CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Bachelor of Business Administration program of Tribhuvan University includes the

mixture of theoretical as well as practical knowledge. It includes various subjects with
project works, internship program, studying organization and many more. This
program is designed to develop socially responsive, creative, and result oriented
management professionals to fill up the middle level managerial positions in the rapidly
growing business sector worldwide. The main objectives of this program are:

 Prepare students to take-up middle level managerial positions in the business

sector.
 Develop students’ skill in object-oriented business management capable of
understanding and solving practical business problems creatively.
 Provide professional management education with a blend of computer and
management information system courses.

Under the course of Tribhuvan University, the students of Bachelor of Business

Administration have to perform internship program for eight weeks in any organization
(financial, manufacturing, trading or service related) recommended by the college or
selected by the students themselves. The major reason for this program is to give
knowledge to the students about the practices in the real world .Every graduate may not
have his or her work experience, which is the major problem for mainly the fresh
graduates. In such a situation, internship program organized by different universities of
Nepal is praiseworthy. There was a time when internship was meant only for the
medical students. But the time has changed and even the management students go for
their internship. This is a very good effort since theoretical knowledge should go hand in
hand with the practical knowledge. The internship program gives the students an

1
opportunity to gain real life experience by working in an organization as a trainee.
Though the internship has been for the partial fulfillment of the requirements for the
degree of Bachelor of Business Administration, we, the students are able to learn a lot of
things during our stay in the organization as an intern. Moreover that, so gained
knowledge helps us when we are appointed as the employees in organizations in future.
So internship is such a program which provides experience to the students which is the
main requirement of almost all organizations at present.

I got the opportunity to do internship in Batas Organization which started from June
15th to August 12th 2018.I got an opportunity to learn related to sales, marketing ,
dealing with customers and customer tracking enquiry. Being a student from marketing
field and Mahindra automobiles being a trading business, it was very much delightful
experience.

1.2 Objectives of the Study

The Batas organization is a prominent business organization that delivers the various
marketing activities. It sales various automobiles including the products of Mahindra
brand, Suzuki brand,TVS brand and others. Thus the key objectives are as follows:

 To analyze the overall sales of the Mahindra automobile of the organization.

 To analyze the activities of sales and marketing department.
 To study about the provision related to the cash and financing facility during
purchasing of automobiles.

1.3 Significance of the Study

Every study comprises of both merits as well as demerits. This study plays an inevitable
role in getting important knowledge in the field of business and management to the
students of management.

1.4 Methodology

Research is common parlance refers to a search for knowledge. Once can also define
research as a scientific and systematic search for pertinent information on a specific topic.

2
In fact research is an art of science investigation. The advances learners’ dictionary of
current English lays down the meaning of research as “a careful investigation or inquiry
through search for new facts in any branch of knowledge. REDMAN and MORY define
research as “a systematical effort to gain new knowledge”.The study is dominated by
secondary data which is collected through the annual reports and financial statement of
ASB automobile of BATAS organization. Primary data and information are also used in
this research, which are collected through unstructured interview with concerned
management (Redman &Mory, 1996).

1.4.1 Selection of the Organization

The intern had to select the business organization which could help me to broaden my
spectrum of knowledge about the sales and marketing of this organization. So, it is
decided to choose the BATAS organization for doing my internship due to various
suitability factors. It would provide an opportunity to realize my theoretical knowledge
in to practical knowledge.

1.4.2 Placement of the Organization

During the period of internship, it was placed in the sales and marketing department to
deal with the prospects. It was required to handle all the activities of the department
including sales prospecting, dealing, collecting payments, customer follow up, sales
presenting and finally objection meeting under the co-ordination of the sales staff named
Deepa Acharya, Subash Acharya, Amar Chhetri, Sujan Poudel, Damber Karki, Kishor
Poudel and department head Mr. Pushparaj Baral and others.

3
1.4.3 Duration

The internship period was 8 weeks. It started from June 15th and ended on August 15th
2018.

