Physiologic Status-Neurologic System

• Most neurologic functions are primitive reflexes


• The autonomic nervous system play important roles during transiti
ons period because its stimulates respiration, maintain acid bala
nce, and partially regulates body temperature
• Myelination of the nervous system follows the ‘Cephalocaudal-proxi
modistal’ (head-to-toe-center-to periphery)
• Tract that develop earliest are sensory, cerebellar, and extrapyram
idal (sense of taste, smell, hearing, and the perception of pain)

Physiologic Status-Sensory Functions

Vision
Eyes ability to accommodate and fixate on an object are limited
Hearing
the hearing function have the same ability of adult. Newborn react to loud
sound with ‘Moro’ reflex (startle)
Smell
Newborn react with strong odor. Infants can differentiate their mother scent
Taste
Newborn able to distinguish tastes and react with facial reflexes
Touch
Newborn perceives tactile sensation in any body part especially face, hand,
and soles
