ABSTRACT

This project is proposing a Fluid Machinery application that would

provide storing of a pressurized fluid and arrangement of transmitting power at
certain distances in order to lift a heavy object such as a house or villa during
natural calamities like a flood. Incompressible fluids are used by the Hydraulic
systems such as water, or oil to transmit power and forces from one location to
another within the fluid. These systems operate smoothly with reversal function
possibility. The property under consideration for the project is that in a closed
system when the working fluid is pushed from one volume to another the same
power is transmitted. This concept can be used to transmit power from either a
higher volume cylinder to a lower volume one, vice versa or from one cylinder
to multiple cylinders. This system can be made efficient only if the transmission
system is made leak less.
INTRODUCTION

Hydraulic lift technology is a critical aspect of engineering, without

which many applications would not be possible unless another technology
existed to replace it. Automotive, construction, avionics and shipping industries
depend heavily upon it, and it has contributed to a large part of the modern
world as we know it. Hydraulic lift technology has a multitude of industrial
applications, like construction and transport. It is often implemented to operate
heavy machinery or to move and lift heavy and large objects like cars, dirt and
shipping containers.

A hydraulic lift is a type of machine that uses a hydraulic apparatus to lift

or move objects using the force created when pressure is exerted on liquid in a
piston. Force then produces "lift" and "work.“Since 1950s the applications of
hydraulic systems have been started in the industries and this form of power has
become standard for the operations of industrial equipments. Today, modern
automation technology has a very important place for hydraulic systems. The
reason for this is that hydraulic systems are simple, versatile and efficient for
the transmission of power.
PRINCIPLE AND METHODOLOGY
This project is based on Pascal Law. Pascal's principle is defined as:-A change
in pressure at any point in an enclosed fluid at rest is transmitted undiminished
to all points in the fluid. This principle is stated mathematically as:

∆P=Ꝭg∆h

∆P:- is the hydrostatic pressure (given in pascals in the SI system), or the

difference in pressure at two points within a fluid column, due to the weight of
the fluid

ρ:- is the fluid density (in kilograms per cubic meter in the SI system)

g:- is acceleration due to gravity (normally Earth's gravity is expressed

in meters per second squared)

∆h:- is the height of fluid above the point of measurement, or the difference in
elevation between the two points within the fluid column (in meters)

If a U-tube is filled with water and pistons are placed at each end, pressure
exerted against the left piston will be transmitted throughout the liquid and
against the bottom of the right piston. The pressure that the left piston exerts
against the water will be exactly equal to the pressure the water exerts against
the right piston. Suppose the tube on the right side is made wider and a piston of
a larger area is used; for example, the piston on the right has 50 times the area
of the piston on the left. If a 1 N load is placed on the left piston, an additional
pressure due to the weight of the load is transmitted throughout the liquid and
up against the larger piston. The difference between force and pressure is
important: the additional pressure is exerted against the entire area of the larger
piston. Since there is 50 times the area, 50 times as much force is exerted on the
larger piston. Thus, the larger piston will support a 50 N load - fifty times the
load on the smaller piston.

NEED OF HYDRAULIC LIFT AND PURPOSE OF THE
PROJECT

The main job of a hydraulic system is the transmission the power as the
power is changed from one form to another. As these hydraulic systems are
popularly used in the manufacturing and production plants, therefore it is
required that they are reliable and efficient equipments to achieve the desired
results from them like transmission of large amount of forces with the use of
smaller components which means good power intensity and precise positioning
of the equipment with consistent power output.

Considering the recent floods happening in the state and the devastating
nature it has, such a low cost hydraulic system can help in rising the houses to a
particular height and give the residents some more time for relocating and keep
the house safe. The main purpose of this project is to save the houses from the
flood .A simple construction with some motors and pistons in the basement of
the house can help the house to be raised.

