HOW

TO AVOID
PLAGIARISM

Felicity A. Juan Mrs. Bernadeth R. Diraya

VIII-Anthurium Research
1.) Paraphrase –

So you have found information that is perfect for your research paper.
Read it and put it into your own words. Make sure that you do not copy
verbatim more than two words in a row from the text you have found. If
you do use more than two words together, you will have to use
quotation marks.

Example 1:

Original-
“Many flowers have evolved to be attractive to animals, so as to cause
them to be vectors for the transfer of pollen.”

Don’t:
Since many flowers are attractive to animals, the transfer of pollen is
caused by the vectors which is because of the animals.
Do:
Flowers are studied to be alluring to other animals, causing them to do
the transferring of the pollen when the animals went to that plant and
putt the pollen on other flowers.
Example 2:
Original-
“Carbon dioxide, water and light are all needed for photosynthesis to
take place. Photosynthesis happens in the leaves of a plant.”

Don’t:
“For photosynthesis to take place in the leaves of a plant, Carbon
Dioxide, water and light are all needed.”
Do:
“Photosynthesis is a process that takes place inside the plant cells.
Carbon Dioxide, water and light are the necessary things for it to work.”

Example 3:
Original-
”Rainbows can be full circles. However, the observer normally sees only
an arc formed by illuminated droplets above the ground, and centred
on a line from the sun to the observer's eye.”

Don’t:
Rainbow is a full circle. But, the viewer sees only an arc formed by the
droplets on the ground and centred on a line from the sun to them.
Do:
Based from studies, rainbows are not actually an arced shaped line,
which most of us sees but is actually in a circle formed.
Example 4:
Original-
“Bees are adapted for feeding on nectar and pollen, the former
primarily as an energy source and the latter primarily for protein and
other nutrients.”

Don’t:
The former primarily as an energy source and the latter primarily for
protein and other nutrients which is nectar and pollen were adapted by
bees for feeding.
Do:
A bee needs pollen and nectars from flowers which is the source of
protein with other nutrients because it’s what they feed and use to
produce honey.
Example 5:
Original-
“The most valuable pearls occur spontaneously in the wild, but are
extremely rare. These wild pearls are referred to as natural pearls.”

Don’t:
Natural pearls are wild pearls that occur spontaneously in the wild, but
are extremely rare.
Do:
There are pearls that are very rare and only occurs in the natural way.
They are called natural pearls which came from the sea.
2. Properly Quote
Using outside evidence is important in academic writing, but those
sources must be used appropriately. You can include information from
outside sources through proper quoting. When quoting a source, use
the quote exactly the way it appears. No one wants to be misquoted.
Most institutions of higher learning frown on “block quotes” or quotes
of 40 words or more.
-When including a quote in your research paper, you must not forget to
put a quotation mark and make it exactly the way it is said by the
author.
Example:
“We’re born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through our love
and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment that we’re not
alone.”- Orson Welles

“A woman knows the face of the man she loves as a sailor knows the
open sea.”- Honore de Balzac

“A loving heart is the truest wisdom.”- Charles Dickens

“The holy passion of friendship is of so sweet and steady and loyal and
enduring a nature that it will last through a whole lifetime, if not asked
to lend money.”,- Mark Twain

“In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but
the silence of our friends.” - Martin Luther King
3. Add Value
Do not try to use all information you find in your sources. Try and add
some value to the topic by including some of your own insights. This is
going to score you better marks anyway. It shows that you understand
what you are talking about. You can only do this by researching
extensively until you get to a point where all the information clicks.

Example 1:
Original-

“Biotechnology is technology that utilizes biological systems, living

organisms or parts of this to develop or create different products.”

With value:
Biotechnology is the study about “biological systems”, which can help in
living organisms by developing or producing materials and products
which can make our life easier
Example 2:
Original-
“The inner, rocky planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. The
outer planets are gas giants Jupiter and Saturn and ice giants Uranus and
Neptune.”

With Value:
There are a total of 8 planets in our solar system. Each one of them has
different characteristics. It includes the Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars,
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Example 3:

life is one of the most important influences on mental and physical
health.”

physical health. When a person have a good social life to others, his/her
mental or social health would be healthier and stronger.
Example 4:

activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical
problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at
home.”

activities. People with depression may have mental and physical diseases
and uneasy to interact to social life.

Example 5:
Original-

especially from students. It can result to the feeling of anger, frustration
and uneasiness in everything.
