I have had in interest in medicine since I was very young. When I was one and a half, my
family got into a major, life-changing car accident. My mom ended up paralyzed from the waist
down and my dad caught me in mid-air and saved my life. This experience not only changed my
life, but caused me to want to go into the medical field and care for other people the same way
my mom was cared for in the hospital. During my high school experience, I have gotten many
opportunities to be a participant of many programs that have furthered my love for the medical
field and encouraged me to go into nursing. I have gained experience and I am continuing to gain
knowledge in the field, and I feel more academically prepared each day for college. I dream of
going to either North Carolina A&T or Prairie View A&M for college. I believe these Historical
During the summer of 2018, I applied and participated in Northbay’s four-day Nurse
Camp. This camp was my first real hands-on experience with nursing. I learned basic things like
suturing, how to do CPR, and drawing blood. I also got the opportunity to go to different areas of
the hospital and observe how nurses care for their patients. I fell in love with the post-partum
unit and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) unit. During my program, it felt amazing to be
around people who have the same interests and goals as me, and to have mentors that want
what’s best for me. I even made a pact with one of my mentors that after I complete nursing
school and get my Bachelors of Science in Nursing, I will come back and visit her.
One of my greatest accomplishments was completing and graduating from the Stanford
Medical Youth Science Program (SMYSP). SMYSP is a 5 week residential program for high
school students in the Bay Area that interested in medicine. Of the 400 applicants, only 30 were
accepted. While we were there we attended lecture halls led by health-care professionals,
anatomy lab lectures held at Stanford University, and internships at Stanford Health-Care. This
experience ultimately solidified my decision of going in the medical field. Of the many things we
did, my favorite was taking a university-level Anatomy and Physiology course. Along with
taking a lecture course of Anatomy and Physiology, we had the opportunity to go into the
university’s lab and work with real cadavers and prosections. At the very end of the program, we
had to put our knowledge to the test and take our final exam. I ended up passing my test and
getting an A in the class. Getting an A in the class at Stanford University inspired me,
encouraged me, and showed me that I am capable of doing big things. I will follow my passion,
make it through college, and become a nurse. With all this knowledge, I’m ready to take on the
world.
Along with my educational opportunities I’ve taken advantage of during my high school
experience, I’ve also taken personal steps to prepare myself for college. Apart from going to a
college-preparatory high school, I have taken the PSAT twice and am currently taking tutoring
for the SAT. I plan on visiting all the schools that I dream of going to with my Aunt to solidify
my decision of where I would like to attend college! Apart from that, I am also very involved in
my school. I am in the Student Council and I have been apart of many clubs. I have also had the
pleasure of starting a few clubs myself! My school doesn’t have a dance or cheer team, so this
year a few friends of mine and I created the Spirit Squad! For this club, we perform cheers and
dances at school events. Another club my friends and I created was the Black Student Union.
This club was made for the underrepresented African American population at our school. This
club was made to create a community, educate the student body, and bring everyone together.
gained new experiences and knowledge to help prepare me for college. I have also taken
personal steps to help me grow as a person. To reiterate, I plan on attending either North
Carolina A&T or Prairie View A&M University and pursuing a nursing degree there. I believe
that the steps I have taken so far will help me in college. Thank you.
