THEORY OF MACHINES MODEL PAPER ( 2010 )

I.(A) Sketch and describe the four bar chain 6

mechanism and one of its inversions.
In a crank and slotted lever quick return motion
mechanism, the distance between the fixed
centers O and C is 200mm. The driving crank
CP is 75mm long, the pin Q on the slotted lever,
360mm from the fulcrum O, is connected by
link QR 100mm long, to a pin R on the ram. The
line of stroke R is perpendicular to OC and
intersects OC produced at a point 150mm from
C. Determine the ratio of times taken on cutting
and return strokes.

(B). Explain Davis steering gear mechanism with 6

neat sketch and solve the following problem.
In a Davis steering gear ,the distance between
the pivots of the front axle is 1metre and the
wheel base is 2.5 metres. Find the inclination of
the track arm to the longitudinal axis of the car,
when it is moving along a straight path.

(c). Sketch and explain the working of two different 6
types of quick return mechanisms and derive
an expression for the ratio of times taken in
forward and return stroke for one of the
mechanisms.

(d). Sketch and explain Peaucellier mechanism with 6

neat sketch and solve the following problem.
Two shafts are connected by a Hooke’s joint,
the driving shaft revolves uniformly at 500rpm.
If the total permissible variation in speed of a
driven shaft is not to exceed 6% of the mean
speed, find the greatest permissible angle
between the center lines of the shaft. Also
determine the maximum and minimum speed
of the driven shaft.
II (A). The crank OA of a mechanism, as shown in 12
fig1, rotates clockwise at 120 rpm, the lengths
of various links are OA=100mm, AB=500mm,
AC=100mm and CD=750mm. Find by
instantaneous centre method: 1)Velocity of
point C. 2) Velocity of slider D and 3) Angular
velocities of the links AB and CD.
OR
(B) In the Mechanism as shown in fig2,the crank OA 12
rotates at 20 r.p.m anticlockwise and gives
motion to the sliding blocks B and D.The
dimensions of various links are OA=300mm,
AB=1200mm BC=450mm and CD=450mm. For
the configuration, determine 1)velocities of
sliding at B and D.
2)Angular velocity of CD, 3)Linear acceleration
of D, and
4) Angular acceleration of CD.

III (A) A Cam operating a knife edged follower has the 12

following data
(a) follower moves outward through 40mm
during 600 of cam rotation.(b) follower dwells
for the next450 (c)follower returns to its original
position during next 900 (d) follower dwells for
the rest of the rotation. The displacement of the
follower to take place with simple harmonic
motion during both the outward and return
strokes. The least radius of the cam is 50mm.
Draw the profile of the cam when , 1)the axis of
the follower passes through the cam axis and
2).the axis of the follower is offset 20mm
towards right from the cam axis. I f the cam
rotates at 300rpm,determine the maximum
velocity and acceleration of the follower during
the outward stroke and return stroke.

(B). A cam rotating clockwise with a uniform speed 12
is to give the roller follower of 20mm diameter
with the following motion:
(a). follower to move outwards through a
distance of 30mm during1200 of cam rotation,
(b) follower to dwell for 600 of cam rotation,(c).
follower to return to its initial position during
900 of cam rotation, and (d).follower to dwell for
the remaining 900 of cam rotation. The
minimum radius of the cam is 45mm and the
line of stroke of the follower is offset 15mmm
from the axis of the cam and the displacement
of the follower is to take place with SHM on
both the outward and return strokes. Draw the
cam profile.

velocity ratio of toothed wheels with neat
sketch. And solve the following problem.
A Pair of gears having 40 and 20 teeth
respectively, are rotating in mesh, the speed of
the smaller being 2000rpm. Determine the
velocity of sliding between the gear teeth faces
at the point of engagement ,at the pitch point,
and at the point of disengagement, if the
smaller gear is the driver. Assume that the gear
teeth are 200 in volute form, addendum length
is 5mm and the module is 5mm.Also find the
angle through which the pinion turns while any
pairs of teeth are in contact.

(B). Explain the concept of Reverted Gear train and 12
solve the following problem.
In an Epi-Cyclic gear train, the internal wheels A
and B and compound wheels C and D rotate
independently about the axis O. The wheels E
and F rotate on pins fixed to the arm G.
E gears with A and C and F gears with B and D.
All the wheels have the same module and the
number of teeth are :
TC=28, TD=26, TE= TF=18. !).Sketch the
arrangement .2).find the number of teeth on A
and B 3). If the arm G makes 100rpm clockwise
and A fixed find the speed of B. and 4). If the
arm G makes 100rpm clockwise and wheel A
makes 10 rpm counter clockwise, find the
speed of wheel B.
