CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

INTRODUCION

Chips are always been the favorite snack of all.People often eat chips whenever

they want without concerning the kind of nutrition they are getting from it.As long as they enjoy

and satisfy their hunger hormones eating chips are good. Some already make it as their habit.

According to El-Zibeth(2017),salt is one of the highest content of

chips, nowadays. He used Lay’s brand Salt and Vinegar chips as an example which has 380

milligrams of sodium content per ounce, while the classic variety has 180 milligrams. If you will

add the sodium content of the processed and canned foods, which every person eat,to chips’

sodium content ,it will exceed to 2,400 milligrams of sodium which is recommended aximum

amount of salt intake per day.As a result, people get sick of heart

attacks,strokes,oedemia,dementia and kidney diseases (Cappucio,2013).

Producing healthy chips would be very beneficial to everyone’s health sinc it is our

habit to eat chips.People can still enjoy eating it while getting healthier and stronger. For this

study, pumpkin (Cocurbita) and malunggay (Moringa oliefera) leaves would be a great

combination to produce healthy chips since they both contain vitamins and minerals which our

body need. These two vegetables are both high in beta-carotene which is a precursor of vitamin

A.It is for healthy skin and mucus membranes, immun system, and good eye health and vision

(Nordguust,2013).According to Gill (2018),pumpkin and malunggay leaves are also rich in

potassium, manganese, iron, phosphorus, etc.,which are great for strengthening and protectinne of

one’s body from illneses.Aside from this,Marilyn (2011) had included pumpkin and malunggay
as one of the abundant vegetables here in the Philippines so these are easy o find in tropical

climate.

Having said that the chips we are eating now have a high percentage of sodium

percentage of sodium content, this study can be a solution to this problem since the researchers

will use vegeables as their ingredient to this alternative chips.

Background of the Study

Pumpkin (Cocurbita) is known for its healthy benefits such as vitamin C,beta-

carotene, vitamin E,iron, phosphorus, etc.especially in its ability to be an anti-oxidant.Malunggay

(Moringa oliefera) is considered as “Miracle Vegetable” because of its health benefits, such as

more iron,more potassium,beta-carotene,manganese,phosphorus,etc.

This study aims to produc healthy chips out of pumpkin and malunggay leaves that

will serve as an alternative healthy snack for all.Pumpkin and malunggay leaves are said to be

very nutritious that can sustain people potassium, copper, vitamin C,beta-

carotene, phosphorus, iron, etc. which are needed to support aand strengthen our body.Since chips

have always been the favorite snack of all, especially kids, this can be beneficial for hman health

to reduce the risk of diseases caused by salt.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to produce an alternative chips made of pumpkin (Cocurbita) and

malunggay (Moringa oliefera) leaves.

Specifically,this study aims to:

1. make a healthy chips usning pumpkin and malunggay leaves, and

2. provide a cost-effective alternative chips to lose weight.

Hypotheses:

Null Hypothesis (Ho):

The pumpkin (Cocurbita) and malunggay (Moringa oliefera) leaves are not a good

alternative chips.

Alternative Hypothesis (Ha):

The pumpkin (Cocurbita) and malunggay (Moringa oliefera) leaves can be a good

alternative chips.

Significance of the Study

This study will produce healthy chips out of pumpkin and malunggya leaves. It would

give people more nutrition and protection against illneses as these vegetables contain essential

nutrients that our body need. Also, this study will provide easy procedures for parents at home

who want to make healthy snack for their family.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

For the researchers of this chips they will use a survey form that will be provided in their

study. The survey includes the chips parameters:thickness, size, color and the overall judgement
for the chips (1-10).However,the content analysis for the chips is beyond the reach of the

researchers.
