Getting Started

For device installation and activation, please refer to SRP Installation

manual.

Run the program

Double click DFL C Panel to run the DFL control panel.
Click SRP Toshiba/Fujitsu Repairs module to run the program.

In the program

Now you are ready to use the all the functions in the SRP Toshiba/Fujitsu Firmware Repair Tool.
Once you have started the program, the interface below will show and you will need to do a
step by step diagnosis to determine problems and try to repair.

Like SRP WD and ST, SRP Toshiba/Fujitsu has a similar interface that allows you to control drive
and load drive firmware to the SRP Toshiba/Fujitsu device.
Power off and on

Start task

Identify drive and scan drive health

Status register shows the drive status as well as error information.

Step by step Toshiba drive diagnosis

Connect your Toshiba drive to DFL SRP.

Run the program and click to power on the drive

Device will start to scan the drive, “searching the disk” is shown, listen to the drive sound,
as well as see the Status Register.
1. Drive running smooth and no noise or any abnormal sound, Status register
shows DRD and DSC, “search disk complete”. This suggests drive has no

significant firmware or hardware problem, you can click to continue to

next step.
2. Drive spinning with noise (clicking/scratching/ticking sound), Status register
BSY. This suggests a hardware problem, check head.
3. Drive spinning without noise, Status register BSY. This suggests a firmware
problem or hardware problem.
4. Drive spinning with slight ticking sounds, status register DRD and DSC, this
suggests a ROM or PCB problem.

Scan drive health if drive is detected and spinning without noise. Click

If some of the drive information is not shown or shown incorrectly (capacity), you
should exit this interface and start to diagnose the drive without scanning for drive
health.

Click to start scanning, a dialog box will pop up.

Modify Start LBA and End LBA to choose scan length.

Choose Block Size to set the size of one block, default value is optimized.
Scan Type
Quick Scan is the scan type prioritize speed that it will only spend a certain amount of
time on one block even though there are many bad sectors. Quick Scan uses with Read
Verify function, and it will try its best not to freeze the drive even when drive has a lot of
bad sectors. Use this for normal quick drive health test.
Read will only read sectors while Write will write zero to sectors. Use this when you want
to only read drive or zero fill drive.
Save Defect as File will allow users to save found defects to file after scanning.
Skip Bad Block will skip bad blocks in scanning.

Scan results give hint for drive health. Red, orange and green blocks mean sectors that are
not so health, if you find many red or green blocks, means your drive has a bad condition
that you need to image drive to recover data, or your drive head is weak, that you need to
use selective head imaging to recover data. (Refer to DDP manual for imaging and selective
head imaging functions).

Use Soft reset or Hard reset if your drive is stuck in the process of scanning for bad sectors.
Click cross to exit current interface.

• Click to continue to next step.

Choose Toshiba or Fujitsu depending on the drive you have.

We choose Toshiba here first.
Click Obtain Details, drive info will show and like above picture, click OK to continue.
If some info is missing or incorrect, this suggests a hardware or firmware failure,
• Head failure, if after clicking obtain details and drive starts to click loud, it can mean a bad
head, stop operation and open drive to check.
• PCB failure, if it gives ticking sound after clicking obtain details, it can be ROM or PCB
problem, stop operation and check if ROM or PCB is bad/mismatch.
• Firmware failure, if clicking and no complete info is shown, it can be some firmware
corruption, click OK to continue.
Choose where you would like to save the task and the firmware resources SRP is going to
read from drive, click OK.

Choose available COM port for COM operations.

Note: if your PC has more than one available COM ports, refer to My Computer-----
Properties---Device Management for the COM port that SRP uses.

Entering main interface.

Once you have entered the main interface, all operation and info will be in the Log/Journal.
Defects List shows all the defects the patient drive has.
In Hex, you can try to access LBA, Modules, RAM and ROM.

Modules List lits all the modules that you can backup, read and check, it is recommended
that users should backup all the modules when drive is accessible.
Double click any module to open its content in Hex window.
Green blocks mean the modules are good, any red cross one means it was checked error.
If drive is not access normally, try to replace bad modules using donors. Be careful with
corrupted defects modules, ask DFL support before you update them.

Firmware Operations
ATA Commands Soft Reset Hard Reset Stop Motor Start Motor
Control HDD power and reset drive, mainly used when drive is frozen or stuck.

Read Modules

Read any or all modules and save to your work directory. This operation is suggested before
starting to data recovery.

Write Modules
Update modules when they are corrupted.
NOTE: not all the modules can be updated, proceed with caution on defects modules,
consult DFL support before updating modules.

Read Tracks

Read firmware by tracks, try this when modules are not shown and cannot be read.
Write Tracks

Read ROM

Read ROM content and save to work directory.

ID Edit
Edit ID info if any parameters are not correct. Try this when LBA is not correct.

Read RAM

If any head is bad, you should depop the head
If the drive has too many bad sectors that can belong to a head, you should cut zone.
NOTE: This operation will damage data and is not for data recovery.

Get Zone Table

Similar to Depop/Cut Zone, it will list all the zones for you to depop or cut.

Techo is ON by default when you have loaded the drive. It will be OFF if you power off the drive
and power on again, then you will need to turn it on again manually.
