WASHINGTON — President
Donald Trump couldn’t resist riffing
on the House impeachment inquiry
Tuesday as he continued the tradition
of pardoning a Thanksgiving turkey,
generating holiday-season laughter
at the expense of House Intelligence
Committee Chairman Rep. Adam
Schiff, one of his chief antagonists in
Congress.
Trump joked that the pair of North
Carolina-bred turkeys he was about
to pardon had been raised to “remain
calm under any condition,” a trait
that he said will be “very important
because they’ve already received
subpoenas to appear in Adam Schiff’s
basement on Thursday.”
“It seems the Democrats are ac-
cusing me of being too soft on tur-
key,” Trump told guests seated in the
White House Rose Garden, where he
was flanked by his wife, first lady Me-
lania Trump. But he told the turkeys
that, “unlike previous witnesses, you
and I have actually met. It’s very un-
usual.”
Trump’s Republican defenders in
Congress had criticized Schiff for
holding closed-depositions in a se-
cure room in the basement of the Cap-
itol Visitor Center, which Democrats
said was necessary for the investi-
gation. Trump has criticized the im-
peachment inquiry as both a “scam”
and a “hoax.”
Trump also has claimed to barely
know some of the witnesses — includ-
ing Gordon Sondland, Trump’s ambas-
sador to the European Union — who
testified during public impeachment
hearings chaired by Schiff, a Califor-
nia Democrat. Testimony from sever-
al officials showed that Sondland had
been in frequent contact with Trump

duct a performance
audit of district
spending. But it’s
likely the auditor’s
office will tell them Spears

The school district’s board of
trustees voted in a special-call
meeting last week to request the
performance audit and specifically
look at whether CMSD is dedicat-
ing enough money to the classroom
compared to spending on adminis-
tration. The auditor’s office issued
a report earlier this year that was
critical of public schools in Missis-
sippi for not spending enough of
their funds on students.
“There’s an ongoing dialogue
about how much money should be
going into the classroom, and one
thing we want them to look at is if
there are classifications they con-
sider to be outside of the classroom
that we (the district’s board) con-
sider to be money that is going to
students,” board president Jason
Spears told The Dispatch.
Spears said he feels CMSD is
operating efficiently, but he hopes
the performance audit might reveal
areas where spending priorities can
improve. It’s also another step in an
effort to be as transparent as possi-
ble with district business, he said.
“We’re not fearing a bad out-
come,” he said. “We’re just looking
for a true analysis of where we are.
… We know we’re doing a good job.
But if you’re going to do something
well, do it as well as you can.”
CMSD, just like all public bod-
ies in Mississippi, contracts with
a third party for an annual compli-
ance audit — which determines
whether its financial practices are
legal. Those audit reports are sub-
mitted to the State Auditor’s Office.
A performance audit, on the oth-
er hand, can be a voluntary process
that looks more at system efficien-
cies. District officials, including
board members and Superinten-
dent Cherie Labat, learned about
the process at a Mississippi School
Boards Association conference ear-
lier this month.

was 85.

10:30 a.m.
Bridges served on the
Court of Appeals for 11
years. He was elected in
1994, and the court began
hearing cases in January
1995.
Bridges served as
chief judge from Jan. 31,
1997, until Feb. 17, 1999.
He was named presiding
judge on April 30, 2004
and retired Dec. 31, 2005.
But, he didn’t hang up his
robe. He became a senior
status judge and presid-
ed over cases in the trial
courts for many more
years.
“Billy was a very thor-
ough and considered
individual in his work,”

Justice Leslie D. King
who served with bridges
on the appellate court.
“He took his time in look-
ing very carefully at the
matters before the court.
He cared a great deal
about his work and the
people who came before
the court. He was also
concerned about the judi-
ciary and the appearance
of the judiciary to the
public. Billy was a fine ex-
ample of what you would
want to see in a judge.
He is someone whom I’m
happy to have known as a
colleague and a friend.”

sitions including board
attorney for the Town of
Florence, the Town of
Pelahatchie, the Rankin
Medical Center, and the
Rankin County School
Board.

Jodi Jones Napier, age 82, of Columbus, MS,

Mrs. Napier was born November 13, 1937, in
Arthur, TN, to the late Zack and Jane Duncan
Jones. She was the third youngest of eleven chil-
dren who grew up on a tobacco farm in Arthur,
TN.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
death by all ten of her siblings, whom she men-
tioned often in her final months of life, and hus-
band, Ira Edgar Napier.
Mrs. Napier moved to Columbus with her fam-
ily in 1967. She loved her children equally, but
differently, and managed to attend their many
games, plays, piano recitals, and band concerts,
while working full time as purchasing agent at
Motion Industries. Her popcorn balls and orange
Kool-Aid were legendary and are still fondly re-
membered by her children and their friends. She
never said no when her children brought home
“just one more” pet, encouraging a love of ani-
mals in them. She and her husband, Ira Napier,
remained good friends with her first husband,
Joe Merritt, and often welcomed him as a guest
in their home until his death in 2006. She was a
loving and doting Grandma, who never tired of
spending time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Napier was blessed to have Cherri Ellis
as a loving and attentive roommate at Aurora
Health & Rehab. Another loyal friend was Linda
Jenkins, who brought special meals and made

