FY1961 (01 July 1960 through 31 June 1961)

On 01 October 1961 the Defense Supply Agency (DSA) is formally established to begin operations (on 01 January
1962) as a separate common supply and service agency for the Armed Forces. The AFSSC is renamed the Defense
Logistics Service Center (DLSC), becoming the central control point for the FCS.

Beginning FY1962 the DA "contract number" is changed to a more "compact" sequence which also reflects the DSA
takeover. The new "contract number" begins with DSA (Defense Supply Agency) followed by a single digit (usually a 1
for clothing and individual equipment) that indicates the class of the item. The next group of numbers are the actual
contract number followed by the last two digits of the Fiscal Year the contract is awarded. The last alphabetic character
in the sequence indicates the type of contract.
