1-when taking over as a 2nd engr what all things u check
i told first we will follow ism familarisation check list and then regarding safety items
such as all iopp,iapp,sewage,oil record book etc check validity of above certificates
regarding maint will what is due and do we have necessary spare parts then cross ques that from which
document u will get critical spare parts list ans was safety management document finally he ticked

2-economiser tube leaking action to be taken
i started with stop engine keep circulating pump running open manhole door check which tube is leaking
then we have to plug it or we can use long stud and will put nut on both ends cross ques was suppose it
is circular in shape then tell me i was not getting his ques so he put ques mark
3-four stroke bolt why fatigue take place
i told him during comp and exh stroke bolt is under tension while during power stroke it is under
compression so cyclic reversal of stress takes place and bolt under go fatigue stress but cross ques wat at
what compressive force i had no clue about it
so again he put ques mark
4-paint scheme which company i did not know so again he asked surface prepration i
told we will do sand blasting or shot blasting or hydroblasting his cross ques was shot blasting how u do i
told him stell balls under high pressure bombarded on the surface then he asked like this there will be
dents on the surface he asked what standard i told sa2.5 again cross ques that how u do painting i told
by airless spray machine again cross ques working of it i had no idea
finally he told that 2,3,4 answers are not satisfactory go and find out
after 1 hour again i went i told airless spray machine has got electrically driven hyd pump which drives a
piston which sucks from paint container and thru hose and spray gun it is sprayed on the surface he told
it is not like this again i said sir there is one more procedure by compressed air which is drivem medium
which drives piston above which paint is there under comp it is sprayed on hull he said ok thats it

Trassi took some guys orals with dutta and then moved to Gadkar's place. 2 guys were missing. Then he
came and called " MAN " with a smile ( I guess he wanted to say even B & W) :-)
Anyway he looked in a good mood day today as many people cleared today.
He asked me to write down previous questions of his and from Mr. S.K. Aneja.
He then asked:
Two reasons -i) The VIT is maximum advanced at 85 % load, where max peak pr is reached and max
power can be developed.
ii) A graph of sfoc v/s % power shows sfoc reduces till 85 % and thereafter increases again.
later Gadkar called and said, " How was your exam? Good? "
I said- " Sir, very good". :-)
he then looked at me and said, " Very Good ?"
I thought better tone down the mood and said " sir, good".
he said ok, go you are passed.
So finally done with class II. now no, looking back at MMD for a very long time , except to collect my new
COC :-)

almosst from Dattar's quesns.

ans:CCR -18-20%-indicates difficulty to burn plus fouling nature of fuel.requires frequent cleaning of
T/C,EGB
CCAI-Calculated carbon aromacity Index 870-higher the value indicates fuel has long ignition delay.
ans: Breaking IN is first phase and is followed by running In ....Breaking In lasts for only 20-24
hrs(required for proper bedding of ring and liner...asperities to be broken & influences the cylinder
condition later .Runnin In has a 1800-2000 hrs period with increased cylinder lubrication dosage to abt
150-200% of basic rate and thn gradually reducing it.Running In achieves proper sealing of faces. for
breaking IN increase load to 55%MCR for atleast 2 hrs and then gradually to 100% MCR in next 20-24
hrs.keep cylinder lub to be above 150% during this time.This is as per MAN B&W 6 S60MC manual.

told him check camshaft timing by pin gauge…unit no1 at TDC marks on camshaft and one on housing
should match .limiting value given in manual corresponding to 2 deg timing misalignment....check it is
below that value.
2:Crankshaft deflection : looking at the table (values )wht conclusions? told him vertical n horizontal
misalignment.and also told hi m the checks on reading,..T+B=P+S.

Bannerjee was not in his place so the orals were taken by pakrasi and the results were declared by him .

