CHAPTER ONE.
INTRODUCTION.
Laundry firms currently use a manual system for the management and
maintenance of critical information. The current system requires numerous paper
forms, with data stores spread throughout the laundry management
infrastructure. Often information is incomplete or doesn’t follow management
standards. Records are often lost in transit during computation requiring a
comprehensive auditing process to ensure that no vital information is lost.
Multiple copies of the same information exist in the laundry firm data and may
lead to inconsistencies in data in various data stores.
A significant part of the operation of any laundry firm involves the acquisition,
management and timely retrieval of great volumes of information. This
information typically involves; customer personal information and clothing
records history, user information, the price of delivery and retrieval period, users
scheduling as regards customers details and dealings in service rendered, also our
products package waiting list. All this information must be managed in an efficient
and cost wise fashion so that the organization resources may be effectively
utilized.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY.
Sanit Laundry Services was established in 2015 and has grown from its humble
beginnings to become the city’s premier commercial laundry service provider.
Their services are catered to meet the needs of their customers both as an
individual and as a business. With 21 locations in the city, their loyal customer
base demonstrates Sanit Laundry Services dedication to dexcellence. They have
provided the community with over 4 years of quality service making them a
household name in the city’s ever changing landscape.
PROBLEM STATEMENT.
Laundry firm currently uses a manual system for the management and
maintenance of critical information. The current system requires numerous paper
forms, with data stores spread throughout the Laundry firm management
infrastructure. Often information is incomplete or does not follow management
standards. Forms are often lost in transit between departments requiring a
comprehensive auditing process to ensure that no vital information is lost. This
has led to inconsistencies in various data due to large volume of contrasting
customer details leading to a mix-up of clothes in the laundry firm which thus
leads to delay in collecting the clothes back. The problems faced here are:
1. Poor statistics about customers: this may be as a result of lost or misplaced
customer records.
2. Longer waiting time: the record clerk wastes so much time in bringing
customer records. In case the management needs the record for a
particular customer, it takes the clerk time to the destination where it is
needed. Thereby contributing to time wastage.
3. Inaccurate customer report: Sometimes customer reports are not properly
stated and reported. Due to the traditional method of storing customer
records, it is difficult to track customer records especially for reporting
purpose.
4. Mishandling of customer records: customer files are often handled with
little or no regard. This leads to detaching and tearing away of some of the
customer’s important documents.
5. Additional workload: the use of the manual system also creates an
additional workload for the staff to keep and obtain the customer and staff
information because this information is kept in a different file.
OBJECTIVE OF STUDY.
The purpose of laundry management system is to automate the management
of the laundry firm making it more efficient and error free. The objectives are:
 To implement a management system that will streamline the
registration process, reduce administrative tasks and paperwork so as to
improve the registration cycle process flow.
 To implement a computerized system that can perform a better
managing process for the laundry firm.
 It aims at standardizing data, consolidating data, ensuring data integrity
and reducing inconsistencies, through the use of a highly computerized
process that is stress-free, reliable and quick through the use of PHP
programming language and SQL database application to both the users
and the staff in charge of the registration and laundry management
processes.
SCOPE OF STUDY.
The Laundry Management System is designed for any Laundry firm to
replace their existing manual, paper-based system. The new system is in
form of an e-registration system to control the following; customer
information, products, services, users, carts and receipt.
Modules.
Some of the modules in the smart laundry management system;
i. Login module.
This module allows user to access the system by entering a valid
username and password.
ii. Customer module.
This module allows staff to add, update, delete and search
customer record.
iii. Service module.
This module is used to record and retrieve service details which
are available for staff of Sanit Laundry firm to use it.
iv. Payment module.
This module is specialized to calculate the total amount of
payment for services. Furthermore, this module also will keep in
the smart laundry management database.
v. Backup and Recovery module.
This module is used when a staff or a manager want to make a
backup to the records in database. They also can recover every
data from database automatically using this module.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY.

This work serves as a launching pad for laundry firms to enhance the
recording system by computerization of their operation.
Though this software is designed using Sparkle Laundry Services as a study
any other laundry firm can use the software with just a little modification.
CHAPTER 2
LITERATURE REVIEW.
Introduction.
This section takes critical review of existing system implemented, the success
factors, challenges faced, technologies used and unresolved problems. This forms
the basis for implementing later versions.
Existing system over proposed system.
The proposed system seeks to simplify the users operation. The stages involved in
the registration process must be reduced to nearest convenient. The crude way of
registration using paper based processes of registration are time consuming and
expensive. The customers are rest assured security and availability of their
clothing as at when due, as information are protected using a specific id.
An increase in the number of customer will obviously mean more paper work and
less efficiency of the existing system. Hence, many laundry firms are finding the
proposed system a better and more effective way of catering for the
inconvenience and inefficiency of the existing system of registration. The
proposed system for laundry firms plays a vital role in the transition and if
effectively implemented, it should be able to:
Reduce paper work and redundancy thereby improving productivity and
lowering cost of printing and purchasing registration materials annually. It
aids the administrative in data management of customers, by allowing the
user to search for any customer with ease.
CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY.
Introduction
In requirement gathering, the aim will be to understand and document the
needed information and process requirements of the proposal system.
Observation
Observations can be either be direct or indirect in direct observation data
subjects being observed are informed while in indirect observation the data
subjects are not informed, technique will be used to physically observe the
processes and observers involve in smart laundry management system.
System Requirement.
System requirement is a description of the needs of a user for an information
system. The unique requirements of a user are identified here.
User Requirements.
To gain access to the smart laundry management system resources, the user
would need:
 A personal computer
 A username
 A genuine password
User-Interface Requirements
User interfaces are the registration pages developed for the customers and users
to register and manage the items brought. They consist of the following:
 Login page
 Product page
 View customers
 View records
 Search for customers
 Register a new user
 Print Receipt
Development methodology.
The system development lifecycle is a conceptual model which will be used in
project management that describes the stages in an information system
development project, from an initial feasibility study through maintenance of the
completed application; the SDLC methodology follows the following steps,
 Planning
 Analysis
 Design
 Implementation

System Implementation.
Implementation phase is one of the key activity of this application development.
It involves programming, installation and releasing the application in its target
environment. It also involves training end users on how to log on to the
application
In implementing the system, the system will use HTML, CSS, JAVA Script
and SQL.

SQL Server Features

Microsoft SQL Server supports a set of features that result in the following
benefits:
Ease of installation, deployment, and use: SQL Server includes a set
of administrative and development tools that improve your ability to install,
deploy, manage and use SQL server across several sites.

Scalability: The same database engine can be used across platforms

ranging from laptop computers running Microsoft Windows® 95/98 to large,
multiprocessor servers running Microsoft Windows NT®, Enterprise Edition.

Data warehousing: SQL Server includes tools for extracting and

analyzing summary data for online analytical processing (OLAP). SQL
Server also includes tools for visually designing databases and analyzing
data using English-based questions.
System integration with other server software: SQL Server integrates with e-
mail, the Internet, and Windows.
