It was a dark June evening, I was half way through a novel on the Great War when suddenly I hear a scream. I ran up the stairs
to see what was causing all the commotion.
I opened the door to the master bedroom and found my mother collapsed on the floor. “Don’t’ just stand there kid, call and
ambulance”, she screamed. Hands shaking I dialed 911.
Once a car was on it’s way, I asked her what was the matter.
“I feel like I can hardly move and my heart is pounding. It’s just like when I met your father, only painful!”
“Mom”
I replied earnestly,
But before she could say another word, she slipped out of consciousness.
The hospital room was a bleak shade of yellow and the only modern furniture was my mother’s hospital bed. I was seated on a
disheveled wooden stool by her bedside, weeping. She slapped me,
“Don’t go soft on me now kid. I might need a blood transfusion from ya or something.”
The doctor walked in wearing a full suit beneath his lab coat.
He said
“The good news is that it’s not as bad as we thought, the bad news is that you’ll need to be monitored for the rest of your life,
but there’s more good news which is that the monitoring system is built into your Apple Watch.”
I replied
“Atrial whosamawhatsits?”
Said my mom
“Well atrial fibrillation is when the heart beats irregularly due to an issue with your body’s electrical system. In your mom’s case
there was an electrolyte imbalance. Do you do anything that may put you at risk for something like that?”
Said my mom.
“C’mom mom”
I said
“Mom, you drink a case a day, that stuff is made for athletes!’
I said.
“And athletes are one of the healthiest populations in America, right below vegans and Mormons!”
“Excuse me!”
“I know tensions are high but if you can avoid fighting that will reduce the risk of another episode. Now first of all, Susan you’re
going to need to reduce your Gatorade intake as sports drinks are high in electrolytes and that was likely the cause of your
condition.”
“Alright, I’m calm. Now tell me, how can my Apple Watch help me?”
Said my mother.
“Well, when you came in today I had to check your pulse and feel that you were having an Afib episode. Luckily, due to some
recent advances in neural networks, your watch can constantly monitor you and alert you the moment an episode begins,
before you even feel the symptoms. Studies have shown that the system is 95% effective, likely because the neural networks
that the system is based on were trained on a data set of millions of people.”
I said, sarcastically
“In fact it seems like Apple might be doing with healthcare what it previously did with music. In the past both music and
healthcare were expensive and difficult to access, but music has become accessible from everybody’s phones and soon highly
advanced healthcare will be too!”
“Wow”
I exclaimed.
“I need to go”
I turned to my mother and hugged her for the first time since dad died.