1) First of all he asked me which n all engines I had done so I told him all MAN B&W MC’s so he frowned
, then I told him I have read about sulzer , that was myself hitting nail on my own coffin, so he asked me
what are the sulzer series , told him RD, RND , RND-M, RLA , RLB, then came the RTA . so he asked me
what and all are the differenced in RND AND RTA, told him what I had read from arhana . so ok .
2) You have got a new Thick shell white metal bearing onboard and now you need to check whether you
can use , or how will you ascertain that it conforms to your pin ??? I was like kya bolloo , k as in this
forum we had discussed about Prussian blue I told him we’ll carry out that test , but then he told that
would be for one half at a time what about the whole bearing as a unit, I could’nt think of an answer ,
but he gave me the answer “ you have to assemble the bearing into the conrod and tighten the conrod
bolts with out the pin and with inside micrometer you need to check the dimensions and compare it with
your pin dimensions , I was like “ arey yeh bhi ho sakta than a yaarrr “
My miseries did’nt end here he asked me ok let that be “ tell me how will you check whether the new
bearing has been bonded well with the steel backing or is it sub standard “ yeh kya tha I did’nt know the
answer to this. So gone second question was a mess.
3) Then he asked me how frequently are the thrust bearing survey carried out. And from there he went
on to the thrust bearing wear measurement and clearance mess up here also ….
4) Then what type of safety valve onboard your ship ? said full lift and asked me to draw
Well I had’nt done well I mess up but I guess , he was in a mood to pass the single function people.
Thanks to him , I PASSED , done with class 2 people , this group helps a lot , so help the group to help

whether i knew them nw...and asked me abt rta fuel p/p timing.....tried to confuse a lot....wasn`t

2. wat sort of engines u hav worked on told him both man smcs....asked me wat sort of tierods....told
him long...asked me the diff & diagram....asked me abt short tierods...hw r they screwed....wat type is
the female thread & hw deep is it....asked me to find it out...
3.draw a stuffing box...hw many sealin & scrapper rings....material of each....hw will u overhaul in
place...wat will check on the lamellas...hw r the lamellas attached to the scrapper rings(dint knew the
answer...askd me to find it out...fyi..its a slide fit)....wat happens if the butt clearance increases....
4.wat r the stresses tht act on a 4 stroke conrod bolt...drew the gas force-inertia force diagram...xplained

respect to safety & critical equipments...went on and on...he dint look satisfied...hav u seen an ism
manual...i said yes...he said thts the first thing u`ll chk....hw will u knw it is reviewed.....i said it has to b
signed & reviewed by master periodically....so is there a review sheet...i guessd yes....instant reply...toh

metallurgist..;)...or during tempering process if the metal is allowed to cool instantly....& it is repaired at
a temp of 800-850 deg with low hydrogen electrodes...

