Unit 5 – Colloids

Time Frame 3 weeks

Competencies
C1. Demonstrate understanding of the properties, preparations and uses of colloids.
C2. Appreciate the uses/applications of colloids in daily life.

IMPORTANCE OF COLLOIDS TO DAILY LIFE

Time Frame 2 sessions

I. Learning Objectives
At the end of the session, the students must be able to:
1. Prepare useful colloids;
2. Prepare colloids by condensation and dispersion methods; and
3. Explain how lyophobic colloids are stabilized.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Preparation of colloids

B. References
1.Department of Education, Culture and Sports. (1991). Science and
Technology III. Quezon City: Book Media Press, pp. 154-166.
2.Brown, Theodore l., LeMay, H. Eugene Jr., and Bursten, Bruse E., Chemistry

3.Mendoza. Chemistry, pp.252-254.
4.Chemistry, Addison-Wesley, pp. 449.

B. Materials
Different containers of: toothpaste, lotions, creams, milk, etc.

III. Learning Tasks

A. Recall and Motivation
1. What are the properties of colloids?
2. What colloids have you made?
3. What method of preparing colloids did you apply?
4. Are the colloids you made important?
5. What colloids are used in industry and in our daily lives?

B. Lesson Proper

1. Activity: Group discussion (divide the class into groups)

a. Read the label of the different containers that you brought.
b. What are compounds are found in them?
c. Which are oil-based and which are water-based? (research on them)
d. Are they separated in two layers? If not, what do you think gives it
smooth consistency?

YOU MAY END SESSION 1 AT THIS POINT.

2. Discussion / Concept Formation

a. Milk- water, fats, vitamins, minerals, casein (protein) – the water-
based and the fat-based materials are thoroughly mixed; these two
layers can separate when induced mechanically (churning to form
butter) and by chemical reagents (addition of acid for curdling). \

b. Toothpaste- moisture, detergent, flavors (menthol, etc.) abrasive-

detergent serves as emulsifier so that the two layers do not separate.

c. Lotions- moisture (to prevent skin dryness), oils (to lock in moisture),
vitamins, other materials like collagen (protein) or weak acids;
emulsifier is added so that layers do not separate.

C. Generalization
1. There are many uses of colloids in our daily lives.
2. Both the oils/ fats and water-based materials have roles to play and the
colloids are a good way of combining these properties.
3. Emulsifiers play an important role in the stability of the colloid.

D. Application/ Valuing
1. It is essential to reads labels of consumer products to have better
understanding of the materials that we eat or that come in contact with our
bodies.
2. It is important for industry to put proper labelling on their products.

E. Agreement
Bring materials for the next class.
