SELECTING
the RIGHT ROD WORDS BY STEVE FENNELL

S DESIGNS IN LURES, BAITS, TECH-

A NIQUES, AND REELS HAVE EVOLVED

over the decades, so have rods
as they incorporate advanced
materials and much engineering to provide
you with an advantage over fish. The ‘right
rod’ allows you to cast more accurately, work
your bait better, identify more strikes and
even set the hook effectively to land your
catch.
Choosing the right rod begins with
determining the species of fish you want to
fish for. This helps you decide which tech-
nique you’ll be using and determines the
type of rod and action you want.
The two most popular styles are spin-
ning and baitcast rods and both are very
different. As spinning rods mount the reel
under the handle, baitcast rods seat the reel
on top. Each rod affords different casting
techniques, which in turn, determines your
reel, and evidently, your final selection. Most
anglers start out with a 6’6” to 7’ medium
rod as they can be used with many tech-
niques, lures and bait types.
The are many comprises with fishing
rods. You can use one that will never break
yet it’s weight would be too heavy to cast
with all day. Plus, heavier, stiffer rods are not
sensitive enough to inform you that you have
a bite. The type of rod you should consider is
one that’s strong and responsive, and sensi-
tive yet durable. While a great rod won’t
instantly make you a great angler, a poor
one will certainly limit your experiences and
perhaps cause enough frustration to quit
fishing altogether.
A great start would be to attend an
annual fishing show or your local retailer
and speak with the experts about the type
of fishing you do and the type fish you are
after. They can also inform about the type of
techniques that can be used with a particular
rod and advantages and disadvantages of Action will bend much lower and more easily than

action. This helps in setting the hook, as the
rod stops flexing quickly as it reaches the
stiffer part of the blank sooner. They work
best where short to medium casting dis-
tances are involved, using single hooks and
jig fishing.
For longer casts, medium to medium-
fast rods are used in conjunction with treble
hooks like topwater lures, crankbaits, or
spinner baits. The slower action makes it
less likely that you’ll tear the hook out of that
stronger fish you’re after.

Power – describes the strength of the rod

and its lifting power that's, rated from extra-
heavy to ultra-light. Describing the power
of a rod depends on the type of rod you’re
discussing. A heavy bass rod might be lim-
ited to a 25 lb line while a heavy offshore rod
might be rated for 80 lb line. And as you may
have already guessed, the line weight should
match the rod power. With a heavy line on
a light rod you could snap the rod, and with
a light line on a heavy power rod you could
snap the line. Matching the rod and line well
help you to work within the limits of the
equipment to land your prize.

Responsiveness – is the rods ability to flex

under load and then release the stored
energy. A light, highly responsive rod will
allow you to more accurately cast on a low the more brittle it becomes. In some cases to a minimum. Some of the best guides

MINN KOTA/JOHNSON OUTDOORS BUILT-IN MEGA DOWN IMAGING

No longer do you have to mount a separate transducer on your trolling motor to get the benefits of
Down Imaging (DI) technology as Minn Kota and Humminbird have partnered to offer the Built-In
MEGA Down Imaging system for select models in the Minn Kota product line. Winner of the Best of
Category – Boating Accessories at 2018 ICAST, the system is available for the new Ulterra, Terrova,
Ultrex or Fortrex models and is housed in the lower unit to deliver ultra-clear imaging of what’s below
the surface at the bow of your boat. Reliability is provided by a tough, exterior housing while all wiring
runs through a composite shaft (the Ulterra, Terrova and Ultrex models only)* to further resist against
wear and tear. According to Minn Kota, this is the first down imaging technology to enter the mega-
hertz range and is nearly three times greater than traditional 455 kHz frequencies, thus providing
clear, sharp on-screen images. All trolling motors with the Built-In MEGA Down Imaging system are
also part of the One-Boat network complete with Bluetooth, allowing you to control the trolling motor
from a Minn Kota app (and make software updates wirelessly), as well as the i-Pilot Link to control your
trolling motor from a Humminbird unit (except the Fortex). The trolling motors are compatible with the
Humminbird SOLIX, second generation HELIX, and ONIX models.

