Content and Achievement Standards


 Anchor Standard #4
o Audiate and speak or sing music written in the clef appropriate for their own
voice/instrument and in major keys, and simple or compound meter using gesture
and/or traditional music notation.
 Anchor Standard #8
o Play and become aware of correct posture, characteristic tone quality, accurate
tuning and intonation, good breath support, proper bowing, and/or correct hand
position.
o Play musical selections with accurate pitch, articulation, rhythm, and appropriate
tempo, dynamics, and balance with beginning level music and demonstrate sight
reading at an appropriate leve

Objectives
 Students will breath in 1 out 8 using all their air.
 Students will play 8 count Bbs with good entrances and releases.
 Students will play #87 playing correct 8th notes and rests.
 Students will be able to aurally identify and repeat rhythm and pitches (singing and on
the clarinet).
 Students will understand theme and variation.

Materials

Procedures
1. Students will practice breathing.
a. Breathing in 1 out 8.
b. “Raise your hand if you’re getting all of your air out? Try again and try to
knock me over with your air.”
2. Students will play 8 count Bb.
a. Focus on breathing together, entrances, and releases.
3. Students will play #87 Rhythm Builder.
a. 100% on eighth notes and rests.
4. The instructor will say a rhythm on a neutral syllable and the students will repeat.
a. “We’re going to do something a little different today, listen and repeat after
me.”
5. The instructor will sing that rhythm with pitches on the note names and the students
will repeat.
a. “Now I’m going to add pitches to it. Listen and then repeat after me.”
6. Students will sing the passage and finger on the clarinets.
7. Students will play the four measure passage on their clarinets.
8. Instructor will repeat the same process for variation 1
a. Rhythm on a neutral syllable
b. Singing with the note names
c. Singing and fingering on clarinets
d. Playing on clarinets
9. Instructor will ask students how the two phrases sounded similar.
a. “How did those two sound similar, how did they sound different?”
10. Instructor will explain theme and variation.
a. “Open your books to #90 and let’s read variation 2.”
11. Students will play all of #90.
Assessment
Assessment will be informal and determined through answering questions. It will also be
determined through participation and ability to identify the rhythm, notes, and
fingerings of #90.
Future Lessons
Future lessons will revisit theme and variation. Students can create their own variation
to #90.
UDL
Representation: Students will learn #90 aurally and visually.

Expression: Students will be able to show their knowledge through speaking, singing, and
playing their instrument.
