CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
Work is one of the foundations of the economy of a country. It is not
unbeknownst that having a job is what makes our country grow and a family to live.
Some studies about work focus only on the satisfaction of a worker in their income and
not the worker's commitment to their job. The commitment of a worker in his job is
essential to the entire work itself. According to Celik (2008), “Organizational
commitment can be defined as the emotional responses which an employee has towards
his organization”. It plays a big role in worker’s everyday interaction in their work and
also a huge part of their personal life. Countries like the Philippines are facing a lot of
issue about the working income of minimum wage earners. The government itself admits
that increasing the current minimum income will result in a less available job, low
employment, and poverty. With these workers who received a minimum amount of
salary, it is hard to predict whether a worker is still committed to their job. Minimum
income is a livable amount but still cannot say whether it motivates them to be more
committed or otherwise. The workers with minimum income still live and can manage
their salary for every single day. The level of work commitment could also predict if a
worker is good or bad at tracking their money. According to Mehta (2018), “Financial
management refers to the strategic planning, organizing, directing, and controlling of
financial undertakings in an organization or an institute”. Financial management helps the
workers to continue every day. The first and main priority of the workers is themselves
and not others.
In this study, the researchers attain to grasp information about the work
commitment and its relation to the financial management of workers whose salary is in
the minimum. The researchers chose the topic of the study because of the relation of it to
the situation of employment and salary in the Philippines and how the respondents deal
with it every day in work by their interaction, and in managing their salary. The
researchers also aim to spread awareness about the study here at our country and be heard
by the government to come up with a clearer understanding of the topic. With these
variables, all workers are involved but a minimum wage earner is greatly affected. This
study will help minimum wage earners to be understood by the government and will also
help the government to come up with the implementation of programs. Programs that will
improve the workers to be more committed at work and how to handle their income.
The main objective of this study is to determine the work commitment level and
the financial management of the minimum wage earners along with developing
recommendations that targets the workers commitment in their job, financial
management, and their workplace. The researchers aim to help improve the rules and
program that is related to the workers behavior, enthusiasm, and commitment towards
their job.

Hypothesis
HO: There is no significant relationship between the level of work commitment of the
respondents when they grouped according to their demographic profile?
HO: There is no significant relationship between the level of financial management of the
respondents when they grouped according to their demographic profile?
HO: There is no significant relationship between the level of work commitment and
financial management of the respondents?
This study will be undertaken to find out the relationship between work
commitment and financial management of selected minimum wage earners in Quezon
City.
Minimum wage earners. This study will help them be knowledgeable about managing
their income and increases their level of enthusiasm and commitment to their job by
knowing the most suitable job for them wherein they are committed and passionate so
that they can maximize the efficiency of their efforts.
Employers. This study will let them know the best strategy to bring out the 100%
commitment of their employees to enhance the employee's work. This research will serve
as a guide for the employers to improve rules and add helpful programs that will produce
the best and most productive workers.
Future researchers. This study will help future researchers to have a background about
this type of topic so that they can improve this topic on their own. This research will also
serve as a basis to compare and contrast this studies findings to the future studies results.
School. This study will help the school to realize some of their student's status to make an
exclusive discount and freebies especially for the students who have difficulties in
financially. This research will guide the school in implementing programs like in
scholarships and allowance to help the students in educational assistance.
Definition of Terms
In this study, commitment is associated with work that describes the level of
enthusiasm and passion of the subject towards their job. Work commitment serve as the
independent variable of this study.
In this study, it serves as the dependent variable that the researchers tend to
measure in this study. It refers to how the respondents spend and save their money.
Minimum Wage - the lowest pay for an hour’s work that can legally be paid to a worker
(Cambridge English Dictionary, 2019).
Wage Earner - a person who works for wages or salary (Merriam Webster, 2019).
In this study, wage earner is associated with the minimum wage. Minimum wage
earners serve as the respondents of this research.
