C. Lesson Proper
Thank you Class for participating.
Class, the activity that we did has
something to do with our lesson for today
which is the short story entitled “The Little
Match Girl.”
Let me ask you this question Class, Who
among you was raised by his or her
grandmother? Anyone?

For what reason? May we know what the

reason is?
Ma’am I was raised by my
grandmother.
Okay, Thank you. Class it is usual that
children today are raised by their
grandparents because of that reason right?
Ma’am because my parents had to go
to their work to provide my needs.
So, our story for today is all about a little
girl and her grandmother.
Are you ready to find out what happened
to them? Yes, Ma’am.

But before anything else, We will

familiarize ourselves with the author of
this fairy tale.
Okay. So the author of this story is Hans
Christian Andersen. He was born in
Denmark in 1805. He died on August 4,
1875 in Copenhagen.
Did you get it Class?
Yes, Ma’am.
Okay now, let’s now proceed to the story.

Alright! Here’s what we are going to do. I

will show and post pictures on the board
and all you to do is to tell me and to your
classmates what is happening there.

Are we clear class?

Yes, Ma’am.
Okay. Let’s start.
(First picture)
Who can tell me what is happening here?
Anyone?
Ma’am I think, it was dark night and it
is cold because of snow.
Very Good! Thank you for that.
In this picture…
It was quite dark and evening, It was
terribly cold because of the snow. Isabella,
is in a street with one slippers on. Why?
Because the other one was laid off by an
urchin and ran off with it. So the slipper
was nowhere to be found.
So the little maiden walked with her naked
feet that were quite red and blue from cold.
She carried a quantity of matches in an old
apron and she hold a bundle of them in her
hand.
Did you understand class?
Yes Ma’am.
Okay let’s proceed to the next picture.
(Second picture)
Anyone? Who has an idea what is
happening here? Ma’am I think It was new year’s eve
and Isabella has nowhere to go.

You are correct! As Isabella finds some

place to go and to ease the coldness that
she felt, she passed by the houses where
she can see by the windows the candles
that are gleaming and the roast goose that
she can smell from outside.
Isabella, find a corner formed by two
houses. There, she sit and her little feet she
had drawn close up to her. She grew colder
and colder, she can’t come home because
she was not able to sold any matches and
give her father money. Her hands were
almost numbed with cold, so Isabella had
to think of way to warm herself. She think
she can take one match out of the bundle.
So she did, she immediately scratch the
match on the wall. It was a wonderful
light. It was a warm, bright flame like a
candle as she held her hands over it. She
though she were sitting before a large iron
stove, with burnished brass feet and a brass
ornament at top. The fire burned with such
blesses influence; it warmed delightfully.
Isabella had already stretched out her feet
to warm them to---but small flame went
out. She had only the remains of the burnt-
out match in her hand.
Did you understand class?
Yes, Ma’am.
Great! Let’s now proceed to the third
picture.
(third picture)
Who can tell me what is happening in the
third picture? Anyone? Ma’am I think Isabella rubbed another
matched there and have an
imagination.

You are correct! Very good! In the third

picture …
Isabella, rubbed another match against the
wall: it burned brightly and where the light
fell on the wall, there the wall became
transparent like veil, so that she could into
the room. On the table was spread a snow-
white tablecloth; upon it was a splendid
porcelain service, and the roast goose was
steaming famously with its stuffing apple
and plums. And when the match went out
and nothing but the thick, cold, damp wall
was left behind.
Did you get it Class?
Yes Ma’am.
Do you have any questions?
None, Ma’am.

Okay. Let’s proceed to the fourth one.

(Fourth picture)
Who has an idea about this picture?
Ma’am I think Isabella, lighted another
match when she is under a Christmas
tree.

Very Good! You are correct!

In the fourth picture …
Isabella lighted another match. Now, she
is sitting under the most magnificent
Christmas tree , it was still larger, and
more decorated than the one which she had
seen through the glass door in the
merchant’s house.
Thousands of lights were burning on the
green branches. The little maiden stretched
out her hands towards them when—the
match went out. The lights of the
Christmas tree rose higher and higher, she
saw them now as stars in heaven; one fell
down and formed a long trail of fire.
Did you catch that class?
Yes, Ma’am.
Any questions?
None, Ma’am.

Alright! Let us proceed to the fifth picture.

(fifth picture)
Isabella, rubbed another match against the
wall, it was again a light. And there she
saw her grandmother, so bright and
radiant, so mild, and with such an
expression of love.
“Grandmother!” cried the little one. “Oh
take me with you! You go away when the
match burns out; you will vanish like the
warm stove like the delicious roast goose
and like the magnificent Christmas tree!”
And she rubbed the whole bundle of
matches quickly against the wall, for she
wanted to be quite sure of keeping her
grandmother near her. And the matches
gave such a brilliant light that it was
brighter than at noon-day; never formerly
had the grandmother been so beautiful and
tall. She took the little maiden on her arm,
and both flew in brightness and in joy so
high, so very high and then above was
neither cold, nor hunger, nor anxiety----
they were with God.
Did you catch that?
Yes Ma’am.

It is too sad. What happened next

Ma’am?
Alright! Now we are down to the last
picture.
(Sixth picture)
But in the corner, at the cold hour of
dawn, sat the poor girl, with rosy cheeks
and with a smiling mouth, leaning against
the wall----frozen to death on the last
evening of the year. Stiff and stark sat the
child there with matches, of which one
bundle had been burnt.
“She wanted to warm herself,” people said.
No one had the slightest suspicion of what
beautiful things she had seen; no one ever
dreamed of the splendor in which, with her
grandmother she had entered on the joys of
the new year.

Okay! Did you enjoy our story for today?

Yes, Ma’am. But we feel sorry for
Isabella.

Isabella’s story was sad right?

Yes, Ma’am.
So based on the story, what do you think is
the theme?
Who has an idea? Anyone?
Ma’am I think it’s all about loneliness
and sadness.
Very Good! It’s all about loneliness and
sadness because Isabella had nowhere to
go and she misses her grandmother who
passed away.
Another?
Ma’am I think It’s all about life, where
we experience challenges and
problems.

Very Good! Thank you for that! Another

theme of this story is about Life. We face
challenges and problems just like Isabella.
But we need to be strong enough to face
those.
Are we clear?
Yes, Ma’am.

Another one is the Acceptance. Just like

Isabella, we need to accept the things that
are happening to our life. We just have to
let go and move on.

Okay. If that’s the case, let us have an

activity.
