CHAPTER I

PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Background of the Study

Students’ time is a limited resource. Like other limited resources, time can be more or less

effectively managed. We propose that differences among individuals in time management

practices account for some of the differences in how much students achieve during their

school years. The self-perception of having good time management skills is considered to

have a direct correlation to performance levels. Students who perceive themselves as

having good time management skills are usually the students who are more involved and

have a high desire to achieve, resulting in a higher level of performance. To improve

academic performance among school students, self-attitudes and participation in activities

that keep schedules busy will help enforce the principal influence

In the modern world, time is seen as an indefinitely divisible and usable commodity. It

helps to infuse the concept of time through the institution. All the material and human resources

processed by organizations can be enhanced in the coursed of time or be transformed as time

goes on; yet the only asset that cannot be changed or purchased or stored is time itself. The secret
to achieving success in life is effectively managing this resource that everyone possesses equally

and paying sufficient emphasis to planning (Macan, Shahani, Dipboye, and Philips, 2000).

Though effective and efficient use of time varies with respect to the tasks performed, the further

increase in the level of knowledge and skills expected from modern employees has increased the

necessity of time planning. The road to success in social life passes effective and efficient

working which is only possible via time management. The competitive environment we live in

today encourages people from as early as their elementary education to plan and manage their

time effectively. The high performance required by competitive conditions forces organizations

and directors to use time effectively and stipulates the research to control time (Alay and

Kocak,2003).

Time management plays a vital role in improving students’ academic performance and

achievements. Each and every student should have time management ability which includes

setting goals and priorities, using time management mechanism and being organized in using

time. Here time management is only possible though self-motivation, performance, ability, and

motivation (Brigette, Classeus, Earde, and Rute, 2005). These

are the few activities performed by today’s students, which act as a barrier between them and

their academic performance. Due to mismanagement or time they gap behind. This study will

help to analyze the positive or negative impact of time management on academic performance of

students. It will also help to make some decision changes (Nortle, Robins and Richard, 2002).

There is no right way to manage our time; however, it is more important to get to know
ourselves, so we can make good decisions about how to use our time. Likewise, in the process of

providing educational services this issue has been a subject of interest discussed and emphasized

in several platforms and an attempt has been initiated to assess and analyze time and the time

management attitudes and behaviors of students in educational institutes.

Time is the most valuable commodity. Once consumed it can never be replaced again. On

the other hand, it is renewed each day. As discussed and explained by many researchers in the

field of education, time management is a great factor to ones’ life.

Statement of the Problem

This study is focused on how time management affects the academic performance of

Grade 11 HUMSS students only in Sorsogon National High School, to offer more knowledge

that is related to the topic. In this study the following questions will be answered:

What is time management as percieved by the Senior High School students?

What are the effects of time management in the academic performance of Senior High School

students?

How does time management affect their academic performance?

Scope and Delimitation

The main focus of this study is to identify the perceptions of students concerning their

time management to the academic performance of Senior High School students particularly
Grade 11 in the HUMSS strand of Sorsogon National High School and also enlighten the

researchers about the time management and it’s effects. An interview will be used in gathering

data. The researchers will also use the in finalizing the data.

However, the researchers will only be focusing on Grade 11 HUMSS students and not on

other year levels and strands in Sorsogon National High School. Interviews will be needed since

information will be used in making the the gathered data.

The researchers wanted to know how are these effects affect the students’ lives and it’s

relation to the students’ academic performances inside the school.

Significance of the Study

Students have so many things to do in school and outside the school. The following will

benefit in conducting the study:

Students. Help students to accomplish tasks in a short period of time which they can gain more

free time for other things and make it more efficient for them as a routine for the school year.

Teachers. The study will also benefit the teachers because they will be aware of what the

students are doing in school and outside the school.

Parents. They will know what their child is stressing about. And also, the parents will be aware

of the things that affects their child’s time management.

The researchers. The researchers themselves will also benefit because they will know how other

students’ lives are in terms of their school works, leisure time, etc.
