Philosophy of Quality

"We shall deliver defect-free products, services and solutions to meet the requirements of our

external and internal customers, the first time, every time."

To exist as a market leader in a globally competitive marketplace, organizations need to adopt

and implement a continuous improvement-based quality policy. One of the key elements to

HCL's success is its never-ending pursuit of superior quality in all its endeavors.

HCL INFOSYSTEMS believes in the Total Quality Management philosophy as a means for

continuous improvement, total employee participation in quality improvement and customer

satisfaction. Its concept of quality addresses people, processes and products.

Over the last 32 years, we have adapted to newer and better Quality standards that helped us

effectively tie Quality with Business Goals, leading to customer and employee satisfaction.

QUALITY AT HCL INFOSYSTEMS LTD

The history of structured quality implementation in HCL Infosystems began in the late 1980s

with the focus on improving quality of its products by using basis QC tools and Failure

Reporting and Corrective Active Systems (FRACAS). We also employed concurrent engineering

practices including design reviews, and rigorous reliability tests to uncover latent design defects.

In the early 90s, the focus was not merely on the quality of products but also the process quality

systems. Our manufacturing unit at NOIDA was certified initially to ISO 9002:1994 by Bureau

Veritas Certification in 1994 and later on to ISO 9001:1994 in 1997. As of now, all our

manufacturing units are certified by Bureau VERITAS Certification as per ISO 9001:2000 and

ISO 14001: 2004

1

In early 1995, a major quality initiative was launched across the company based on Philip B.

Crosby's methodology of QIPM (Quality Improvement Process Management). This model was

selected to because it considered the need and commitment by an organization to improve but

more importantly, the individual's need towards better quality in his personal life.

Under our Quality Education System program, we train our employees on the basic concepts and

tools of quality. A number of improvement projects have been undertaken by our employees,

whereby process deficiencies and bottlenecks are identified, and Corrective Action Projects

(CAPs) are undertaken. This reduces defect rates and improves cycle times in various processes,

including personal quality.

We have received MAIT's 'Level II recognition for Business Excellence' for our initiatives in the

Information Technology Industry, adding another commendation to our fold. MAIT's Level II

recognition is based on the 'European Foundation for Quality Management' (EFQM), for gaining

quality leadership and business competitiveness.

Our certifications / awards in 2003 include ISO 9001-2000 by Bureau VERITAS Certification

for our Info Structure Services and award of First Prize by ELCINA (Electronic Component

Industries Association) for Quality, 2002-03. The ELCINA award criteria consider two aspects.

(1) Enablers (Leadership & Management commitment, Resource Management, Product

Realization, Measurement Analysis & Improvement)

(2) Results (Product Quality, Customer / Stake holder satisfaction, Business results).

MARKETING STRATEGY

If the company has obtained an adequate understanding of the customer base and its own

competitive position in the industry, marketing manager are able to make their own strategic

decision and develop a marketing strategic designed to maximize the revenue a n he profit of the

firm. The selected strategic may aim for any variety of specific objective, including optimizing

short term unit margins, revenue growth, market share, long term profitability or other goals.

To achieve the desired objective, marketer typically identified one or target customer segment

which they intended to pursue. Customer segment are often selected as targets because they can

score highly on two dimensions:

• The segment is attractive to serve because it is large, growing, makes frequent

purchase, is not price sensitive (i.e. is willing to pay high prices) or other factor and

• The companies has the resources and capabilities to compete for the segment’s

business, can meet their needs better than the competition, can do so profitability fact, a

commonly cited definition of marketing is simply “meeting needs profitability”

This implication of selecting target segment is that the business will subsequently allocate more

resources to acquire and retain customer in the target segment(s) than it will for other, non

targeted customer. In some cases, the firm may go so far as to turn away customer who are not in

its targeted segment. The doorman at swanky nightclubs e.g. may deny entry to unfashionable

dressed individual because the business has made a strategic to target the “high fashion” segment

of nightclub patterns.

