CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
All living things need water to stay alive, and plants are living things! Plants,

however, need much more water than many living things because plants use

much more water than most animals. Plants also need water for photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis is what plants do to create their food, and water is critical to this

process. Water enters a plant's stem and travels up to its leaves, which is where

photosynthesis actually takes place. In today’s time, plants need to be taken care

of because of the rapid rate of climate change. Rivers dry up and oceans doesn’t

produce a lot of nutrients for plants anymore. What if there is an alternative water

type that can make seeds grow the fastest and help trees and plants flourish in

the fastest way possible.

1.1 Background of the Study

Plants need three main elements in order to grow: water, sunlight, and

carbon dioxide. Water is important to plants for various reasons, such as

transporting gases during photosynthesis and creating glucose needed for

energy. Plants can grow when watered with other liquds.

Watering plants with different liquids provides the plants with not only the

water needed for growth and other functions, but it provides the plant with other

gases and nutrients that either support growth. For example, watering Baby’s

Tears plants with carbonated water provides pants with macronutrients, such as

carbon, potassium, and sulfur, according to the University of Colorado at Boulder.

- ( Williams, 2009)

Plants need sunlight, nutrient, rich soil and water to grow. Though the quality of

the water has an effect on the plant’s health, there are many plants that are able

to grow even when they are given water that is polluted or that has some salt

content. Most plants are unable to grow out of water that is salty is as salty as the

ocean, though there are a few varieties that can. Water is not always in abundant

supply, and when it comes down to making sure that people have enough to

drink, sometimes plants are asked to go without. Farmers have turned to use

brackish water, or water that has low salt content for the crops. Understanding

what types of fluid plants can use that can help scientists learn more about how

to meet the needs plants as well as people in times of draught. (Crystal Beran).

There are three important things that plant need to grow: sunlight, nutrients and

water. If you are to alter these necessities in terms of quantity and quality the

plant would feel its effects. The uptake of water from the roots, through the xylem

and into the rest of the plant is an essential part of a plant ability to

photosynthesize. Also, water is necessary to create cell tension, which gives

plants their form. Lastly, some minerals like calcium are stored in water and the

plant can only access these minerals by taking water ( Graham, 2006) Due to

extreme importance of water in the life of a plant, we decided to investigate the

effect of water quality has on plant growth.

1.4 Theoretical Framework

 Liebig’s Law of Minimum
Justus von Liebig's Law of the Minimum states that yield is proportional

to the amount of the most limiting nutrient, whichever nutrient it may be.

From this, it may be inferred that if the deficient nutrient is supplied, yields

may be improved to the point that some other nutrient is needed in greater

quantity than the soil can provide, and the Law of the Minimum would

apply in turn to that nutrient. Liebig made great contributions to the

science of plant nutrition and soil fertility. As a result of millenia of practical

experience of farmers manuring fields to improve fertility, many early

chemists thought that the "principle of vegetation", the essential nutrients

needed for plant growth, were organic in nature rather than mineral. Liebig

essentially debunked the humus theory and made a scientific case for

plant requirements for mineral elements from the soil, carbon from CO2 in

the air, and H and O2 from water.

Water is the major molecule present in plant cells and organs. In addition

to an essential role in plant structure, development, and growth, water can

be important for the internal circulation of organic molecules and salt.

Plants do not have blood vessels like humans. Instead, they have vascular

tissue that allows water and other molecules to flow. One kind of vascular

tissue called xylem (pronounced “zīlem”) allows the flow of water and

nutrients from the roots up through the rest of the plant.Another kind of

vascular tissue called phloem (pronounced “flōm”) carries sugars and

other molecules down from the leaves through the rest of the plant. Just

as blood vessels carry blood to nourish every cell in your body, vascular

tissues carry water, nutrients, and sugars to nourish plant cells.

1.5. Hypotheses
 The plant watered with tap water will be the slowest plant to grow.
 The plant watered with distilled water will grow much slower than the plant

with alkaline water

 The fastest plant that will grow will be the one watered with alkaline water.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The researchers aims to know the liquid will make seeds grow the fastest

and determine the different effects of the different liquids to the same type of

plant.

The researchers chose this study because they believe that they can prove

the fastest liquid can solve the occurring problems we are currently facing right

now such as like the Global Warming and Deforestation. They especially want to
6

help the farmers who have trouble in their livelihoods. The study will be

conducted in Nuestra Senora De Aranzazu Parochial School SY. 2019-2020 and

limited only to the Junior high Students. The students started on June 2019 and

will finish in February 2020.

1.7 Significance of the Study

The results of the study will be of great benefit to the following:
Farmers - they need to know what type of liquid they can use to make

their crops grow faster and produce and provide more product and

income.
Gardeners - they need to know the type of liquid that will make their

plants grow greener and healthier in the fastest and organic way possible
Scientist - our project can help provide deeper and different information

on the used liquids and as well as growth on plants. It also helps with

scientific purposes and future researches.

Enviroment - since our main focus are plants, the enviroment will be a lot

greener because of the liquids we can use to make plants grow and can

result to pollution most likely decreasing because of the rapid growth of

plants because of our study.

Future Researchers – The research can help them because they can get

more information if they chose to study the same topic that we have. They

can get information that can be advantages to complete their research

papers.

