Specification of the gear oil approval for AS 7300

FLENDER gear units Page 1 of 10

Proof of suitability for lubricating oils used in FLENDER Revision: 16
gear units with the exception of the train gear units Status: 18.12.2018

Preamble

To acquire an approval for gear oils for use in FLENDER gear units, the oil manufacturer has to warrant that the gear oils are
of CLP quality according to DIN 51517-3 (except tests acc. ISO 6247 and DIN ISO 1817 as well as the READ ACROSS rules
defined there), and that motor oils fulfil the ACEA classification E2, API CF/SF.

It is possible to apply for an approval for a “single viscosity” as well as a "viscosity series" (same brand name, identical
amounts of additives, different nominal viscosity grades) which can consist of "single viscosities" and/or one or more
"homologous series". The possible range for the "viscosity series" is from ISO VG 150 up to ISO VG 680 (respective SAE
classes as well). In special cases and after consultation with FLENDER (e.g. for marine applications) also an approval for an
ISO VG 100 is possible.

For a "homologous series" according to this specification, the base oil can consist of different products. These products have to
be qualitatively identical within the allowed technical tolerances for a "homologous series", while their proportion may vary as
long as the share of a single product does not drop below 3% of the overall content. This has to be proven by the blend table for
example by using defined brand names for the base stocks of mineral oils or the names of the synthetic base products. Base
stocks made by different syntheses, which lead to relevant different properties - e.g. metallocene PAOs compared to
conventional PAOs - have to be classified by their name (cPAO, mPAO, ...) and are treated as separate base stocks.

Some explanatory examples are given in the appendix of this specification.

A READ ACROSS is allowed for a viscosity series according to the table "Proofs of performance / minimum requirements".
The application specific properties listed in that table below must be demonstrated. All test data submitted must be carried out
on oil samples of the same composition according to the formulation table which has to be enclosed. In addition to the testing
and performance requirements, the material safety data sheet (MSDS) and technical data sheets (TDS) including the
temperature-viscosity curves for each viscosity grade shall be submitted for approval. The lubricants shall be identified by
submission of an IR reference spectrum and ICP reference values for the viscosity grades requested for approval. The colour
numbers according to ISO 2049 of the fresh oils have to be indicated.

We recommend conducting the tests directly with the approved test laboratories (see link
https://www.flender.com/en/lubricants, process description, approved laboratories). For the approval of a viscosity range, oil
manufacturers must guarantee that the performance level obtained in a test on a specific oil are consistent for that product
independent of production location or viscosity grade across the viscosity range. In addition, the oil manufacturer has to
warrant that the required properties do not only apply to fresh oil but that they also do not deteriorate within permissible
tolerances through the entire period of use. The period of use for mineral oils shall be 10,000 operating hours, but two years
maximum, and for synthetic oils 20,000 operating hours, but four years maximum, assuming an average operating temperature
of the oil of 80°C.

The formulations tested and approved by Flender must be identical to the oils produced commercially under the approved fluid
name. Any chances to the approved formulations beyond permissible tolerances within production must be notified in writing
to Flender. Unacceptable changes will result in the approval being void and the oil brand removed from the approved lubricant
list. In case of disputes the properties and values determined by recognized neutral laboratories will be binding.

The qualification testing and submission of the approval documentation has to be conducted by the oil manufacturer /
formulation developer. Users of gear boxes cannot request an approval. Lubricants that fulfil the qualification testing of this
specification do not automatically become approved for use. Flender reserves the right to review and approve the lubricant
before listing the oil or oil series in the approved lubricant list. The approval or recommendation of oil brand, or the listing in
the lubricant selection table by Flender is made without any legal obligation and does not mean that Flender assumes any
liability for such lubricants. The approval of a lubricant is, on principle, limited to five years. Detailed information about the
approval time periods is in the document "principle description of operational sequences" to find with the link
https://www.flender.com/en/lubricants.