In conjunction with targeting decisions, marketing managers will identified the desired

positioning they want the company, product or brand to occupy the target customer’s mind. This

positioning is often encapsulation of a key benefit the company’s product or services offers that

is differentiated and superior to the benefits offered by the competitive product.

PROJECT TITLE

“PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES AND TECHNIQUES OF HCL CDC”

Promotion is one of the four elements of marketing mix (product, price, distribution, promotion).

1
PR POMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES & TECHNIQUES OF HCL CDC
0
2
It is the communication between the seller and the buyer for the purpose of influencing

informing, or persuading a potential buyer’s purchasing decision.

The following are the two types of Promotion:

• Above the line promotion: Promotion is the media (T.V, Radio, Internet,

Newspaper, Mobile Phones & historically illustrated songs) in which the advertiser pay

an advertising agency to place the Ad

• Below the line promotion: All other promotion much of this is intended to be

subtle enough for the consumer to be unaware that promotion is taking place. E.g.

Sponsorship, product placement, endorsement, sales promotion, merchandising, direct

mail, personal selling, public relation, trade show.

The specification of five elements creates a promotion mix or promotional plans. These

elements are the sales promotion, direct selling, public relation, advertising and publicity. A

promotional mix specifies how much attention is to pay to each of the five sub categories,

and how much money is to budget for each. A promotional plan have a wide range of

objectives including; sales increase, new product acceptance, creation of brand equity,

positioning, competitive relations, or creation of corporate image. Fundamentally there are

three basic objectives of sales promotion. These are:

• To present information to consumer as well as others.

• To increase demand.

Prospecting for evaluating the potential customer- It is a process of finding and evaluating

potential customer. I identified if the potential customer has the ability, willingness and authority

to buy the product.

• Generating Glades – A sales lead can be in th form of an individual or an

organization that might need or buy the company’s product

• Identifying Organization – A prospect is a person in the organization that

indicates the need for a product.

Approach

In this stage I made an initial contact with the potential customer and tried to find out his

need.

Presentation

It is the most important stage in the sales process. The aim of my presentation is to attract

the prospects attention, stimulate his interest and stir a desire for the produce, so that he

takes appropriate action. The main aim is to communicate the product benefits effectively

to the prospects and convince him/her to purchase the product not only spoke about the

benefits the customer is looking for , but also convinced him about the additional benefits

of the product.

INTERPRETATION

The interpretations of the project are as follows:

1
PR POMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES & TECHNIQUES OF HCL CDC
0
2
• During my survey well asking that which IT institute do you prefer, then out of 100

customer 30% says that they will prefer HCL CDC. The reason which is given by them is

HCL CDC is one of the good brands in IT firm & by joining HCL there placement got

cure.

• As HCL CDC is providing major type of courses which have surveyed the area of interest

which I find out of students more towards CCNA which is one of the network course.

The reason behind that is most of the students are mainly concern with networking or

they may having a degree or diploma in software which is provided by many institute.

• When I asked the students why they like HCL CDC then most of them answered that that

will get a quality instead of quantity in HCL CDC which is later on followed by brand

name because the students know that HCL Company is known to everyone and is very

much obvious that the courses which provided by HCL CDC will be quality oriented.

• During my survey related to its awareness amongst the student, most of them replied that

they get the information related to HCL CDC and their programs mainly through

newspaper and broachers. As one of the new course so most of the students are not aware

about the courses so because of few students can able to know about the course to their

friends.

• As HCL CDC providing various facilities like discount coupons, bank loans so where

asking which offer is beneficial to students most of them i.e. almost 64% said that they

will prefer to opt for bank loan instead of discount coupons. The reason which is got most

of them is having the perception that they will go for loan it will be responsibility of

HCL CDC to provide job.

1

• The promotional activities of HCL CDC were graded as fair by 80% of students because

for its facilities of loan brand name and courses they offered.

