5. USE OF THE SOFTWARE

5.1 Registering the software
The software must be registered in order to use it. A trial period of 31 days begins when the
software is installed. After the trial period ends, it will not be possible to use the software
without applying to CONTROLS for a registration code.
All the functions of the software are fully operational during the trial period.

NOTE:
The software uses the system clock of the PC to work out how many days of a trial period
remain. If the PC date or time are changed after the software is installed, it will no longer
be possible to register the software on the PC.

During the trial period, the registration window is displayed every time the software is
started. To use the software without registering, click the Skip button. The number of days
remaining in the trial period are displayed in red at the top of the window.
The software can still be registered even if the trial period has expired.

Fig. 5-1

The procedure to register the software is as follows:

1. Install and run the software according to the instructions given in Section 3 of this
manual.

2. In the registration window that appears when the software starts, you will see a
Registration number.

3. Contact CONTROLS After Sales Service (preferably by emailing service@controls.it)

with the Registration number and ask for an Unlock code for the software 82-
SW/CMU.

NOTE:
You must tell CONTROLS your Registration number and the name of the software you
want to register in order to receive an Unlock code.
You should also include the acknowledgement (ACK) number of your purchase and the
name of your company in any correspondance.

To continue using the software while you wait for the Unlock code, click the Skip button on
the registration window.

4. When you receive the Unlock code, click the Register button on the registration
window.

5. In the next window, type the Unlock code into the cells provided.
The unlock code should have 16 characters: enter 4 characters in each cell; do not
enter any hyphens or spaces. For example, this unlock code: 9526-6452-7042-4126 is
shown entered below.

5.1.1 Registration troubleshooting

If you followed the steps in Section 5.1 but the software registration failed, check the
following things before contacting CONTROLS:

1. Did you provide CONTROLS with the correct Registration number?

If you made a mistake in the number you gave to CONTROLS, the Unlock code will be
wrong. Check the number and repeat steps 3 to 6 of Section 5.1.

2. Did you enter the Unlock code correctly?

If you enter the wrong code, make a mistake in the code or enter too few or too many
characters, the code will not work and you will see the error message shown below.
Click the Retry button on the error message to enter the code again, or click the Skip
button to continue using the software on the trial period.

Fig. 5-4

3. Is your Registration number ‘0’?

This means that the User Account Controls have not been set correctly and it is not
possible to register the software on the PC. See Section 3.2.

4. Has the clock or calendar of the PC been changed since the software was installed?
Changing the time or date of the PC will lock the software and it will not be possible to
register the software on the PC.

5. Has someone attempted to bypass the registration procedure?

Attempting to bypass or hack the registration procedure will lock the software and it
will not be possible to register the software on the PC.

6.1.2 Marshall test module

a. ASTM D1559/ ASTM D6927/ AASHTO T245

Calculation
Laboratory molded specimens shall satisfy the thickness requirement of 63.5 6 2.5 mm (2.50
6 0.10 in.). Specimens within the thickness tolerance may be corrected based on specimen
volume or thickness. Stabilities determined on field cores with large variation in volume or
thickness shall also be corrected. However, results with larger corrections should be used
with caution. Correction factors (correlation ratios) are given in Table 1. The correlation
ratio is used in the following manner.

A=BxC
where:
A = corrected stability,
B = measure of stability (load), and
C = correlation ratio from Table 1.

82-SW/CMU Rev.1 EN 87 14.03.2014

Manuale di Istruzione SW/CMU
SW/CMU Instruction Manual

The report shall include the following information:

− Type of sample tested (laboratory mixed sample, plant mixed sample, or pavement
core specimen).
− If available, the nature of bituminous mixture, including aggregate type and grading,
binder grade, and binder content.
− Individual and average specimen bulk specific gravities.
− Height of each test specimen in millimetres (or inches) to the nearest 0.25 mm (0.01
in.).
− Individual and average values of Marshall stability (uncorrected and corrected if
required) to the nearest 50 N (or 10 lbf).
− Individual and average value of Marshall flow in units of 0.25 mm (0.01 in.) or in
units of mm directly, where Flow (0.01 in.) = 4 x Flow (mm), as well as the method
used for determining flow (peak or tangent offset).
− Test temperature to the nearest 0.2°C (0.4°F).

b. ASTM D5581

Calculation
Specimens within the thickness tolerance may be corrected based on specimen volume or
thickness. Stabilities determined on field cores with large variation in volume or thickness
shall also be corrected. However, results with larger corrections should be used with caution.
Correction factors (correlation ratios) are given in Table 1. The correlation ratio is used in
the following manner.

A=BxC
where:
A = corrected stability,
B = measure of stability (load), and
C = correlation ratio from Table 1.

The report shall include the following information:

− Type of sample tested (laboratory sample or pavement core specimen),
− The height of each test specimen in inches (or millimetres),
− Average maximum load in pounds-force (or newtons) of three specimens, corrected
when required,
− Average flow value, in hundredths of an inch (twenty-five hundredths of a
millimetre) of three specimens, and
− Test temperature.

Manuale di Istruzioni SW/CMU
SW/CMU Instruction Manual

c. EN12697-34

Calculation
The maximum load attained represents the stability of the mix only if the specimen height
equals the required 63,5 mm. A corrected stability shall be reported by multiplying the
maximum load with the correction factor calculated from the following equations using the
volume of the specimen as determined in accordance with with EN 12697-6:

c = 5,2 e –0,025 9 h = 5,2 e –3,2 ⋅ 10 (–6) ν

where
c is the correction factor;
h is the height of the specimen (in millimetres);
ν is the volume of the specimen determined in 6.1 (in cubic millimetres).
The stability, S, is reported to the nearest 0,1 kN.

To obtain the flow value F, measure on the graph of force versus deformation the distance
from the intersection of the tangent and the base line, A, to the point where the maximum
load is achieved, M. The flow values Ft and FT are similarly obtained.

Record the flow values, F, Ft and FT, to the nearest 0,1 mm.

Test results shall be considered reliable if both the variation in stability between specimens,
VS, is less than 15 % and the variation in flow between specimens, Vf, is less than 20 %.
Reject the test specimen with the largest variation and obtain the average value of the other
specimens if either:
− the stability value from one or more specimens differs from the average stability by
more than 15 %, or
− the flow value from one or more specimens differs from the average flow by more
than 20 %.

Furthermore, if any value differs from the new average by more than 15 % for stability or 20
% for flow, repeat the test.

The Marshall quotient shall be obtained by the calculation of S/F and reporting the value
obtained to 0,1 kN/mm.
