Dear Diary,
Good news! We got a letter from Dad today. The minute he received our new
address, he wrote back. He says his ship will be leaving San Francisco any day now
Mom’s asleep, and I’m gazing at the framed picture of him between our beds:
Dad’s got a cigarette in one hand as he leans against a ship railing. His pale blue
eyes seem to stare right at me, though I wasn’t even born when the picture was taken.
I just wrote him a letter. I tried to sound cheerful. I kept my fingers crossed as
I wrote that we’re living in a wonderful place, and I have lots of new friend.
