Course Title : Strategic Management for Healthcare Organizations
Course Instructor :

Course Description
Strategic management function within contemporary health services organization with focus on
organizational strategic planning processes including principles and methods of strategic
assessment, strategy formulation, evaluation, implementation, and control, as well as the role and
function of marketing strategy as part of the strategic implementation process.

Course Objectives
The objectives of the course are:
 to become familiar with the components of a strategic plan and the strategic planning
process including Health Care Marketing
 to become familiar with the tools of strategic analysis and planning and their use through
the analysis of cases
 to develop the analytical skills required to be a strategic manager

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:


 describe the relationship of an organization’s strategy to it’s mission, vision, goals and
objectives
 explain the strategic planning process for a health care organization
 analyze the external and internal environment of the organization
 identify competitive forces in a systematic manner
 identify issues of strategic importance that need to be addressed
 plan supporting marketing and financial analyses used in strategic planning
 appreciate implementation issues
 become familiar with ways to evaluate strategy

The focus of the contact programme will be on building the analytical skills necessary to strategic
thinking. This will be done through case analysis and discussions. Much of the work will be done
in groups. The work following the contact programme (readings, assignments, examinations) will
develop a more complete understanding of the strategic management process.

The online classes will emphasis on the theories and principles followed in strategic management.

Evaluation Guidelines:

1. For Closed Book tests: No books or reference material of any kind will be permitted.
Laptops/Mobiles of any kind are not allowed. Exchange of any material is not allowed.
2. For Open Book exams: Use of prescribed and reference text books, in original (not photocopies) is
permitted. Class notes/slides as reference material in filed or bound form is permitted. However,
loose sheets of paper will not be allowed. Use of calculators is permitted in all exams.
Laptops/Mobiles of any kind are not allowed. Exchange of any material is not allowed.
3. If a student is unable to appear for the Regular Test/Exam due to genuine exigencies, the student
should follow the procedure to apply for the Make-Up Test/Exam. The genuineness of the reason for
absence in the Regular Exam shall be assessed prior to giving permission to appear for the Make-up
Exam. Make-Up Test/Exam will be conducted only at selected exam centres on the dates to be
announced later.
It shall be the responsibility of the individual student to be regular in maintaining the self-study schedule as
given in the course handout, attend the lectures, and take all the prescribed evaluation components such as
Assignment/Quiz, Mid-Semester Test and Comprehensive Exam according to the evaluation scheme
provided in the handout.