1.4.4 Nature and Sources of Data

All the reports are prepared by primary and secondary data. It can be collected from
primary and secondary sources. It can be collected through asking with concern people
and acquire through related publications such as: annual reports, journals, brochures, etc.
This report uses both primary sources and secondary sources.

Primary Sources

Primary sources are the method through which first hand data is collected. There are
various sources through which data can be collected such as questionnaire, observation,
interview, etc. For this study, all three sources have been used to get the required inputs
to know the operations, dealing with customers and interact with the employees in the
organization.

Secondary Sources

Data which are collected from other sources rather than primary sources like magazines,
journals, newspaper articles, and other organizational publications. Internet is also
another source of secondary data.

In this research, population category is taken from the customer of Nepal wheel who
came to purchase and for the sales of recondition vehicles. As mostly are come from the
Gandaki and Dhawalagiri zones. They are from business people, Service employees and
Farmers who produce and supply large quantity of agricultural products, those who have
own four wheel vehicle and want four wheel vehicle.

4
1.5 Limitations of the Study

The limitations of the study are as follows:

 The internship period was for limited period of eight weeks.

 The internship was carried out on Batas Organization.
 The result of the study may be generalized to all.
 Shortage of time is also reason for incomprehensiveness.
 The views of the people are biased therefore it may not reflect true picture.

CHAPTER II

INTRODUCTION OF THE INDUSTRY

2.1 Introduction of Automobiles Company

Mahindra & Mahindra

Mahindra & Mahindra Limited is an Indian multinational car manufacturing corporation

headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. It was established in 1945 as Mohammad
& Mahindra and later renamed as Mahindra and Mahindra. It is one of the largest vehicle
manufacturers by production in India and the largest manufacturer of tractors in the
world. It is a part of the Mahindra Group, an Indian conglomerate.

It was ranked 21st on a list of top companies in India by Fortune India 500 in 2011. Its
major competitors in the Indian market include Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors.

Mahindra & Mahindra was set up as a steel trading company in 1945

in Ludhiana as Mohammad & Mahindra by brothers Kailash Chandra Mahindra and J.C.
Mahindra and Malik Ghulam Mohammed. After India gained independence and Pakistan
was formed, Mohammed emigrated to Pakistan where he became that country's
first finance minister. The company changed its name to Mahindra & Mahindra in 1948.It
eventually saw a business opportunity in expanding into manufacturing and selling larger
MUVs, starting with the assembly under license of the Willys Jeep in India. Soon
established as the Jeep manufacturers of India, the company later commenced
manufacturing light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and agricultural tractors.

Mahindra CL 550 MDI, a Licensed Jeep Clone by Mahindra

Over the past few years, the company has taken interest in new industries and in foreign
markets. They entered the two-wheeler industry by taking over Kinetic Motors in
India. M&M also has a controlling stake in the REVA Electric Car Company and

6
acquired South Korea's SsangYong Motor Company in 2011. In 2010–11 M&M entered
in micro drip irrigation with the takeover of EPC Industries Ltd in Nashik.

In October 2014, Mahindra and Mahindra acquired a 51% controlling stake in Peugeot
Motorcycles.

In December 2015, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd and affiliate Tech Mahindra Ltd, through
a special purpose vehicle (SPV), have agreed to buy a 76.06% stake in Italian car
designer Pininfarina SpA, for €25.3 million (around Rs.186.7 crores).

In January 2017, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd (M&M) acquired a 75.1 equity stake in
Hisarlar Makina Sanayive Ticaret Anonim Şirketi (Hisarlar), a farm equipment company,
marking its entry into Turkey.

In September 2017 Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd acquired Erkunt Traktor Sanayii AS, a
Turkish tractor maker and its foundry business for ₹800 crores.

Automobile

Automobile, self-propelled vehicle used primarily on public roads but adoptable to other
surfaces. Automobiles changed the world during 20th century, particularly in United
States and other industrialized nations. From the growth of suburbs to the development of
elaborate road and highway system, the so-called horseless carriage has forever altered
the modern landscape. The manufacture, sale, and servicing of automobiles have become
key elements of industrial economies. But along with greater mobility and job creation,
the automobile has brought noise and air pollution and automobile accidents rank among
the leading causes of death and injury throughout the world. But better or worse, the 1900
can be the age of the automobile, and cars will not doubt continue to shape our culture
and economy well into the 21st century.

