B)

• Closure: Have Students explain what they can predict about the

product of two proper fractions or two mixed numbers.

Performance Objectives will be assessed on the mini assessments. Students

will correctly solve at least 4 out of the 5 problems on the two assessments.

Lesson Plan Summary

The lesson plan starts with a warm-up that covers materials that students

have learned in previous years. Students will then explore dividing fractions

by trying to model a problem with strips of paper. Students will then use

their iPad and the program answer garden to share their exploration with the

class. The lesson then goes into 4 examples with corresponding try-it’s to

work on dividing fractions. After examples and practice students will have

two mini assessments to complete.