dattar told me at the beginning as both the functions are closely related he just ask
the questions randomly and he'll put it on paper accordingly . ok
so he started out by asking what are all the engines i've worked on told him LMC
and SMC , so then he asked me any idea about sulzer told him i've read about it...
so here are the questions which i can remember guys , with the answers given to
some extent
1. What is running in , in 2s and 4s engines, how different is it? Told him about
running in and how in 4s running in not for the piston ring and liner , and is for
running gear but he frowned don’t know why …..
2. Whats the difference between thick shell bearing and thin shell bearing??? told
him what ever I’ve found in the earlier posts …
3. Then about crosshead bearing lubrication in MAN B&W and SULZER difference
and how is the entry of lube oil in both ??? told him about the difference in design
and the pressure , but i was not sure about the point of entry .
4. Then came the bouncer , he asked me “now a days the holding down bolts are
longer than the once which were used previously , whats the reason for this change
“ ?? did’nt know ???
5. What is liner glazing ??? I was going well with the organic and the inorganic
mixture of the lacquer and the micropores but I don’t know for some reasons I did a
mistake of mentioning the micro seizures and there he caught me on my hips …..
6. Then came the chain tightening stuff, he asked me what would you after you
have tightened the chain ??? told him as after the tightening process the cam
timing would have got altered and we’ll check it with a pin gauge and do the
adjustment n then he asked me “ so you go about changing the timing everytime
you tighten the chain , so told him we’ll just check as the allowable limit is 2 deg we
need’nt do it.
7. Then is asked me about the ceramic coating on the piston rings , I firstly did’nt
get what he wanted , so I told him its generally meant to increase time between
overhauls as the ring wear rate is more in 2-stroke engines , here again I dwelled in
, asked what about wear rate in 4-stroke engines i told him the wear rate in 4s is
less than the liner wear rate , n then he asked me why , told him about the mean
piston speed this time I think I did’nt pay much heed to MPS but then there is more
to it in later questions . 4-s engine ring coating , told him ceramic, there was a slight
swivel in his sitting position . just hoped I was right…
8. Have you heard about something called “bearing monitoring system” introduced
by MAN B&W , have you hear about it ??? I had no idea about this ..
9. Then he asked me about the tribopack ??? this one was common so knew it , in
this he asked me about the mid level insulation told him about the dew point and
acid corrosion ….
10. Then boiler burner safeties did’nt tell him all of them ???
11. Then asked me about ignition lag , more in which 4s or 2s ??? told him 4-s its
more , asked me why , told him as the scavenge efficiency is lesser this problem
would be there , then he got interested in this , and asked me again to explain n
here he caught me on MPS , as I told him due to higher MPS the scavenge efficiency
lesser then he asked me ok whats the MPS of 4-s engine I told him I don’t know in
specific but then I told him if I assumed for a 720 rpm and stroke of .7m and
calculated 15.8 m/s , on this his reaction was confusing, any ways he came back to
the main question what are the measures to avoid this lag in recent 4-s engines , I
didn’t know this I told him we would advance the timing by adjusting the shims or
nut provided on some engines , then he told would you do this everytime your fuel
changes , then I had no clue , but since he was so free , I just blabbered VIT out of
know were then tho which engines have you seen n all any ways forget that
12. Then he asked me about the pressure setting of crankcase relief valves ??? told
him its around 40 -60 mbar as I had read it some were in the common notes …
13. Boiler safety valve setting how is it done and the setting pressure ??? known
question…..

Praveen Patil guys dattar is a genuine guy , but i very specific about motor , got function 6 from him but 4b he asked me
to repeat . this was slight disappointing but anyways it was dattar that why i didn't crib much may be i may i've gone wrong
anyways guys keep posting , as this is a life line

Kamble Mayur sale jo maine pucha tha wohi usne pucha ok congrats for function 6 regaurdung holding down bollts they
can bend at larger angle as there length is large same basic bending formula m/i=sigma/y=e/r
Vishal Tarde answer to longer holding down bolts is tht boz of greater lenght they have greater elasticity & therefore less
prone to cracking
Mahesh Vvsn Tadi effect of long holding down bolts as given in Griffith: if there is any relative movement between
bedplate & tanktop, the studs will bend & subsequently fail due to fatigue. In oreder to reduce this long studs wth distance

Deepak Shori clearance is checked between pintle sleeve and bearing by feeler g/g. Material of pintle sleeve stainless
steel. thordon bearingis of thermosetting 3-d crosslinked synthetic material.pintle clearance 1-2 mm told him formula as
given in saif tole but he asked abt some graph i dont know about that

cage if i am not mistaken. i wan moreover wondering abt the thordon bearings that u mentioned.

mistake of not knowing this. Its very easily available online to get details of ur engines n everything of
the ship. DO NOT NEGLET. Starts with a good impression.
2. Then last ship VLCC – fire protection system and capcity of system – told him low exp foam for deck
12:1 and high expansion foam in E/R 600:1 (from e-manuall that i had) n hypermist as supplementary
syatem n the the various types of portable extinguishers. Cross question on hypermist. – full system dia
with all valves and safeties. – got it right as i had tested it onbard. – no of nozzles for m/e and diagram
of the nozzle arrangement. - nailed it n got a tick.
3. Suddenly jumped to electricity and asked wht precautions we will take if a person in e.r gets a shock n
faints – Guys he wants simple first aid and most important we have to mention that the root cause
analysis for the incident and reporting it to other vessels. – got a dot.
4. MSB safeties – nailed it.
5. Navigational lighting alarm panel arrangement and vessel NUC lights arrangement and why like that
only – told him as per colregs and two red lights on the Signal mast 2 meters apart. – tick mil gaya