Shifting drivers’ license
responsibilities to
another department isn’t
addressing the issue
Michael Watson’s signature campaign idea
of moving driver’s license services from the
Mississippi Department of Public Safety to the
Secretary of State’s Office should be shelved,
if not by him, then by the Legislature.
If there are problems with long wait times
for driver’s licenses, as has been reported,
then the solution is improving the staffing and
processes within the state agency logically
in charge of this responsibility, rather than
creating a new level of bureaucracy.
Watson, the newly elected secretary of
state, has other priorities, however, that are of
great merit and should be pursued.
He discussed some of those this past week
with the Clarion Ledger newspaper. Among
the good ideas:
- Scrapping the two-tier election process
to which he and other statewide officials are
subject.
Requiring a governor or other statewide
candidate to win both a majority of the popu-
lar vote and a majority of the state’s 122 House
districts had a pernicious intent when those
provisions were included in the 1890 constitu-
tion: to make it harder for black candidates to
win. MUSINGS
Wisteria
Today, it makes it harder for Democrats of
whatever color to win because of how gerry-
mandered the legislative districts are. Al-

though the governor’s race between Democrat
Jim Hood and Republican Tate Reeves ended
up not being close enough for the two-step
process to become an issue, Hood’s math pri-
or to the voting was illustrative of the unfair-
ness of the two-pronged system. He calculated
that he would have to win not just 50% plus one
of the popular vote, but 54% in order to also
win a majority of House districts.
Had he fallen somewhere in between, a Re-
publican-dominated House theoretically could
have awarded the governorship to a GOP
nominee who wasn’t even close to winning the
popular vote.
Maybe that will never happen, but Missis-
sippi should take the possibility completely off
the table.
- Eliminating the loophole that allows pol-
iticians to personally keep any surplus cam-
paign funds they raised before Jan. 1, 2018.
That provision was grandfathered in when the
Legislature, under public pressure, enacted in
2017 restrictions on candidates using cam-
paign funds for personal expenses.
Even though lawmakers were embarrassed
at the time of the legislation by revelations
over the food, clothing and apartment bills
they had covered with campaign funds, they
weren’t willing to make the reforms retroac-
tive.
Watson is absolutely correct when he says
they need to. No matter when the money was
raised, it stinks that a losing or retiring politi-
cian can pocket it.
- Requiring that campaign finance reports
be submitted in an easily searchable format.
Presently, the law still accepts paper docu-
mentation from candidates and their political
action committees on where they got their
money and how they spent it.
Although Delbert Hosemann, Watson’s
predecessor and Mississippi’s next lieutenant
governor, created a couple of years ago an on-
line portal for submitting the data, still many
candidates don’t use it.
As a result, it takes more time to try to
connect the dots on campaign donations than
it should.
If someone, for example, wants to see how
much money a special interest group was
giving to candidates during an election cycle,
the search would require skimming through
hundreds of pages of records to answer the
question. With electronic filing, it would take
a few keystrokes and probably just seconds.
Watson should have an ally in Hosemann
in getting that mandate enacted, and possibly
the other reforms, too.

