1.0 System Description

1.1 General
The purpose of the gas-freeing cover is to prevent the passage of flame into the cargo tank dur-
ing gas-freeing procedures.

1.2 Function
During normal gas-freeing procedures there is free venting through the device. If an ignition oc-
curs on deck outside the tank space, the gas-freeing covers filter element will prevent the pas-
sage of flame into the tank.

2.0 Operating Instructions

2.1 Installation
The gas-freeing cover is delivered fully assembled and an after removal of all packing material
no further work is required to make the unit operative. Normally the gas-freeing cover and the
vacuum unit is delivered as one unit, if not the case, installation is accomplished by bolting the
gas-freeing cover connecting flange to the matching flange on the tank venting gas-freeing pipe
using at suitable gasket and bolts.

2.2 Operation
For opening of the gas-freeing cover removes the eyebolts except for one which has to be loos-
ened. Turn out the cover so the filter elements are free and tighten the remaining eyebolt to
keep the cover in open position and then the gas-freeing procedure can take place.
When the hydrocarbon vapours in the cargo tank has been reduced to less than 2% by volume,
the gas-freeing may take place at the cargo tank deck level (Reference is made to SOLAS 1974
regulation II-2/59.2.1).
After gas-freeing, the cover is closed and the eyebolts tightened.

3.0 Maintenance Instructions

3.1 General
As per SOLAS-requirements the following service intervals shall be followed as a minimum:

 After 6 months of operation, the valve shall be inspected to ensure proper function, and
if necessary be cleaned.
However, depending of the type of cargo and the quality of the inert gas we recommend
that the valve be inspected more often.
 After further 6 months of operation, the valve shall be taken apart for a full overhaul, in-
spection and cleaning.

3.2 Safety regulations for maintenance work

All maintenance work should be carried out with regard to the cargos toxicity and flammability.
When the valve is fitted to the cargo tank while maintenance work takes place, spark free tools
shall be used.