7. Solas chapter IX – everything i know about ISM – all 16 chapters names – i had byhearted so it was a
breeze, cross question about amendments to Emgc’y preparedness – Marine contingency plan and Emgcy

testing and then about emgcy generator testing and all regulations regarding starting only. – got tick.
8. Hydraulic steering gear 4-ram system draw with all safeties. Cross questioning as to why this v/v is
here n not there , wht happens if two diff grades of oil are mixed by mistake. How to detect etc – dot.
9. Regulations for steering gear wrt to chapter V of solas –told him all about regulation 26- got tick.
10. Nox criteria and tier II application – got tick
11. How grounding drill is taking place on the ship as per ISM – told him something but cld see that he
was happy– told him from start about who is incharge and who will do what n remembered some points
from the bridge checklist also about their actions so he got happy. But wanted more n more n dats all he
was saying.. more.. – got a dot.
12. Boiler water testing onboard , too much cross questin , but told him everything as i had read for
written exams , limiting values for my last engine and interval of shore analysis for boiler water, checks
on boiler burner and safeties. – got tick.
13. A/e l.o cooler leaking – this much we know then how to test the shell n tube type cooler if it is sea
water cooled – gave him a practical approach n got a tick.
14. M/E sulzer RTA water cooled piston pressure testing – totally blank but told him abt water entering
from palm n the same way as oil passes , testing at 7 bar using a told dat applies pressure to inlet bore
of piston rod n bolts go inside the outlet bores. – got tick ( unexpected)
15. Reefer gas charging and diagram of a two room reefer system – got tick
16. Main air compressor type and diagram of suction valve for second stage – drew t correctly. Then
asked me about reasons for second stage relief v/v lifting – told him high temp of air leading to higher
pressure implies poor efficiency of after cooler , also v/v leading from MAC to air bottle close by
someone, overhauled recently the relief v/v n not done setting correctly then he asked more , i told i cant
think of anything else – got dot does anyone know any other reason then please let me know.
17. Draw and show Rudder construction and how to construction from start and methods of connection
and too much cross questioning abt rudder drop , type for surface protection , welding method , draw
rudder of previous vessel , why balanced type , jumping clearance , pintle clearance , other types of
rudders and where they are used , what about passenger ships ( i had no clue abt passenger vessels )
etc
That was it..and he told me to asses myself. – i said i did well but there is always room for improvement.
He said ok got out and wait n so i did. I got lucky as the questions were not bouncers like other
surveyors.
Result declared by internal – said orlas was good but we cant give you all the four functions so you take
1st three n the last one MEP u give again.
3 out of four cleared guys n i ran from there as soon as i cld. Thanks to everyone on this group we come

of belt drive...i said if the compressor gets overloaded then it will slip and also belt
drive gives us the flexibilty of positioning the motor in case of slight misalignment

2. out at open sea how will u repair step by step ur bursting disc of ur MAC?
A) i said we can start the stand by compressor
isolate the compressor to work on
drain water from ur intercooler
take out ur tube stack
check ur tubes by conducting a leak test
and replace ur bursting disc with an ORIGINAL SPARE
now here he asked how does ur tube stack look from the top and asked for a
drawing of where the coolers are placed
(wanted a top view) and all diagram...his major qustion was whether the front end
of the disc stack is of the same dia as the rear side and i said yes very
confidently...he still didn agreee..he told me not to bull shit...anyways continuing
with the question he asked how do u detect a leak and i said to turn the disc stackj
upside down and fill it up with water and whichever is leaking will lose water...but
he just was not satisfied...god knows what he wanted...
i said engine will slowdown automatically and then we will call bridge directly and
tell them to stop engines and tell everyone vacate the engine room...don have to
specify anything else at all...he seemed satisfied...
keep posting witht the answers guys...it really helps cause most of the answers are
surveyor specific and u have to put down what he accepted so it helps the