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island —
It’s one of America’s leading sourc-
es for news about the government,
yet also among the least trusted.
Social media, a new poll finds, is
America’s political news paradox.
Julie Ferguson, an occupation-
al therapist in central Washington
state, remembers getting TV news
from just a handful of networks. “I
grew up watching Walter Cronkite,”
she said. Today, she sees more po-
litical news on social media than
anywhere else. She doesn’t trust it,
but worries many others do. “The
information they’re getting, who
knows where it’s coming from?”
The irony of where Americans
get their news about the govern-
ment, and what sources they rely
on to deliver news about the govern-
ment they can trust, was exposed in
a survey published this month by
The Associated Press-NORC Cen-
ter for Public Opinion Research and
USAFacts.
It found that 54 percent of Ameri-
cans say they get government-relat-
ed information from social media at
least once a day, compared with 52
percent who said they get informa-
tion about government daily from
local TV news, 50 percent from
national TV news, 47 percent from
cable news and 19 percent from na-
tionally circulated newspapers.
The poll also found that Ameri-
cans are significantly more likely to
say they get information from social
media repeatedly throughout the
day than to say the same about any
other news source.
Yet the survey found only 11 per-
cent of Americans say they trust
information about government they
see on social media a great deal or
quite a bit. Nearly two-thirds said
they have little to no trust in gov-
ernment news they find there. Of
all the potential places to find news
about the government included in
the survey, social media was the
least trusted.
“There’s definitely a bias to ev-
erything (on social media),” said
Gordon Schackelford, 70, of Fair-
field, Iowa. He said he became “cyn-
ical” about what he sees on social
media after learning Russia used
those online platforms to publish
false, misleading and divisive con-
tent in an effort to tamper with the
2016 U.S. election.
Schackelford said he has grown
weary of partisan posts on social
media sites such as Facebook and
Twitter, finding that on social me-
dia, it can feel like everyone from
politicians and family members to
journalists are pushing certain nar-
ratives or talking points — no mat-
ter the facts.
Yet, he admitted, he still checks
social media on a daily basis.
“It’s almost like an exercise: I
see my friends on Facebook will
make a post, half of them are going
to get supported, or half of them
are going to get ripped to death,”
Schackelford said.
While awareness about mis-
information on social media has
increased in recent years, many
people are still confused about how
they can get reliable news, said
Stephanie Edgerly, an associate
professor at Northwestern Univer-
sity who researches changing me-
dia landscapes.
“It’s really dangerous to make
people aware, concerned and afraid,
but not pair that with strategies to
engage,” Edgerly said. “What we’re
observing right now is that people
got the message that fake news,
disinformation exists online. What
we haven’t done a really good job
of getting the message out there is
where they can go for information
they can trust.”

is adding 14 statehouse re-
porters for 18-month jobs
through a collaboration
with Report for America,
a group dedicated to local
reporting.
Report for America is
part of a growing effort to
help local media. In rural
areas and even many cit-
ies, papers are shrinking
and shutting down while
coverage peters out. The
media group GroundTruth
Project, which supports
younger journalists glob-
ally, launched the initia-
tive in 2017.
Report for America re-
cruits reporters and pays
part of their salaries, put-
ting them to work at ex-
isting news organizations.
It has funded reporters at
newspapers, online publi-
cations, radio and TV out-
lets, and other news orga-
nizations such as the AP.
The initiative is one
of many designed to sup-
port local news. Other
efforts to fund local re-
porting have come from
journalism foundations;
tech companies like Goo-
gle, which has a part-
nership with newspaper
publisher McClatchy; and
media organizations like
the investigatory nonprof-
it website ProPublica.

STARKVILLE — For
Mississippi State offen-
sive tackle Tyre Phillips,
the Egg Bowl is every-
thing.
Phillips, a Grenada na-
tive, said his family never
went to the annual con-
test between MSU and in-
state rival Ole Miss due
to sky-high ticket prices.
But every year around
Thanksgiving, the bitter
rivals did battle on the
family’s television set.
“This is one of the
biggest weeks ever,” he
told The Dispatch. “To
be real — you could lose
every game but you’ve
got to win the Egg Bowl.
Growing up in Mississip-
pi that’s my perspective of
this week — it’s big.”

heading into Thursday’s
game against Ole Miss,
Phillips’ anecdote is just
one of many Bulldog play-
ers shared during Mon-
day night’s media session.
Freshman Nathan
Pickering, who has
carved out a starting role
on the interior of the Bull-
dog defensive line in re-
cent weeks, voiced simi-
lar sentiments to Phillips.
Born and raised in Mount
Olive, Pickering said he
watched the game annual-
ly while also attending as
a recruit. Thursday, he’ll
be on the field for his first
ever experience in the bit-
ter rivalry game.
“Even when I was be-
ing recruited I always
knew I was going here
and the one thing I want-
ed to do was play in the
Egg Bowl,” Pickering told
The Dispatch. “And now
that I’ve got a chance to
play I’m going to do my
best, I’m going to ball
out.”
And while the game
bears particular impor-
tance to those who were
born and bred in the
Magnolia State, their out
of state teammates have
also gained a further ap-
preciation for the divisive-
ness and competitive fire
that drives the game.

fore he ever coached his
first game at the helm of
the Noxubee County foot-
ball team.
Former head coach Ty-
rone Shorter, who led the
Tigers to four MHSAA
Class 4A state titles in
six years, left to coach at
Louisville. Shorter’s final
season produced a 7-6 re-
cord and a second-round
playoff exit. And after the
2018 season, Noxubee
County graduated a se-
nior class of 20 players,
and several others trans-
ferred schools. Decreased
enrollment dropped the
Tigers to Class 3A.
“When I first got the
job, a lot of people didn’t
believe in this team,”
Young said.
They’re believing now.
Noxubee County’s de-
fense, among the best in
Class 3A if not the best
outright, has carried it
within a win of the state
championship game af-
ter a middling 6-5 regu-
lar season. The Tigers
stomped on Coahoma
Agricultural 53-0 and
shut out Senatobia 21-0 on
the road in the first two
rounds of the playoffs.
And last Friday in Ma-
con, Noxubee County
outlasted Houston 14-12
in a grueling, muddy tri-
ple-overtime game. The
Hilltoppers punched in
a touchdown in the third
extra period, but the Ti-
gers stuffed the two-point
conversion and scored
eight points of their own
for the win.
“It just showed the
kids’ willpower, that
they don’t want to go