Automobiles are classified by size, style, number of doors, and intended use. The typical
automobile, also called motorbike, car, auto passenger car. Those use to carry cargo
called pickups or trucks depending on size and design
(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/introduction-automobiles).

7
2.2 Origin and the History of Automobiles

The automobile was first invented and perfected in Germany and France in the late
1800s, though Americans quickly came to dominate the automotive industry in the first
half of the twentieth century. Henry Ford innovated mass-production techniques that
became standard, and Ford, General Motors and Chrysler emerged as the “Big Three”
auto companies by the 1920s. Manufacturers funneled their resources to the military
during World War II, and afterward automobile production in Europe and Japan soared to
meet growing demand. Once vital to the expansion of American urban centers, the
industry had become a shared global enterprise with the rise of Japan as the leading
automaker by 1980.

Although the automobile was to have its greatest social and economic impact in the
United States, it was initially perfected in Germany and France toward the end of the
nineteenth century.

When Were Cars Invented?

The 1901 Mercedes, designed by Wilhelm May bach for Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft,
deserves credit for being the first modern motorcar in all essentials.

Its thirty-five-horsepower engine weighed only fourteen pounds per horsepower, and it
achieved a top speed of fifty-three miles per hour. By 1909, with the most integrated
automobile factory in Europe, Daimler employed some seventeen hundred workers to
produce fewer than a thousand cars per year.

Nothing illustrates the superiority of European design better than the sharp contrast
between this first Mercedes model and Ransom E. Olds 1901-1906 one-cylinder, three-
horsepower, tiller-steered, curved-dash Oldsmobile, which was merely a motorized horse
buggy. But the Olds sold for only $650, putting it within reach of middle-class
Americans, and the 1904 Olds output of 5,508 units surpassed any car production
previously accomplished.

The central problem of automotive technology over the first decade of the twentieth
century would be reconciling the advanced design of the 1901 Mercedes with the

8
moderate price and low operating expenses of the Olds. This would be overwhelmingly
an American achievement.

Henry Ford and William Durant

Bicycle mechanics J. Frank and Charles Duryea of Springfield, Massachusetts, had

designed the first successful American gasoline automobile in 1893, then won the first
American car race in 1895, and went on to make the first sale of an American-made
gasoline car the next year.

Thirty American manufacturers produced 2,500 motor vehicles in 1899, and some 485
companies entered the business in the next decade. In 1908 Henry Ford introduced the
Model T and William Durant founded General Motors.

The new firms operated in an unprecedented seller’s market for an expensive consumer
goods item. With its vast land area and a hinterland of scattered and isolated settlements,
the United States had a far greater need for automotive transportation than the nations of
Europe. Great demand was ensured, too, by significantly higher per capita income and
more equitable income distribution than European countries.

Model T

Given the American manufacturing tradition, it was also inevitable that cars would be
produced in larger volume at lower prices than in Europe. The absence of tariff barriers
between the states encouraged sales over a wide geographic area. Cheap raw materials
and a chronic shortage of skilled labor early encouraged the mechanization of industrial
processes in the United States.

This in turn required the standardization of products and resulted in the volume
production of such commodities as firearms, sewing machines, bicycles, and many other
items. In 1913, the United States produced some 485,000 of the world total of 606,124
motor vehicles.

The Ford Motor Company greatly outpaced its competitors in reconciling state-of-the-art
design with moderate price. Cycle and Automobile Trade Journal called the four-
cylinder, fifteen-horsepower, $600 Ford Model N (1906-1907) “the very first instance of
a low-cost motorcar driven by a gas engine having cylinders enough to give the shaft a

9
turning impulse in each shaft turn which is well built and offered in large numbers.”
Deluged with orders, Ford installed improved production equipment and after 1906 was
able to make deliveries of a hundred cars a day.

