Footnotes
1. The time until passport is defined as the required residency time, plus the time required for the naturalization to process. Some countries require you to continue residing during the naturalization period while other allow you to leave.
2. Residency required is the amount of time you have to spend in the country every year to qualify for naturalization.
3. During the first year you’ll have to spend a minimum of four months in the country. After the first year, your residence permit renews in two-year intervals. During each two year period you have to spend at least 16 months in the country. And you
can’t leave for more than 6 consecutive months during the entire time.
4. In Spain the residency period is 10 years, but it goes down to 2 years if you are citizen of a former Spanish colony.
5. In Belgium the minimum time spent in the country is not defined per se, but a “reasonable enough time to prove strong ties to Belgium.”
6. Portugal’s laws allow naturalization under the Golden Visa program’s residency requirements of 7 days per year. But the program is too new to tell if it works in practice. We will know for sure in 2020.
7. Antigua, St. Lucia and Malta do not require that you spend any amount of time living in the country, but you will need to visit the country in-person to pick up your passport.
8. Although the official requirement to maintain permanent residency is to spend just 1 day every two years in the country, you should consider spending more time there to demonstrate strong ties to Panama during the naturalization process.
9. In Chile you have to spend 6 months during the first year and then just 1 day per year afterwards to maintain residency. But you should spend significantly more time there to demonstrate strong ties to Chile during the naturalization process.
