Chapter 1
Introduction

Background of the Study

Sectioning basis of grades to progress assumes that a larger number of students in any one
class, as ordinarily composed, will exhibit to wide range of students that they can be taught
more advantageously by dividing them into best, medium and poorest section. This kind of
sectioning Improves the ability of those students who are in section 1 because other
teachers gives importance of the students who are in section 1, but there are some
advantages and disadvantages of this.

Heterogenous sectioning it includes students from a wide range of instructional level. The
purpose of this sectioning is to mix those students who has an high IQ level to those students
who has an average IQ level. They mix the students so that it can help the other students
to improve their skills and also to improve their socializing with other students because most
of the students from section 1 they only communicate with their classmates in section 1.

Heterogeneous sectioning is the practice of teaching children of different ability levels

together in the same classroom. Heterogeneous sectioning based on student ability is more
beneficial for student achievement and student satisfaction; high and medium level ability
students benefit more in homogeneous groups but low level ability students benefit more in
heterogeneous groups. Sectioning has been a controversial issue for junior high school
students educating in the same classes the highest achievers and comparatively low
achievers.

For the past school years the San Jose Community High School they are basing the grades
of every student if their grades are high then they are belong to section 1, but for this school
year they change the sectioning for every year level in junior high school they mix the
students in every year level. The teachers of San Jose Community High School decided to
mix the students in every section per year level because of the issue about the unequal
treatment of the other sections. They also want help those student who are not that good
academically so that they can get some knowledge or inspiration to strive and study hard
just like the other students from section 1.

Advantages of mixed section (heterogeneous) specific to low-ability students include having

the opportunity to socialize and learn from students with average or high abilities and a
decreased chance of feeling stigmatized which may help increase their motivation to learn
(Heltemes, 2009). Advantages specific to high-ability students include: experiencing
academic benefits from verbally reinforcing material they understand, avoiding unwanted
social stigmas that may be associated with high-ability students, and developing valuable
leadership skills (Heltemes, 2009).

The Disadvantage of this is that the students may put all the responsibilities to those
students from section 1. It may have some discrimination because when you’re from high
section you should act diffently than the other students from other section. Also the
disvantage of this is that the expectations of the teachers for those students from section 1,
other teachers set their high standards for those students from section 1 because they
always thought that if you were one them you are smart and has an ability to answer all of
their questions.

This research aims to shed light on what the student population thinks about heterogeneous
sectioning after living in a homogenous sectioning before. It also aims to show the
effectiveness of the heterogenous sectioning. The researchers chose this topic to help the
future researchers, parents, students, and the teachers to understand this kind of situation
in school.

Statement of the Problem

The main purpose of this research is to show the overall effect of the heterogenous
sectioning among the junior high school students in San Jose Community High School.

Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions:

1. How does the changes of sectioning affect the academic performance of junior high
school student?

2. Why are the teachers push to implement this kind of sectioning in every year level?

Significance of the Study

This study will be helpful to the following:

To Students, because they will understand the situation they’re facing and also the changes
of sectioning.

To Parents, because they will know why did they mixed the students in every section per
year level.

To Teachers, because they can help their student to answer the questions they want to ask
and also to improve their student’s self confidence to socialize and to be more active in
school.

To Future Researchers: The future researchers will get a lot of idea if they will choose this
topic.