Encouraged by the success of the Model N, Henry Ford was determined to build an even
better “car for the great multitude.” The four-cylinder, twenty-horsepower Model T, first
offered in October 1908, sold for $825. Its two-speed planetary transmission made it easy
to drive, and features such as its detachable cylinder head made it easy to repair. Its high
chassis was designed to clear the bumps in rural roads. Vanadium steel made the Model T
a lighter and tougher car, and new methods of casting parts (especially block casting of
the engine) helped keep the price down.

Committed to large-volume production of the Model T, Ford did innovate modern mass
production techniques at his new Highland Park, Michigan, plant, which opened in 1910
(although he did not introduce the moving assembly line until 1913-1914). The Model T
runabout sold for $575 in 1912, less than the average annual wage in the United States.

By the time the Model T was withdrawn from production in 1927, its price had been
reduced to $290 for the coupe, 15 million units had been sold, and mass personal
“automobility” had become a reality. (www.history.com/topics/inventions/automobiles)

2.3 Challenges of Automobiles in Nepal

Nepal has come along a long way in the automobile sector. Rana Prime Minister Juddha
Shamsher Rana introduced vehicle for the first time in Nepal on B.S. 1958. Later on it
takes professional turn on B.S. 2017. Automobile sector provides a very important input
to the national economy through its job generating capacity for its skilled, unskilled and
semi-skilled labors. It can contribute to the upmost to boost country economy if taken
seriously. It is good source of tax revenue.

However, the development in automobile is very sluggish. It has been 3 decades of

establishment of NADA, it hasn’t flourished yet. This is because government has not
focused on developing infrastructure for automobiles. It’s necessary to reduce the hefty
excise duty imposed on the import of the automobiles. In addition, increase in fuel costs,
political instability, the long term growth story of Nepal’s auto industry remains intact.

10
Another important thing is involvement of private sectors in government agencies like
RAC, CERC, Road Board and National Transport Board is necessary. It is important that
government should discuss the issues with the private sectors before issuing new rules so
that they can be implemented promptly without hassles. However, the initiative of the
government to implement Euro 3 standard is praiseworthy
(http://www.scribd.com/doc/50638722/challenges).

2.4 Provision of Automobile Facility in Budget

The government and the business community cannot dream a budget with a lesser
priority to the automobiles imports and import of petroleum fuels. Thus, the philosophy
to reduce use of fossils fuel, which the country spends more than its GDP bleak. The
budget of the country has always been a matter for economists, politicians, intellectuals,
and even commoners. All look at the budget and the trend it travels sensitizing every
single person in the country. The taxation, development activities go ahead with the
budget plans. The provisions of the budget make the life easier and the harder both. It
relaxes the consumers narrowly, but normally hit badly by escalating the daily consuming
commodities in the market. The consumer’s compulsions turn out to big or small who can
create artificial scarcity and hoard the necessary commodities. However, there are various
issues still to be taken care of. The government fails to value the contribution of the
sector in nation building. It never comes up with improved policies for the development
of this sector. The policy makers are not aware of this problem and do not try and
alleviate it in order to improve the roles of the automobiles industry. Focusing on issues
related to the customs duty structure, auto traders that the government need to examine
them and come up with a concrete agenda. In fact, harsh taxation policy against the sector
has been blockage for the development of this sector. Issues related with taxation have
been coming around time and again and government fails to address it every time
(https://www.mof.gov.np/autobudget).

4.2 Problems Solved

The following given points can be presented in this regard:

Assisting Sales Volume Rise

During the eight weeks internship period, there was rapid increase in the sales volume of
BOLERO PIKUP. 110 vehicleswere sold during that period. In that period, Bolero
became the largest selling MAHINDRA product (i.e.6) in a single day by Batas Brothers.

Customer Profile Preparation

time consuming and at the same time Intern has applied the approach of making
photocopy of important document to keep them as reference for the future.

Objection Handling

Not all the prospects are loyal towards the products and services. They may not get
satisfaction. So, it is a duty and responsibility of sales personnel to handle the objection
related to the products, services and other facilities. However, Intern has fulfilled these
activities to make positive convinces believe in “Customer are God”.