he told to explain ME-B engine explained him then he said so ME-B is before ME as it has camshaft i said
no sir its ulta then gave a smile n told me to explain and draw how an exhuast valve operate in ME
engine explaine and drew simple drawing.
2. what is done to prevent corrosion in boilers??
I said we add oxygen scavenger or oxygen inhibitors he said bas itna hi
i said sir the entire water system is closed loop system so v prevent oxygen from coming inside the
system he said to draw the entire system and asked what abt cascade tank i said its closed then smiled
and what about your ship was it closed i said yes and smiled too... then drew the line diagram of feed
water system made a lil mistake there..
3.explain refrigeration cycle??
i started explaining then he interrupted n said let me complete the question explain refrigeration cycle on
p-s(pressure entropy) chart i tried explaining entropy he said draw it i said sorry sir

check voltage he asked me what is the voltage i said 1.85V he said do u know there onj ships there are
all 24volt batteries i said then how can u say 1.85V i got confused n said i dont know later (after orals)
realised 1.85V is voltage of 1 cell like that there are 12 cells so 24 volts
4.Draw and explain alternator with any excitation system
drew he said forget it i dont want explanation!!!

1. Is there a requirement to paint the ship? Is there any regulation that states this. Went onto paint
schemes. What is the 3rd coat on the paints used on deck. He didn't accept the glass finish one...said it's
very expensive. What are Self polishing paints? Told him that they are Silicon based and about honey
comb structure....He asked me what is put inside the honey comb? I said I have no idea.
2. Asked me material of bearing for stern tube and asked what all types of seal are u aware of. Then
asked me about the lip seal have horizontal contact with water. Tell me a seal which has vertical contact.
Said these are used on smaller ships that sail on shallow waters.
3. Tell me have u heard the term IACS. Told him around 11 members including IRS. What is condition of
class. Whats the name of the certificate that the class issues that is required for Insurance Purposes.
He said that ur 50 % there. I said sir I think I have given u 60% of the answers and if u give me
sometime i will find out the answers. I went out and found as much as I could in 45 mins.

overflow into the o'flow tanks and all securing and all....he said u should have said that no one will be given any jobs to do cause it's bad weather
and its dangerous so i asked him that as far as 5th engr is concerened these are the things that i would tell him...but he said no ..this also u should
tell ...as a 2nd engr ur job is mainly MAN MANAGEMENT and thats what we are looking for these orals....
i told him that we will take out the plug and see if water is coming out that means its breached...and he said u should mention SEAWATER and
not just water...didn know what to say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6. SMC piston draw and explain the flow of oil in it and how to pressure test and what are all the checks u will do on overhauling it?
everything right...except..i said we will test it with 7 bar water by pumping it from underneath instead of AIR....and the template we put on the
crown to check the burnout...the clearance is measured at the periphery...please check the manuals...i said after placing it on the crouwn the gap
that is shown in the center we can put a feeler gauge and check it....this he said is defr wrong...so guys please take care...

Q:why centrifugal pumps cannot handle air?-this quest was asked by him in my first attempt
---ans--i explained it with the help of p/p characteristics
ie the curve shows the head and the capacity of the p/p---but this characteristic remains same for any
fluid the pump is provided with.but actual head creeated for any other fluid which that particular pump
has to handle has to be calculated first.
eg--the pump is desiged for fresh water--lets say the max head is 100 mtrs but now if i want to pump oil
of sp frav 0.8 then the heal(meters liquid column will be---100x0.8 ie 80 mtrs and this can be converted
to pressure generated 80/10.2 bar
but if now the same pump has to handle air with spec gravity 0.00012 then the head created is
100x0.00012 which is too less this is why the air cannot be pumped.
That's all ...i thought i will get electrical..but nothing ..reapeat all..

this self synchronous motor?? and how is this different from a normal synchronous motor?? which i told

Savio Braganza vikram the smc cross section i drew frm the one i saw on aranha pg 272 but a much much simpler one he
doesnt want very intricate details.
Savio Braganza ujjwal sahu: reefer comp oil .should hav high flash point,non reactive with refrigerant,easily seperable
from refrigerant,should not react with the seal material,the pour piont lower thanmin temp of operating cycle.
Man Mohan As far as I understand it, safematic is other word for single failure concept.
