Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: understand the need and technological impact of digital manufacturing on the current
manufacturing industry.

CO2 :: apply mathematical elements of geometric modeling and for digital manufacturing.

CO3 :: identify the working of various digital manufacturing processes.

CO4 :: analyze design and prepare data for digital manufacturing.

CO5 :: understand the selection of appropriate material for manufacturing and review its
economic aspects.

Introduction to Digital Manufacturing : Need of digital manufacturing, Digital manufacturing vs.
conventional manufacturing, Distinction between digital manufacturing and CNC machining, From
prototyping to manufacturing, Generalized digital manufacturing process chain, Benefits and
limitations of digital manufacturing, Application areas of digital manufacturing, role of digital
manufacturing in industry 4.0
Unit II
Geometric representations and data acquisition for digital manufacturing : Role of digital
geometric model in manufacturing, Solid representations of geometric model, Constructive solid
geometry (CSG) approach of solid modeling, Boundary representation of solid modeling,
Decomposition methods for solid modeling:, (Octree based modeling, voxel based modeling), Boolean
operations, Geometric data acquisition systems:, contact and non-contact type systems, 3D
reconstructions
Unit III
Digital manufacturing Processes : Classification of processes, Powder bed fusion processes,
Photopolymerization processes, Extrusion based processes, Sheet lamination process, Beam
deposition processes, Direct write technologies, Direct rapid tooling processes, CNC technologies:,
(Milling, Lathe), Proper selection of process
Unit IV
Design for digital manufacturing : Design for manufacturing and assembly concepts and
objectives, Exploring design freedom, Orientation of Geometric model, removal of support, hollowing
of parts and inclusion of undercuts, Interlocking features, reducing part count in an assembly
Unit V
Data preparation for digital manufacturing : Pre-processing of geometric model, STL conversion,
STL error diagnostic, Algorithms for STL correction, support generation, Slicing and tool path
generation:, (Generation of G & M code), AMF format, Direct slicing of CAD model
Unit VI
Material systems and Cost estimation models for digital manufacturing : Liquid polymer
systems, Discrete particle systems, Molten material systems, Solid sheet systems, Production
planning and control, Cost model, Build time model, Life cycle costing, Industrial and biomedical
applications of digital manufacturing
