Instructional Procedures

Focusing Event: To introduce number lines, I will have the students watch a video in English
that shows how to count by 2s, 5s, and 10s. The video involves the students by having them
stand up and doing different exercises to get their body pumping before doing some learning
about number lines. Once the video is over, review what a number line is.

Teaching/ Learning Procedures:

Begin by asking the students what is a number line? What goes on a number line? How
does a number line start? Can I start a number line with any number, or does it have to start with
0? Once the students answer, have two students help pass out two sets of numbers. Have the
students with the white paper flip over the number, give the students 20 seconds to review their
number. Ask them to talk with their group and try to figure out by what number are they being
arranged. Is it by 2s,5s or 10s? Have them discuss for 30 seconds. Then have them quietly walk
around the classroom to see which the starting number is. Once the students figure it out, have
them create a human number line. Repeat with Orange paper.
Then explain the directions of the Grab n Go activity.
The students will be divided by their table groups and be sat in different places around the room.
Each group will have 3 bags, each with numbers, and have a grab n go strip. On the grab n go
strip, only one student from each group will be in charge or the team captain of writing and
helping their group form the number line by the number that they choose from the grab n go
bags. The students will each get 3 worksheets for each bag. On the worksheet, each student will
write the number line that their group came up with on their strip. The directions are repeated for
each worksheet. Remind students to count with their fingers.

Formative Check (ongoing or specific): Teacher will walk around and check the
number lines the groups are forming and make sure they are doing it correctly.

Reteach (alternative used as needed): Give students smaller numbers to start off with .

Closure: Have one person from each group explain the way they came up with their number line
and draw it on a large piece of paper.

Assessment/Summative Evaluation: None.

Modifications/Notes: Struggling/Special Education Learner: Students who are having a great
amount of trouble may be partnered with another classmate or given more time to work on the
assignment. If students don’t finish within the given time, they will be able to complete it another
day, and be put in their red folder.
Gifted and Talented: Students who have mastered the lesson will be asked to help their peers or
be able to fill out their library folder and be able to read.
ELL: Will have the material explained to them in greater detail using specific questions using the
math book and pictures.