LOWRANCE HDS NOS 18.1 SOFTWARE
For 2019, Lowrance announced updated software for its HDS Carbon, HDS Gen3
and Elite-Ti displays to improve readability, functionality and overall convenience on
the water. The updates start with FishReveal, which offers real-time CHIRP sonar and
DownScan Imaging to view fish orienting themselves around structure (with clearly
defined fish arches) and observe photo-like images of the bottom. Further, you’ll like the
benefits of the High-Visibility Color Sonar system that includes SideScan, DownScan
Imaging and StructureScan 3D that now produce richer images below each side –
and directly below – your boat. It even automatically enhances brightness in darker
areas, while simultaneously preventing overexposure in brighter conditions. When it
comes to navigation, the C-MAP Easy Routing and Navionics Dock-to-Dock Autorouting
is now faster, more simplified and even safer as it automatically plots the shortest
course based on the boat’s draft, beam or height, and creates a route around a land-
mass, shoals or other fixed hazards. You’ll also appreciate the upgrades to the C-MAP
Navigation Palette C-MAP charts that now make it clearer to see where your boat is in
relation to channels, navaids, drop-offs or points of land.
MSRP: No cost (three updates are available per year – be sure to check compat-
ibility). www.lowrance.com

will come across long cast spools that are
mainly for (but not limited to) inshore or
offshore or surf fishing in saltwater. The
main difference between a long cast spool
and a traditional-sized spool is the former
has a shallower spool design and is more
elongated that’s said to reduce even more
friction, allowing you to cast further.
Another style of spool includes
deep, V-shaped or skirted spools that are
designed to take longer or heavier line,
while shallow spools are easier to cast
because the line comes off more easily.

Gear Ratio
The spool on a spinning reel is fixed and
the bail rotates around the spool, winding
your line on to the reel. The gear ratio
represents the number of times the bail
spins around the spool with one turn of
the handle. For instance, a 6:1 ratio or
higher is considered fast while 4:1 is slow.
The type of gear ratio that you need all
depends on the fish you like to catch and
the bait you’re using.

Line Retrieval Rate

The retrieval rate (or recovery rate) deter-
mines how much line is wound on the
spool with each turn of the handle. In this
gear guide it’s shown as IPT (or inches
per turn) and always remember that the
retrieval rate will change from reel to reel
due to the size of the spool and the size
of handle even if they have the same gear
ratio.

line, which make them ideal to cast larger
baits for more aggressive species such as
pike, muskie, steelhead and salmon.

Why Choose a Baitcaster?

Low profile baitcaster reels are the more
popular style. They are designed to make
the reel more comfortable (than traditional
round designs) and are easier to palm the
reel, which is a way of holding a baitcaster.
You can then put the side plate in the palm
of your hand with the trigger of the rod in
between your middle and ring finger and
reel with the other hand. They are also
available in both right- and left-handed
configurations.
One of the main reasons why baitcasters
are so popular is you can easily stop the line
mid-cast to precisely place your bait to (or
very near) specific obstructions and structure.
While it can’t cast as far as a spinning reel
with lighter bait, it can handle heavier line
and bait easier and more effectively.
When you first use a baitcaster, it’s
important to remember to use a heavier

G SAGE SPEY

concave, large arbor. The reel also comes with full line guards to ensure
thinner lines don’t migrate between the spool and frame during casting.
Additionally, the Spey features Sage’s Sealed Carbon System (SCS) drag,
complete with a machined, anodized One Revolution Drag Knob and num-
bered settings. Two main models are available in 6/7/8 ad 7/8/9 sizes that

H SEIGLER MF (MEDIUM FLY) LEVER DRAG FLY REEL
Designed primarily for saltwater fishing, the Seigler MF (Medium Fly) Lever
Drag Fly Reel was honoured with the Best of Category – Fly Reel award
at 2018 ICAST and features the company’s unique Lever Drag design.
According to Seigler, this allows you to conveniently predetermine the
maximum drag setting, eliminating the need to switch hands to adjust
pressure for the best possible control when a fish starts to run. It also offers
a piece of mind as you know what setting the drag is at all times and even
maintains the desired setting after a fish is landed. The Lever Drag Fly Reel
is fully machined for maximum durability and another notable feature is
the asymmetrical spool, which greatly reduces bearing friction, stress and
torque as it practically eliminates the reel from rotating during fights. It also
incorporates a “dovetail” joint system that slides into the socket of reel’s
main body to ensure stability. The MF (Medium Fly) Lever Drag Fly Reel
H has a weight of 10.6 oz and a line capacity of 300 yds (40# Braid w/9wt WF
