CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Description of Pedawa Village


Pedawa Village is one of the ancient villages in Bali that also known as Bali
Aga. It is located in Sub-district of Banjar, Buleleng Regency. It is about 3 hours
from Ngurah Rai International Airport. Pedawa Village surrounds by valleys and
hills that makes this village very amazing. Before known as Pedawa Village, this
village’s name was Gunung Tambleg as the people were so simple and innocent.
When the people’s activities had been changed to collect the nectar and process it
to be Gula Aren or known also as Palm Sugar, the name of village was changed to
be Gunung Sari. Based on ancient literature, Gunung Sari people once had an
extraordinary habit in treating a dead body, which is not buried nor burned it. The
dead bodies of children were thrown away into the large wood pit while the adult
bodies were put under the tree and encircled by hibiscus flower. Then, there was
a king named Sri Maha Raja Bima, who made an order about the burial
procedure including the ceremony. From that moment, the dead body should
be buried with the proper ceremony. All of the people in Gunung Sari village
knew that Bima belongs to Pandawa family (in Mahabarata puppet shadow
show) and that is the reason why that village is also known as Pedawa
Village.
1.2 Why this Village is Interesting to be Discuss
The reasons why Pedawa Village is interesting to be discuss is because
Pedawa Village is known as Bali Aga Village in Bali which is known still
has some unique traditions, rituals, and culture to explore. …
CHAPTER II
TRADITIONS, RITUAL, AND CULTURES

2.1 Tradition in Pedawa Village


1. Ngaga
Ngaga is a tradition of planting gogo rice in a dry field (?) in Pedawa Village.
This tradition is consider as a unique tradition because it’s carried out by middle-
aged women who planting while cheering because people in Pedawa Village
believe it would keep the pests away during the planting process. They gather in an
8-acres field, wearing Madia traditional clothes (t-shirt and sarong). They start the
tradition by giving offerings and pray for the plant’s fertility. After that they made
a small hole with bamboo and planted the rice seeds that mixed with other seeds
like corn, godem, kedu, jali, and other seeds that usually use for religious ceremony.
After planting the seeds, the tradition continue with do the offerings to Ida Bhatara
Sri Rambut Sedana, then the people who join this tradition will eat together or
Balinese people called it megibung. This tradition ends with praying together to
Dewi Sri as a symbol of fertility, in hope the ‘gogo’ rice can grow well and so they
can use it for religious ceremony. This tradition was last carried out in 1971 and
almost extinct because people in Pedawa Village started to do cacao and cloves
planting, but few months ago this tradition was held again with the aim of
preserving the ancestors’ tradition.

2. Namunang Pulpul
After planting tradition (ngaga), there is a tradition called namunang pulpul.
Namunang pulpul comes from the word namunang which means collect and pulpul
means the equipment that are used for planting rice. SO, namunang pulpul means
collecting the rice planting equipment for the ceremony. This tradition held around
four weeks after the rice planting itself. The tradition continue on another day by
giving the offerings only until the ‘gogo’ rice is harvest.

3. Weding Tradition in Pedawa Village


In Pedawa Village there is a unique wedding ceremony that called “Melaib”.
Melaib means running in English. This tradition divided into five kinds that has its
own circumstances, such as.
- Melaib ngemaling
Melaib ngemaling is a wedding ceremony that conducted based on love
between two people. This tradition gives a woman the rights to make their own
choice. This tradition begins with a meeting between the man and the woman's
family where the man brings offering to convey the woman's family that they
have eloped. If there are no obstacles, the couple can be pronounced as husband
and wife by Ulu Desa witnessed by Kelian adat, Perbekel, and people in
Pedawa Village.
- Melaib ngerorod
Melaib ngerorod is a wedding ceremony that held when a man takes someone
else's wife and makes her his wife. Before the couple pronounced as husband
and wife, they should take legal action to resolve the problem.
- Melaib ngidih
Melaib ngidih is a wedding ceremony where a man promised to the woman's
family. After both parties made a promise, this ceremony continue by Ngidih
ceremony. This ceremony aims to show that a man has asked the woman to
marry him. After this ceremony is over, it is followed by Ngambil ceremony
and close by Nyambe ceremony or wedding legalization.
- Melaib negteg
Melaib negteg is a wedding ceremony that held when the villagers report to the
Kelian Adat if there is a pregnant woman in their village and this woman
recognized who was impregnated her, Kelian Adat will call this man to make
him admit it, so they will be married.
- Melaib ngangken
Melaib nganken is a wedding ceremony held when a woman has admitted that
she was impregnate by her lover, then if the man admits it too, the couple is
married immediately.

2.2 Ritual in Pedawa Village


1. Ngetus
Ngetus is a ritual that held before the gogo rice harvest. This ritual aims for
a gratitude for success of the gogo rice harvest in Pedawa village. The ceremony
begins put the offerings in the middle of the field on sanggah cucuk. Then, some
middle-aged women come together into the fields. After the ritual is over, the
villagers begin to harvest the gogo rice using a traditional tools called ani- ani. The
rice grains are left without threshed the seeds. Then, the harvest is stored in a
granary for religious ceremony. Same as Ngetus ritual, this tradition has not been
held since 1971 or around 48 years.

2.3 Culture in Pedawa Village


1. Pedawa Traditional House
Traditional house is Pedawa Village has its own traditional house that called
Bandung Rangki. This traditional house has bamboo roof, walls made from bamboo
woven or known as gedeg, the floor still tile-less, and the foundation made from
solid rock. There is no partition between the main bedroom, child's room, kitchen,
and place of worship. Everything still has the past's atmosphere that makes this
traditional house is very interesting.

2. Sanggah Nganten
Sanggah nganten is a place of worship or Balines people called it sanggah that
Pedawa people who are married must have. This sanggah is made from 8 bamboo
poles which approximately has 2 meters high and there are 7 place for put the
offerings or known as rongan by Balinese people, such as.
1. Gede Kemulan Taksu.
2. Pengandel (Majapahit temple)
3. Batur Mekasa (It couldbe different on each family, based on what they
believe).
4. Ulun Danu Temple.
5. Labuhan Aji Temple.
6. Munduk Duur Temple.
7. Alas Kawolan Temple.

Conclusion

Pedawa Village is one of the ancient villages in Bali that also known as Bali
Aga. It is located in Sub-district of Banjar, Buleleng Regency. Pedawa Village is very
interesting because Pedawa Village has some unique traditions, rituals, and culture.
The unique tradition that exist in Pedawa Village are : Ngaga, a tradition of planting
gogo rice in a dry field which is Ngaga tradition is carried out by middle-aged women
who planting while cheering, Namunang Pulpul and Wedding Tradition that called
“Melaib”, which can divided into five kinds that has its own circumstances, such as :
melaib ngemaling, melaib ngerorod, melaib ngidih, melaib negteg, melaib ngangken.
A sacred ritual in Pedawa Village named Ngetus, is a ritual that held before the gogo
rice harvest. This ritual aims for a gratitude for success of the gogo rice harvest in
Pedawa village. Beautiful culture that Pedawa Village has are : bandung rangki, a
traditional house of Pedawa Village and Sanggah Nganten for pedawa people