COMPONENTS REQUIRED

• 5mL Syringe - 8 Nos

• 50mL Syringe – 2

• 4X sheet

• Rubber IV Tube

• 4 way connector – 2 Nos

• 3 way connector – 2 Nos

CONSTRUCTION

The 4X sheet is cut in the required dimensions to make two houses. The
basement is also made with the sheet. All the syringes are first cleaned with
water and checked for its proper working. The IV tubes are connected to the
ends of the syringes and a tight seal is made first. The outlets from the syringes
are connected to a 4 way and 3 way connectors and the syringes are thus
connected to the master syringe (50 mL syringe).

The syringes are filled with water which in turn will fill the tubes with
water this will create a pathway for the water to flow and transfer force as the
output. The master syringe is filled and adjusted in order to remove air from the
system and to make sure that the in the entire system there is no air.

After the completion of the fluid pathway and connecting of the master
syringe the pathway is checked for any leaks in the system and the proper
functioning of the system. The system is then fixed into the basement of the
house with glue and other adhesives and it is made sure that the syringes are in
proper places and does not move around.

The houses are glued on to the top of the plunger of the 5mL syringes
with proper adhesives. On applying the force to the plunger of the master
syringe the water in the master syringe transfers this force through the fluid
pathway created to the plungers of the small syringes and thereby pushing the
houses in the upward direction.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF HYDRAULIC
SYSTEM

ADVANTAGES;-

• A hydraulic system is an efficient transmitter of power for many reasons.

Firstly, its simple levers and push buttons make it easy to start, stop,
accelerate and decelerate. This also allows for control accuracy. Also,
because it is such a fluid system, without any cumbersome gears, pulleys
or levers, it easily copes with a huge weight range.

• It provides a constant force, regardless of changes in speed. For the most

part, hydraulic systems are simple, safe and economical because they use
fewer moving parts compared to mechanical and electrical systems,
which makes them easier to maintain.

• Hydraulic systems are safe to use in chemical plants and mines because
they do not cause sparks.
DISADVANTAGES;-

• Handling hydraulic fluids is messy, and it can be difficult to totally get rid
of leaks in a hydraulic system.

• If hydraulic fluid leaks in hot areas, it may catch fire. If hydraulic lines
burst, they can cause serious injuries. Take care when handling hydraulic
fluids, as too much exposure can lead to health issues.

• Hydraulic fluids are also corrosive, but some types are less so than others.
For example, two main types of brake fluid are available for hydraulic
mountain bikes, DOT fluid and mineral oil. Due to its non-corrosive
properties, mineral oil is less likely to destroy a bike's paintwork.

• To keep your hydraulic system in its prime, periodically check hydraulic

systems for leaks, lubricate when necessary, and change filters and seals
as required.
PRACTICAL IMPLIMENTATION AND SCOPE FOR
IMPROVEMENT

In the practical case, motors are used to provide the force required to
provide pressure to the master syringe.

In the practical case, the motor is going to be dc motor and dc power

source along with the motor is to be kept in an underground room and this room
is to be insulated to ensure no entering of water.

The signals for working of motor can be given through radio waves
which can be given from the house and the signals can be received through
radio signal receivers in the insulated room.

The signals for the up and down movement can be given through the
same remote

Addition of an electrical motor and a rack and pinion mechanism can

improve the timing of the movement.

For the commercial use, a bigger water storage system and a large motor
which can deliver fluid with high pressure head should be used.

Use of an oil based hydraulic fluid instead of water can improve the system
in the long run due to various factors like boiling point, freezing point,
lubrication and organic growth.
CONCLUSIONS

Hydraulic systems are where much efficient because in hydraulic energy

transmission is very effective and efficient. Through a small transmission of
power, larger buildings can be lifted.

After the model was made we came to the conclusion that using hydraulic
systems like hydraulic pumps piston and cylinder arrangement along with
power sources like D.C generator we can lift houses during floods.

By implementing this in flood prone areas the cost of reconstruction for

the buildings can be cut short. The hardships suffered by the people in these
areas can be cut short to a minimal amount and relocating can be cancelled in
these areas.

Stockpiling of home necessities in the house can prevent the need for the
setting up of relief camps nearby thereby reducing the costs incurred by the
government during the time of future calamities.
