Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

For this lesson idea, I have decided to use iMovie to teach my students about different weather patterns.
iMovie allows its user to make their own videos and short movies using picture, videos, audio, and much
more. The tool is very user friendly and is basic enough to where you could learn to use all the tools it
provides for you on your own if needed. I chose to incorporate iMovie into my lesson idea because it give a
visual and auditory representation for what my students are going to be learning about. It is a great way for
me to introduce weather patterns to my students in a way that will keep them engaged.

iMovie can be a great tool to use with our visual and auditory learners, or students who may have a disability
in that area. This tool is very user friendly with supporting these particular students. In a student is visually
impaired, a voice over can be added to the entire movie describing to the listener what is appearing to them
on the screen. Subtitles can be added to every video or picture for those who are hearing impaired. These
subtitles can also be used for our English Language Learners, as subtitles can be added for the language they
are most comfortable using. With iMovie, you are also able to pause the video and rewind back to certain
parts, which can help our English Language Learners and those students who may need extra support in this
way.
Lesson idea implementation:
My Standard has students identifying weather patterns. They will do this by obtaining, evaluate, and
communicate different information about weather. To introduce my students to the topic of weather
patterns, I will ask my students the open ended questions as to what they think the weather is. After the
students give some insight as to what they think weather might be, this will lead into the iMovie I have
created for an introduction into weather patterns. Before the video is played, students will be asked to
remember one important thing or term from the video to incorporate into their own projects. This
introduction should take about 15 to 20 minutes with the video included.

After the movie is done playing, the students and I will all come back together as a whole class and discuss
what terms and ideas we heard and saw in the video. Whenever a student mentions a new term they learned
from the video, I will have them come up to the interactive white board and either write or draw the term.
We will then discuss the particular terms we have discovered as a group and add supporting details to those
terms to help everyone’s learning and understanding. By doing this as a whole class, all the students are able
to work together and see how they can obtain information from visual and auditory information they are
looking at. I can assess the whole class during this part to make sure the majority of students have a good
start with this concept. This section should take about 15 minutes as well.

After we have done this as a whole class, the students will be split into smaller groups and will be given a
specific weather pattern to do research on. With this research, the students will make their own iMovie with
information they find based on their weather pattern they are going to research. The students will work
together to find pictures, a video, and any additional information needed in order to inform the other groups
about their specific weather pattern. The movies will be shared with the rest of the students in the class to
show everyone what they had learned about their weather pattern. Their learning will be assessed through
the iMovie they created and how their information is presented to the class. Feedback can be given from
myself and the students during this time so that there can be an open discussion about all the weather
patterns the students did research on. I can split up the groups in a specific way so that the students are
paired with students they might not regularly work with. This way students can be with different learners.
Importance of technology:
It is important to use technology in the classroom to give students a variety of different methods of learning.
My lesson could have been taught without the use of iMovie or the interactive white board, but using these
tools enhanced how interactive my students could be with the knowledge they were being presented. The
lose of visual and audio aspects could still be integrated without the technology, but cannot be as in depth
without the use of the technology already implemented into my lesson idea. The use of iMovie and the
interactive white board in my lesson help my students to learn about weather patterns in a new way that can
be more interact for my classroom.
Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
A problem I could run into could be an issue with copyrights. If I allow the students to use different videos and
pictures in their iMovie from approved websites, the creator of that content still might not give permission for
others to use. To avoid this problem, I could have the student create their own content so it many be shared
with others and on a classroom blog. Another problem we might run into involving the student’s privacy is if
we do not have permission for their classwork to be shared outside of the classroom. If this is the case with a
particular student, the videos would not be shared outside of the classroom to respect the privacy their
parent or guardian has set in place.
Reflective Practice:
After this lesson, the students and I will come back as a whole class to discuss what they liked and did not like
about using iMovie. I will also have the students complete a written self-reflection as to what the learned and
their feedback in case they do not feel comfortable with sharing in front of the whole class. Through this, I
could learn if the students liked the video on iMovie and if they enjoyed making their own movies. I will also
have the students write down another term or idea they learned from another groups iMovie to see if their
learning improved from watching their classmates projects. If I wanted to increase the LoTi level with this
lesson, I could share the videos the students created with other classes in the school or put it on a classroom
blog for their parents and guardians to see. Students can also have more of a choice as to what weather
topics they look up and what websites they could use for research.

To further the entire lesson, we could study real life weather patterns we see every day. Students could write
down the different types of weather patterns they see over a specific weekend and during the following class,
all of the students could put their findings together (assuming that all the students live around the same area

and see the same weather patterns). We can then take that combined information and create an iMovie
together as a whole class describing the different weather patterns we observed. My class as a whole can
predict why these weather patterns happened and share their findings with everyone. This video can be
shared with other classes in the school or even put on the classroom blog in order for parents and guardians
to see what their child has been learning about.
