Directions/Procedures
1. CHAMPS
a. C - Level 0 during instruction, Level 2 when working
b. H - Raise your hand
c. A - Creating Personal Pony Bead Patterns
d. M - Sitting on your pockets and staying in your space
e. P - Using the beads only for your pattern, carefully following along with the steps, and
following the pattern.
2. Finish up the students own designs. They need to have their design fully done on the graph
paper in a well thought out manner before they move on to physically creating it.
3. For students who have not started a design:
a. Give the students graph paper and colored pencils.
b. They will then create their own pony bead design based on what they learned. Tell them
to make larger and more intricate designs so they can add detail.
c. They will have to color all their pony beads on the paper so we can see the final design,
and also take a black pen and draw how the string will be looped through the beads to
display their understanding.
d. They need to have their design fully done on the graph paper in a well thought out
manner before they move on to physically creating it. Designing should take some time
so that it is done correctly. It should not be completed in just 5 minutes.
e. Once they are done, the counselor must check their design for accuracy before letting
the student start creating. It is the counselor’s job to make sure their design is accurate
and that it can be used to make a design.
4. Students with a completed paper design:
a. When students have a completed design, allow them to start picking their beads and
putting it on string. Walk around and observe to help with any questions and to make
sure that they are following their diagram correctly,
b. Allow the students to pick their beads and begin their design.
c. Give the students a baggie with their name on it to hold all their designs, beads, etc.

5. Finish up the students own design. If any students have finished their own, let them make
another smaller one.

Suggestions:
Steps for Basic Pony Beading (This example is a lizard, but the same motion applies for any
pattern):
Risk Management
● Make sure scissors are being used correctly. No student should be moving around with scissors
and they should only be used to cut the lanyard string. Make sure are not pointing at others
with scissors or touching themselves or others with the scissors.
● Pony beads and lanyard hooks are small. Make sure no student puts these pieces in their mouth
so they do not choke.
● Make sure the lanyard string is only being used for weaving, and not being put around anyone’s
neck.

Adaptations/Plan B

● For students who finish quickly:

○ Allow them to create more than one personal design
● For students who are struggling:
○ Sit down next to them and work through the project step by step
○ Have some suggestions for designs they can make
