H.P. Sajitha Lakmali

Introduction

Although, the war that lasted 30 years was concluded on 17th May 2009, the national issue was

not resolved. . However, the role of media as a “communication tool”, to establish and govern
the state ideology in society as a part of its social structure, is significant in both Classical and
Post Modern Marxist states. The Religion, Education, Family, Law, Political Authority, Trade
Unions, and Culture and “Media”, perform a very crucial role more than the above mentioned
ideological instruments of the state. Our research topic relates to the social construction of
media, as one such significant ideological instruments of the state. But the roles of the other
ideological instruments of the society do not minimize or de-promote the effect. The significance
of the Sri Lankan Social structure is highlighted. The researcher identified the reasons that
destroy the good will of communities as a nation. Even though, the war has come to an end, the
country is moving towards another dimension of conflict instead. Our observation here is,
Sinhala Buddhist ideology is performing an outstanding service to destroy the attempt at inter-
connection of the communities as a culturally structured civilized society. Consequently, a key
role of this process can be performed by the media by strengthening the relationships, as one
such powerful tool in public sphere. But do we have enough space to accomplish this purpose?
Doesn’t it relate to the basic roots of our social structure? Is it possible for the media survive,
without the assistance of Sinhala-Buddhist ideology? This paper attempts to find out as to how
media can exercise the power to heal the the broken hearts of the communities in Post Modern
Sri Lanka.