• Well I curiously asked for most of students that why they are choosing HCL CDC: the

answer which I got very much similar which expected most of them choosing HCL CDC

because HCL having brand name and good reputation in the market and the only

company in the market which opened its own institution to prepare HCL human resource

in its own way of training & personality development. The market apart from its quality

& price.

• Company was doing various promotional activities like Hand billing, Road show,

Seminars and Area campaigning but were asking which was the prefer most by the

students 41% said the area campaign is one the best way to contact with them. 35% were

agreed for seminars & 23% for Hand billing. This is so because area campaign the way

by which most of the students whether he/she is from college or school going or road side

one can able to know what exactly HCL CDC offering them which is not fulfill by

seminars or hand billing in a satisfactory position.

• After asking which course mostly preferred by the students the answer which

I got most was short-term courses which are having duration of six months or one year.

Minority were asking long term courses which is having duration of 2-3 years. This is so

because the majority of students which is surveyed were doing job so they mostly

preferred the short term courses.

1
PR POMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES & TECHNIQUES OF HCL CDC

2
• Lastly I asked that which timing are mostly suits to them then 47% said that evening is

most suitable to them as I have said earlier that most of them doing job so they take out

the time for training in evening after the office.

CONCLUSION

“Excellence has always been achieved by those who dared to believe that something inside them

was superior to circumstances. So believe in yourself and try your level best.”

By: Subha Narayan Murthy

This phrase says it all. It is truly inspiring that one must believe in what one is doing and stand

by your decision and work hard towards it, so that you may achieve excellence.

Summer internship for any MBA would be an experience by itself, so was it for me. Working to

me was something new, as I had worked anywhere else before. But this voyage of internship

taught me a lot about my profession as marketing person.

HCL has given me a platform to work in the corporate and understand the working practices in

the education environment. This internship was like a fresh star of my career, the learning which

I have undertaken hare will stay along with me through my journey of working. My experience

working as a trainee was tremendous. I got to understand & learn how a big education hub

company works. I got to understand the marketing process & its various functionality. At HCL

CDC I had the opportunity to learn about the market promotion strategies. My Interns were

basically focused on how to promote the different Hardware, Software & networking courses

provided by HCL CDC to the students. I learnt various aspects of these strategies.

After my tenure of working here has benefited me a lot and has given me confidence in my own

work and decision. My experience here was more than my expectation. The work environment

which I was not use to was made very friendly by my Mentor Mr. Abhishek Shrivastav and I

would remember his help which he provided me during my tenure of internship.

2
LIMITATION

• The data collected is totally dependent on respondent’s views, which could be bias in

nature.

• Sometimes respondents do not give a response or give partial response. It is called non

response error. The reason may be lack of knowledge or unwillingness to answer.

• The sample size is small and it may not actually represent the whole population

• There is limited time available each day and lot of tasks have to completed in a day like

preparing reports, conducting surveys, spend time at the office to gain knowledge etc.

RECOMMENDATION

• HCL CDC needs to advertise more & spends to more on “Above the line activity”. This

will increase popularity of the brand of HCL CDC.

• Prices of the some courses are match with the price of competitors but prices some of the

courses are higher. So the price of some courses is to be reduced to increase number of

registration.

• Proper follow up are required at right time. As time lag will put a negative impact on the

minds of the customer.

• A plan made should be executed properly. It should not e diluted by execution of new

plan.

• Colleges should be approached when it they reopens and when they don’t have any kind

of exam schedule.

• I feel that less emphasis on Software courses as compared to Hardware & Networking

courses.

1

2
• Regular touch with mass should be maintained in the form of journals and publishing in

daily newspaper and magazines. These will put an impact on consumer minds.

• Promote its educational product under the brand name of HCL by putting up kiosks and

conducting interview process for interested candidates in job fair and educating the

candidates about the importance of of industry specific HCL certified courses and global

certification program in their centers.
