FINAL Lesson Plan Template 2018-2019

One class period of time

Grade Level 12

Subject Area Government (90 minute class period)

Introduction: As students walk into class they all need to pick up a 3x5 index card,
and a copy of the New York Times article, “Why RBG Matters”, they will
both be needed later on in the class period, the two piles of the needed
materials are always placed on the teachers desk. Once students are
seated there should be a three branches of government image being
projected for the students to see and discuss amongst each other what
they think of the image and predict what they will learn about from viewing
this picture.This should all take no more than 8 minutes. [NEPF 1, Initial

Daily Reviews: ​Have students sign on with tablets to​ google classroom​ and take their
daily quiz with questions on material from the last lesson. If needed, the
join code is written on the board. Quiz is 8 questions long and should take
students no more than 12 minutes. Students can use their own notes if
needed to help complete quiz. There should be no talking during this quiz,
sharing of notes is unacceptable, this is independent work. [NEPF 5,

Daily Objective: The daily objective is always written on the board. Todays’: “Students will
learn the purposes and differences of the three branches of government
and be able to depict the responsibilities of each”. As the objective is read
and explained to the students, they should be copying down the objective
as an introductory in their notebook for this lessons’ notes. Daily objective
should take no more than 5 minutes. [NEPF 1, Purpose: Indicator 3]

Concept and Skill ​ Present three branches of government ​google slides​ for students.
Development and Explain/point out vocab definitions and main points of each slide. Allow
Application: students to ask questions and discuss amongst each other what these
terms mean and who these politicians are that contribute to the three
branches while presenting the notes. Make sure students are prepared
and have their notebooks out for notes. The presentation and discussion
in between should take no more than 25 minutes. [NEPF 3, Discourse:

Guided Practice There is a second presentation (slides) that only includes definitions,
(Teacher led): different scenarios, and pictures of the three branches of government,
there are 12 slides. Students do not need to raise hands and can simply
state which branch they believe the slide represents. The instructor will be
able to tell if there is any branch of government the class still does not
comprehend. There is an answer key to the presentation next to the
keyboard on the teachers desk. It is yellow and inside of a sheet protector.

than seven minutes.

Group Practice (Whole ​ As a class, students are to connect to ​kahoot ​for a quick review on the
class or small groups): days’ lesson. There are 20 questions, students can use their phone or the
tablet to participate, whichever they prefer. The top two performers get a
pass on the day’s exit ticket. The group activity should take no more than
15 minutes. [NEPF 5, Assessment: Indicator 1]

Independent Practice If time permits, students are to independently read the article on Ruth
(Alone): Bader Ginsburg that they picked up at the beginning of class. If not read
during class, students are to take the article home and read it as part of
their homework. The article includes terminology from past lessons and
the lesson from today. If students are confused or do not recognize certain
terms or people mentioned in the article, they should refer back to their

Homework ​As homework, students will create a word document and answer the
Assignments: following questions of one government branch of their choice. 1.) Name a
politician within this branch and state whether they identify as part of the
left or right wing. 2.) What is the purpose of this branch? Do they propose
laws, pass them, enforce them or all of the above? 3.) Lastly, the student
must include their own interpretation of the importance behind this branch.
Each question should have a response of minimum 5 sentences. Students
can answer questions for more than one branch for bonus points on their
homework grade. The assignment is to be turned in as a link via email.
The email the homework assignment should be sent to is on the school

Closure: Once homework is assigned students are to write down the days’ exit
ticket on the note cards they picked up at the beginning of class.The exit
ticket should include their name, the date, something they learned and
something they are still confused about or could use further explanation
on. Exit tickets are handed to the teacher on their way out and should take
