1. Agroindustrial engineering, an important career the development of a second world

country.

Colombia is a very rich country, because it has much biodiversity. On the subject of fruits
and vegetables we have a great advantage in relation to other countries, we can produce
agricultural products all the year and with the different thermal floors we can have many
kinds of tropical and exotical fuits. This is an important fact that we need to take advantage
as agroindustrial engineers. The key is to bring to this products added value with the help of
engineering and the technological innovations. Agroindustrial engineering is a very important
career to bring development to our country, improving the quality of life of the farmers,
because the principal function is to give added value to the products that become to the land,
and so the farmers can be better paid for their products. Also the products with added value
can be exported to other countries and this activity represents a very good news for the
national economy, because our country starts to get wealth from others countries.

For instance in the case of the cape gooseberry, that is a product that can be exported without
any transformation process, but an agroindustrial engineer can make other product with this
fruit, such as sweet, or a drink, and it can be complemented with other products like an ice-
cream, a yogurt, cake, or any other product, but not necessary must be alimentary products,
also it can be unalimetary products like cosmetics. All of this products have engineering
behind, process that was designed by agroindustrial engineers, optimization of the parameters
of each process and the resources that need to develop a product. The professional of this
career can do many things. First an agroindustrial engineer can design a machine that
improves a process in the elaboration of any product that comes from the countryside, such
alimentary or not alimentary. Second he can work in investigation and develop new products,
like a biopesticide. Third he can work on the control of any process and have the capacity to
design a new process. Finally he can lead others engineers, for example a mechanical
engineer at the time of ring up a machine for any process.

The agroindustrial engineer has a wide action field, comparing with others engineers, because
he has the alimentary part and another not alimentary part. He is a professional that has
extensive knowledge of mathematical and natural sciences, with strong scientific and
technological competences with the capacity and interest in observation of the phenomena of
the nature and has the capacity to analyze things that he has seen and with a positive attitude
in the solutions of the problems in the agroindustrial sector.