points for the Tigers
against Houston, rushing

“If we can run the ball
and keep from turning it

with the win,” Windham

“A lot of people doubt
these kids, but we’ve been
grinding since day one,

practice with his modern/
alternative rock band, “
Between the Heart,” he
grew more and more anx-
ious than for any kick of
his career.
“It’s funny to think
about, because I’ve been
kicking for so long and
I’m used to all eyes on
me,” said Koehnke, who
hit a 57-yarder against
Utah State on Oct. 26.
“But being part of a band
is something so new and
sure, it should be the
same as kicking. But the
thought of playing at a
gig, it makes me a little
more uneasy than kicking
a field goal.”
How this came to be:
Koehnke attended a kara-
oke night in nearby Colo-
rado Springs. Some of the
band members were on
stage performing Fall Out
Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Goin
Down,” which happened
to be one of Koehnke’s fa-
vorite songs as a kid.
After the performance,
Koehnke approached
them and said he was a
guitarist, too — should
they ever need one. A few
months later, Koehnke
posted some clips on so-
cial media and the group
reached out to him.
Turns out, their guitar-
ist was enlisting in the Air
Force.
“Ironic, right?” said
Koehnke, whose band in-
tends to play gigs in Colo-
rado Springs and Denver.
“I tried out and they said
I was good enough to be
part of the group.”
As for his upcoming
plans — after a bowl
game, obviously —
Koehnke hopes to be-
come an Air Force pilot.
Or maybe an NFL kicker,
especially with Defense
Secretary Mark Esper
issuing new guidelines
that paves the way for
athletes attending the na-
tion’s military academies
to seek waivers to play
professional sports upon
their graduation.
Down the road, possi-
bly even a music career.
“For right now, I’m just

Well, I can’t do any-
thing about your family
dynamics (if I could I
would start closer to
home). But I can share
tips and tricks I’ve picked
up over the years, along
with advice from some
other Thanksgiving Din-
ner pros.
Mashed potatoes
There are two basic
ways to make potatoes
for mashing.
1) Boil and then peel
them. Peeling potatoes
can be a drag (though if
you need a kitchen task
to give an eager family
member, this is a good
one). But if you boil your
potatoes whole in their
skins until tender (about
20 to 25 minutes), then
transfer them to an ice
bath (a big bowl of ice
water) and let them sit
for 20 to 30 seconds, the
skins will slide right off.
Then you can go right
ahead and mash them.
2) Bake your potatoes.

year and has been vegan since February
2019 “because of the wonders of how
that’s helped my health and my moth-
er’s health. This is a no brainer.”
Weight loss, improved mental clarity
and lower glucose numbers in the case
of her mother are a few of the benefits
Willis cites since making diet changes.
“My mom was getting ready to be
on the insulin track for her diabetes,”
she said. “We have now left that totally
aside. Now she controls it with pills and
her diet is under control. We are hoping
to eventually eradicate the pills alto-
gether.”
Willis, who moved to Mississippi
about three years ago from Illinois, has
been farming for a year in Crawford,
where she has extensive family roots.
She grows saffron, Canadian golden-
rod and collard greens, among other
crops. With the festival, she hopes to
bring more attention to the connection
between diet and health.
“We understand Mississippi is often
No. 1 in poverty, obesity and prevent-
able diseases,” she remarked. “As an
adult you almost have to get sick in
order to change some of your habits.”
Her hope is to reach children with the
healthy habits are ingrained.
“We want to take our babies back and
teach them about food early,” she said.
Festival proceeds will go toward
a KidzCafe program, where children
learn the importance of land, soil and
farming practices. Fruits and vegeta-
bles they grow are harvested for CSA
delivery or used to prepare meals for
community members with preventable
diseases.
“We know a big part of health is
having access to the right type of food,
the real food,” said Elliott of Jackson, a
former investment banker in New York
and CEO of Delta Enterprises. The na-
tive Mississippian returned to her home
state after 9/11.
“I came back to start planting seeds
for a new type of life,” she told The
Dispatch. “I gave up my high heels for
work boots, and I’ve never looked back.
For me, it was all about what I could do
to help make a difference in my back
yard, and my back yard is my state. I’m
excited to participate (in the festival), to
be a part of any activity that talks about
the health of our community.”

back in oven 3 minutes until liquid is reduced and syrupy. Vegetables should be well glazed when
finished.
