In A Perfect World

If I taught in a perfect world and could have an unending supply of money, I would be

able to orchestrate the perfect classroom. If I could have an unending amount of money to build a

classroom, I would first invest in enough laptops for each student in my class. This would be a

very beneficial investment because then it allows students to use and find resources that will help

them to succeed in my class. If they each had a laptop, it would allow them to have access to

educational games that they can use to help improve their understanding of things in class. If I

had a one to one classroom, it would be easy for me to access and monitor my student’s process

as well. Having laptops or tablets in my classroom for each student would be the first thing that I

put into my perfect classroom because I believe that they would make assessing and monitoring

a lot easier and students would be able to work at their own pace on them.

Because I would have a never-ending supply of money, I would then look at my roster

and look to see what students need accommodations, then I would look to see if they were

accommodations that I could provide myself while also trying to teach all 29 of my other

students. Then if it was an accommodation that I was not possible for me to provide because of

the other students, I would hire an aid for each student that needs accommodations. This way I

would know that each student was getting the kind of attention and assistance that they need in

my classroom. It is nearly impossible to try and accommodate all students in a regular classroom

on your own because each student learns differently. But if I could hire an aid for each student to

help me monitor where they are at and to help me accommodate each students’ needs, that would
benefit their overall success. This would help me to reach all diverse learners because if one

student is not performing well because English is not their first language, then I will hire an aid

that speaks their language to help translate what the student does not understand, but they can

also teach them strategies to help get them caught up with their vocabulary.

If I worked as a teacher in a perfect world, we would not be labeling kids with a learning

disability just because they are behind in school just because of their language barrier. If a

student is not performing to standard, I would look at who the student is, if they had any

language barrier I would get them a translator. I would not just label them because they are not

performing like how they should. I would make sure that the aid that that student has knows that

student’s first language so that they can succeed.

This classroom will be a classroom that is accessible to ALL students. I will provide an

area in my classroom that will be a sensory area. I will provide sensory chairs, fidget spinners,

kinetic sand, and so many other sensory activities and items to help students who have sensory

issues. Providing these things will help students to calm down, it can help them to focus, there

are so many benefits to having a sensory area in my classroom. Having sensory areas also tells a

student that you care about what they need and want to help them succeed no matter what. Not

only will there be a sensory area, but there will also be a quiet area in my classroom as well. I

will provide this for students to have access too at all times during the classroom. This will be a

small area that students are able to go back to so they can sit in peace and quiet to focus on their

work. If they need a quiet place to sit and calm down also they are welcome to go to a quiet

place. I would set a time limit for both the quiet space and sensory area so that students do not

take advantage of those areas and use them as a tool to get out of doing their work. I believe that
these two items in my classroom would help assist students who are sensitive to sensory items

and it will also help students who are struggling mentally. I believe that if you take into

consideration a student’s mental health while you are teaching you will help them succeed in the

long run.

Along with all of that, I would also try and create a non-discriminatory classroom. To do

this, I will try and pick materials that all of my students can relate to. I will not just pick books

that are only about the majority. I would find books for my classroom that are about minority

groups that are represented in my class to help them feel more welcomed in my class. If they did

not have that, they would feel less welcomed and accepted in class. I would not just celebrate

Christmas in my class, I would ask all of my students what kind of holidays or traditions they

celebrate at home, and I would celebrate each tradition that my students celebrate each year. That

way students are learning about different life-styles that their peers live and they are learning

acceptance of diversity. These two methods are also cheap so it is something that I could do in a

regular classroom someday when I am teaching as well.

In a perfect world, I would not have to follow specific teaching standards that are often

too much to accomplish in a year. If I taught in a perfect world, I would have a lot more freedom

to do my own thing. In my perfect world, I would set up reading groups based on reading levels,

and I would do rotations. So each group would have 30 minutes working with me on guided

reading. This guided reading time would be my students working at their own pace, meeting the

standards but I would not be rushing the students. I feel like that is a big problem with education

now. I feel like teachers have so much to cover in such a small amount of time they end up

rushing their students’ learning which will prevent them from completely retaining the
information. If I could have a classroom that was not working on a deadline, I would be able to

work with students on retention and help them successfully learn and retain information at their

own pace instead of shoving the information down their throats.

Overall, if I could build the perfect classroom, I would provide all of my students with an

aid that would help assist them when I cannot physically be by every students’ side the whole

time they are working. I would create an environment for all students to feel safe and accepted in

my classroom by providing materials that include positive models of each minority group in my

classroom. I would also find a way to incorporate any traditions that students celebrate at home

so that we are not only teaching and promoting Christmas. I would also provide a sensory area, a

quiet space, and build a one to one classroom. Overall, my goal is to create a classroom that

encourages a healthy amount of learning. I do not want to create an environment with an

impossible goal for learning that would result in shoving information down students’ throats and

rushing their learning. This would just create a stressful environment that would not promote

healthy learning.