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter includes the review of related literature and studies which

the researchers have perused to shed light on the topic under the study.
FOREIGN LITERATURE
Rodriguez ( 2018) revealed that Just as humans digest food for energy,

plants use a number of absorption techniques to get the nutrients and moisture

necessary for vigorous growth. As roots dive into the soil, they encounter air,

water and nutrient reserves. In contrast, photosynthesizing leaves discover

sunlight and air as they rise into the sky. Although roots cannot absorb nutrients

directly through their extensions, water becomes the carrier for soluble elements

and healthy plant growth. The literature is closely related to the current study for

it states that water is a major component of plant growth. They state that plants

although can’t absorb nutrients just by their roots alone, they absorb it through

the water that enters it.

Hyland ( 2018) stated that the type of water that is used is also important.

Distilled water is as close to pure water as can be found, most of the impurities

have been taken out of it. Some tap waters contain chemicals which can build up

in the soil of the plant. The water softeners add high levels of salt to the soil and

deplete the nutrients from the soil. Another problem with tap water can be the pH

level of the water. If the water is too acidic or alkaline, the plants are unable to

proceed in using the water to gain its nutrients. If the water is too acidic (that is

with a pH below 7), it reduces the amount of calcium, magnesium, and potassium
9
NUESTRA SEÑORA DE ARANZAZU PAROCHIAL SCHOOL

the plant receives. If the water is too alkaline (with a pH above 7), the calcium

builds up and stops the plant's ability to absorb nutrients. One way of making

sure your plants are getting the correct type of water is by using distilled water.
. The literature is closely related to the current study for it tackles the effects of

distilled water to plants. They also state the levels of pH in the water can greatly

affect the growth rate of plants.

Rodriguez ( 2018) stated that each garden has a different pH value

depending on the soil type and rainfall history in the area; you can easily find

your soil's pH value by using a test kit available from most garden centers or by

having the soil tested by the local extension office. If you live in an area that has

little rain throughout the year, coupled with heavy clay soil, it is possible to have a

highly alkaline garden. However, the majority of plants grow their best in a slightly

acidic pH range of 6 to 7. Alkalinity's effect on plant growth is a direct result of the

roots' ability to take in necessary soil nutrients. oils that do not have a balanced

pH near the neutral 7 measurement will have trouble with nutrient solubility.

Typically, 16 elements must be available within the soil structure for successful

plant growth; nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are the three most important

elements. However, important micronutrients, for example, iron, have difficulty

dispersing throughout soil that is highly alkaline, such as above 7.5. As a result,

the plant shows visible signs of stress and injury across the leaf and stem

structures. The literature is closely related to the current study for it talks about

the alkalines effect on plants and the results of it. They talk about the
10
NUESTRA SEÑORA DE ARANZAZU PAROCHIAL SCHOOL

components of alkaline that can greatly affect the plants. The present study like

the article talks about the effects of watering plants with alkaline water.

Contributors ( 2011) said that plants require several different chemical elements

in order to thrive. Oxygen, carbon and hydrogen are found in water and air;

secondary nutrients that plants need include magnesium, calcium and sulfur.

Beyond that, plants also need such micronutrients as zinc, molybdenum, copper,

manganese, cobalt, iron and boron. The most important chemicals that plants

need, without which they won't thrive, are the three macronutrients: potassium,

nitrogen and phosphorus. The reason for this is that the basic building blocks of

every plant are ATP, cell membranes and amino acids. Nitrogen is an element in

every amino acid; ATP, which is the primary source of energy for all cells,

contains phosphorus. Potassium is essential to a plant's ability to metabolize.

This element also comprises up to two percent of a plant's weight.

Plants that don't receive enough of these three essential macronutrients will be

severely limited in their ability to grow since they would also be deprived of the

basic building blocks. Potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen are created in nature

from decomposing plants that have died. To stimulate plant growth, gardeners

and farmers use fertilizers that contain the three essential macronutrients. Most

fertilizers on the market contain large amounts of potassium, phosphorus and

nitrogen. The literature is closely related to the current study for it talks about the

different nutrients or elements that plant need that is crucial for the current study
11
NUESTRA SEÑORA DE ARANZAZU PAROCHIAL SCHOOL

for it can determine what element is the most important in plants. Therefore we

can see that component in the different liquid and can find what liquid greatly

have that element. They present study like the literature states the common

elements in the liquid and in the plants that can cooperate with each other to

make the study better.

FOREIGN STUDY
Takase et.al (2010) stated that Water research studies in Ghana clearly showed

sever deterioration of water quality in certain areas of the country with adverse

effect on crop growth (Karikari and Ampofo, 2006). Therefore, the scientifically

applied research program related to water quality, conservation and salinity in

agriculture is essential, where agricultural activities account for more than 80% of

the total water consumed. This study is part of a research work conducted on the

use of four sources of water for irrigation of tomato. It specifically report on the

best among four sources of water (river, canal, tap and well) used for irrigating

tomato in Manya Krobo District of Eastern Region by determining the effects the

different sources of water had on growth and development of tomatoes. The

literature is closely related to the current study for it talks about the different

effects of the different water bodies to a plant. The study states in relation to the

current study that different waters can have different effects on a plant growth
